April Narrative Report
County Health Nurse
By EDITH J. STALLARD. R. N.
A very peculiar growth on the
lid portion of the eye of a 5-year-old
child caused the doctor to think of
cancer. We took the boy to the
Doernbecher hospital where the
growth was removed and sent away
for further examination. The child
is home now, well and happy.
Another case of malformation of
a baby seven days old was taken
to Portland for treatment. We
hoped the Shrine hospital would
start treatment at once but the ad
justment necessary to give perma
nent benefit would be so radical the
child should be stronger to undergo
such treatment The child was left
in the "Waverly Baby Home until
such time the Shrine hospital calls.
The last word we have had is that
the baby is gaining two ounces a
day.
The 13th of April Mrs. Sadie Orr
Dunbar gave Morrow county a real
treat At that time the Morrow
County Public Health association
was reorganized to a certain extent.
On the resignation of our president,
Mr. McDuffee, and secretary, Mrs.
Blakely, W. W. Head of Ione was
elected president and Mrs. Edwin
Ingles of Lexington was elected sec
retary. Cash prizes were given
from the association funds for the
essay contest being put on through
the high schools. The subject was
"The Foe of Youth," (tuberculosis)
Other bills were paid such as for
milk that made it possible for
child to finish her school year safe
ly and the printing of stationery,
The loan closet has grown by way
of more donations. Contributions
have been received from individuals
and the Cheer club. We are glad
to say that all the supplies are in
use at this time. If any person
needs any hospital equipment we
may have it and will be glad to
loan it.
Dr. A. B. Gray, our county health
physician, has examined all the
school children of Irrigon, Lexing
ton and Ione. This examination is
well worth while and if the splendid
advice given is followed out during
the summer we will start next
year's school in a much more satis
factory way, a safer way from the
children's standpoint
As a result of these examinations
we have discovered four cases, if
treated properly may check the pos
sible development of tuberculosis.
Wouldn't this mean something to
a community as well as to four in
dividual families?
Again this month we And the
splendid cooperation of the den
tists, Drs. Barr and McCrady. All
school children's teeth of Heppner,
Lexington and Ione, and all rural
children who will apply for examin
ation, have had advice free of
charge. Thirty-two children have
followed this advice in having cor
rections made. Many more will fol
low their example during the summer.
National Child Health week was
a busy one for Morrow county. Miss
Lucy Case, the nutrition specialist
of Oregon State college, was with
us Wednesday, Thursday and Fri
day of this week. We took the
moving picture show of posture and
"Food Makes a Difference," to Irri
gon, Boardman, Hardman, Lexing
ton, Heppner and Ione. Friday
morning Miss Case attended the Ru
ral School Play Day at the Davis
school where she judged posture for
all school children present. The
nurse at this time gave a Hand
Wash drill in which all took part.
57 persons' hands were washed,
dried and finger nails cleaned in
seven minutes.
May second was used for Child
Health Day, county wide, In Hepp
ner. Nine o'clock found two volun
teer workers in each doctor's office
ready to assist with dental and phy
sical examinations of rural school
children. Dr. McMurdo was out of
town and his patients will be ex
amined later, but Dr. Gray exam
ined sixteen children before noon.
At one o'clock eight rural schools
entertained their friends in a health
parade which was ended with a
Maypole dance by the Heppner
school. This was highly appreciat
ed by all.
Before two o'clock 1000 persons
were at the Rodeo grounds to see
the boys of the grades from all over
the county competing in running,
jumping and ball throwing.
The evening entertainment start
ed at six thirty with a wienie roast
given by the American Legion for
the benefit of our new park and
playground. This was followed by
the Maypole dance and dancing all
evening.
It was almost a twenty-four-hour
celebration and appreciated by
health workers more than words
can tell. We would not forget to tell
our appreciation for the twelve mer
chants who gave money to be divid
ed among the rural schools taking
part in the parade. Heppner appreciates.
"Have you ever been sentenced to
imprisonment?" the judge asked
sympathetically.
"Never!" exclaimed the prisoner,
bursting into tears.
"Don't cry don't cry," said the
judge, consolingly. 'You're going
to be now."
