Gemmell de- parted Tuesday for Palo Alto, CaL where Mr. Gemmell goes for a diag nosis at the U. S. Veterans' bureau diagnostic center located there. Mr. Gemmell has been confined to his home for more than two months with an affliction to his back, be lieved to have been caused by a ser vice injury, which has so far baffled leading physicians in finding a cure. His many friends are hoping that the trip south may be fruitful of better results. Mr. and Mrs. Spen cer Crawford and Mrs. Leslie Em ery accompanied the Gemmells to Arlington where they took the train. - Vawter and John Parker depart ed for Eugene yesterday evening. being accompanied as far as Port- land by Merle Becket and Glen Casteel. The Parker boys will again enter the University of Oregon with the beginning of the school year, though John will return to Heppner before time of reglstra tion. A committee appointed by Mrs. Lucy E. Rodgers, president, is meet ing this afternoon to discuss plans for a .library benefit to be given October 8 at the school auditorium The committee is Paul Menegat, chairman, Mrs. Phil Mahoney, Paul Marble, J. D. Cash and Mrs. Harold Case. " Rev. B. Stanley Moore and Mrs. Moore departed Tuesday morning for Ontario to prepare for their future work there. Mr. Moore was recently transferred to Ontario from Heppner, and will' be mission ary in charge of the Episcopal church there. Edmund Hicks, Grant county district attorney, was In Heppner the first of the week in search of information that might be of use In trying the McLaughlin - Blessing murder case, in which he will have charge of the prosecution. Heppner people who attended the Gilliam county fair at Condon Sat urday included D. A. Wilson, W. R. Poulson, E. O. and R. B. Ferguson, B. G. Sigsbee, Miss Bernice Sigs bee, Miss Mae Groshens, Mr. and Mrs. L. Van Marter and Mr. and Mrs. Claude Cox. Pat Foley of The Dalles, owner of Hotel Heppner, was In the city Monday attending to matters in connection with adjustment of in surance covering damage done the property by water in the fire of last week. Stanley Jewett, state leader of predatroy animal control with the U. S. Biological survey, and Harold Dobyns, assistant, were in the city Saturday while making the rounds in connection with their work. Oren G. Grablll, farmer of the lone distriot, was attending to mat ters of business in the city Tues day in connection with his work as executor of the estate of the late David Henry Grabill.- Miss Gladys Benge, who spent the summer with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eph Eskelson, has returned to Medford where she is teaching for her second year in Medford high school. James Luper and daughter, Mrs. Albert King of Portland arrived in the city Saturday to attend to busi ness in connection with their prop erty damaged In the fire of last week. Homer Hayes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Hayes, departed Monday morning for Albany where he will enter Albany college with the be ginning of the school year. Ackley, erstwhile re porter on the Heppner Gazette Times and now with the Union at Walla Walla, Wash., came over from that city yesterday and en joyed a visit with friends here. Mr. Ackley reported being well pleased wim nis present situation. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schwarz and Mrg,, John Anglin motored to Wap- ato ana Yakima, Wash., last week end, taking in the Washington state fair at the latter place, and Mr. and Mrs. Schwarz visiting with the E. R. Merritt family at Wapato. They returned nome yesterday. Josephine Mahoney left for Port land Sunday for a short respite from her duties as local reporter lor the .Pendleton East Oregonian. Russell E. Pratt, local Shell Oil company manager, and Mrs. Pratt departed Saturday for Salem where they will spend their vacation. W. E. The members of the 4-H health club of Strawberry, Fay and May Rau,ch, Doris and Kenneth Klinger, and Edna and Henry Rauch, ac companied by Miss Nora McDaid, leader, were at Dr. Gray's office in Heppner Thursday. Irl Clary and Bert Michell were at Hermiston on Wednesday. Mrs. Frank Kilkenny went to Heppner Thursday morning, re turning later that day with Miss Rosella Doherty. F. W. Hawley was at Echo on Thursday. Mrs. John Moore with Miss Au drey Moore and her son, Johnnie Moore, were at Stanfleld Saturday afternoon. Joe Kilkenny returned to Hepp ner Thursday after his visit home. The team consists of Margaret McDaid and Doris Klinger. They will be accompanied to Salem by Miss No ra McDaid who Is the leader of the club. Last Saturday evening the team put on its demonstration at Board man at the North Morrow County fair. Miss Nora McDaid and Mrs. Marie Clary went with thme to Boardman. Ed Ditty visited at the home of Bert Michell Monday evening. Miss Rosella Doherty was sur prised by her pupils and the high school students of Alpine Friday afternoon when they suddenly ap peared in her room, each carrying a birthday present, cakes, plates and so forth. Among those pre sent were Mrs. Dan Lindsay, Mrs. Frank Kilkenny, Irl Clary and the high school teacher, Mfs. Iri Clary. , The Strawberry 4-H health club members are celebrating because they send the two best members of their club to Salem on October 26, and also because they received the five ribbons representing the five best grades In their work. Ken neth Klinger won first, Doris Kling er, second; Henry Rauch, third; May Rauch, fourth, and Fay Rauch, fifth". Miss Nora McDaid Is the leader of this club also. J. P. Doherty went to Portland SUnday morning to visit with friends and relatives. Mrs. J. P. Doherty, who has been visiting there will come home with him. A shower was given for Mr. and Mrs. W. J. McDaid (Mildred How ard) by Mrs. Marie Clary and Mrs. Bert Michell last Saturday eve ning. A large number was present and many lovely presents were giv en. Later in- the evening there were moonlight quadrilles and waltzes as the floor had been erec ted for the occasion out-of-doors. It was a tired and sleepy group that broke up that evening. HARDMAN. MRS. ELLA FARRENS. School staretd Monday, Sept 7, with an increased enrollment in the high school and primary room. There were four freshmen this year. Arleta and Lester Ashbaugh, Arlton Stevens and Dollie Farrens. There are five other students in the school besides four ex-seniors tak ing post-graduate work. They are Zetta Bleakman, Mary Ellen In- skeep, Mildred and Lucile Farens. There are no new students in Mrs. Knighten's room. Miss Montgom ery boasts of four beginners in her room: Jean Leathers, Maxine Mc- Daniel, Alene Inskeep and Thelma Coats. Mr. and Mrs. John Adams were pleased to have as their guests Mrs. Etta Rowe and Mrs. Adam's brothers, Wes Ward of Tacoma and Frank Ward of Leeburg. Mrs. Rowe and Wes Ward returned to their homes the end of the week but Frank Ward remained for an extended visit George Kirk returned from the Murphy ranch on Rock creek where he has been working for several months. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Howell and daughter Norma and Mr. and Mrs. Esley Walker were visiting Jasper Walker Sunday last Lois Adams has been on the sick list this week.
