Federal Export Says News Stories
Most Important; Oregon Man
Heads College Scribes.
News stories, particularly in lo
cal papers, are considered the most
important single factor in putting
over a campaign for agricultural
betterment, according to Reuben
Brigham, editor of the extension
service of the United States depart
ment of agriculture, who was one
of the principal speakers at the re
cent national convention of the
American Association of Agricul
tural College editors held at Ore
gon State college.
In reviewing more than 10 meth
ods used in state and federal co
operation in such campaigns as
those for control of the corn borer
in the middle west and wheat acre
age adjustment, Mr. Brigham said
that they depend more on news
stories than on any other single
factor.
Agricultural editors from many
parts of the United States attended
the session and exchanged ideas on
the best methods of preparing ex
periment station and extension
service findings for the press of the
country. These men are also in
charge of editing bulletins put out
by the colleges.
"You men who prepare agricul
tural information in popular form
for the public are in no wise pub-
lcity agents in the malodorous
sense of that term," declared M. S.
Eisenhower, head of the informa
tion service of the U. S. depart
ment of agriculture. "No other in
stitutions anywhere play so vital
and effective a role in adult educa
tion as the state agricultural col
leges and the U. S. department of
agriculture. From the beginning,
Congress paced informational work
on a par with research and directed
that information should not only be
acquired but carried to the general
pubic."
C. D. Byrne, director of the Ore
gon State college news service, was
elected president of the national as
sociation for the coming year, R.
M. Soule of the state college of
Georgia, vice-president, and M. C.
Schnopp, of West Virginia univer
sity, secrteary-treasurer.
