Judge It. L. Benge and Mrs. Benge
spent the Thanksgiving holiday in
Portland with relatives, and also
enjoyed a visit from their son and
daughter. Miss Luola came up from
Mcdford where she is teaching and
Terrel was there from Corvallis,
where he is a student for the win
ter at Oregon State college. Mr.
and Mrs. Benge found the highway
quite slippery in many places on ac
count of frost
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hall and chil
dren of Wapato, Wash., returned
home Sunday after visiting over
Thanksgiving at the home of Mrs.
Hall's mother, Mrs. Melissa Marlatt
of this city. Mr. and Mrs. Hall are
former Heppner residents, Mr. Hall
having been engaged in the meat
market business here several years
ago. They are now located on a
fruit farm In the Yakima valley.
Mrs. Sam J. Turner and Mrs.
Jesse O. Turner entertained the dif
ferent members of the Turner clan
at Thanksgiving dinner at the J. O.
Turner home on Thursday. All
branches of the R. W. Turner fam
ily were present with the exception
of Frank W. Turner and family who
were guests for the day at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson O.
Bayless.
John Frederick Slanger, aged 61
years, 3 months and 3 days, died at
Boardman at 7 o'clock on Thanks
giving evening. The Phelps Funer
al home prepared the body for bur
ial and It was taken to La Grande
on Saturday by Mr. Phelps, in which
City the funeral was held at 10 o'
clock Sunday morning, burial fol
lowing in the cemetery at Cove.
Among Heppner teachers who
journeyed to their various: homes
for Thanksgiving are Mrs. Adelyn
O'Shea, who went to Ellensburg,
Wash., Miss Miriam McDonald and
Miss Grace Nixon to Spokane, Miss
Helen Olson to North Powder, Miss
Blanche Hanson to Portland, Miss
Charlotte Woods to Dallas, and Miss
Bernita Lamson to Eugene.
Rev. Glen P. White united in mar
riage at the M. E. parsonage in this
city on Saturday afternoon, Miss
Ruby Flett of Condon and Lewis C.
Dyer, formerly of Fossil. The young
people are both members of promin
ent Gilliam and Wheeler county
families and they will make their
future home at Condon.
Max Gorfkle, Pendleton merch
ant, was a visitor here on Tuesday.
Monday E. O.: Asa B. Thomson,
formerly of Echo, was here yester
day and says he is to make his home
in San Francisco hereafter. Mr.
Thomson has been in Spokane for
some years past. His daughter is
now in San Francisco.
Wm. Tucker, who was In town for
a while on Tuesday, states there
was an abundant rain in the Black
horse section Monday night that
took on something of the propor
tions of a silver thaw, making the
ground pretty slippery. It did away
with the fog, however, and this
helps some.
Edward A. Lindeken of lone was
looking after business here on Tu
esday afternoon. With his family
he spent the Thanksgiving holiday
with relatives at Woodburn, and
they enjoyed a fine time. Good rain
over lone section Monday night and
the fog is all gone for the present.
Howard Swick and wife of Monu
ment were Thanksgiving holiday
guests at the home of Mr. Swlck's
mother, Mrs. W. O. Bayless, enjoy
ing a fine dinner along with other
guests of Mr. and Mrs. Bayless on
that day. They returned home on
Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Cochran and
Mr. and Mrs. Deb Bellenbrook of
Cecil were Thanksgiving dinner
guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
W. O. Bayless In this city. Mr.
Cochran Is a brother of Mrs. Bay
less and Mrs. Frank W. Turner of
this city.
Bert Johnson and Warren Stend-
er were up town on Tuesday from
the Johnson wheat ranch north of
lone, where Mr. Johnson reports
wheat doing quite well.
Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Cash and fam
ily spent Thanksgiving at the home
of Mrs. Cash's mother in Milton.
Ladies of the Episcopal church
will hold their annual bazaar at the
Parish House on Saturday after
noon, Dec. 6. Tea will be served
during the afternoon, beginning at
3:30, and supper at 6 to 7:30. There
will be a benefit bridge party in the
evening. 38.
Edward A. Notson and family
were Thanksgiving guests at the
home of Mr. Notson's parents, Mr.
and Mrs. S. E. Notson. They re
turned Sunday to their home at
Thorp, Wash., where Mr. Notson is
principal of the school.
A. E. Burkenbine, proprietor of
Heppner market is confined at home
suffering infection in his hand caus
ed by a knife cut on one of his
fingers. He is in a quite serious
condition and under the care of a
physician.
Walter Becket, Eight Mile farm
er, in town on Saturday, reported
the fog very heavy out his way, the
wires on telephones and fences be
ing borne down by the weight of it
and causing some damage.
Julian Rauch was attending to
business here on Saturday from his
ranch north of Lexington. At that
time it was pretty foggy out his
way, but he reported grain making
good progress.
Stanley Minor says that Mr. Hum
phreys' mysterious mine, which was
found near Parkers Mill last year,
was originated by a Scotchman who
lost a golf ball down a badger hole.
Dr. Clarke of the Clarke Optical
Co., Portland, will be in Heppner all
day and evening, Sunday, Dec. 14,
and Monday, Dec. 15, at Hotel Hepp

Tom Gurdane, sheriff, and C. C.
Proebstel, district attorney of Uma
tilla county, were in Heppner from
Pendleton on Friday, looking after
legal business at the court house.
Ed Drake, brother of Ray Drake
of Sand Hollow, left on Wednesday
morning by car for his home near
Los Angeles.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Marble and

Thanksgiving with relatives and
friends.
The Methodist Ladies Aid society
will hold a cooked food sale Satur
day morning, Dec. 20, at the corner

Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Peterson spent
Thanksgiving at their former home,
Pomeroy, Wash., enjoying a visit
with relatives and friends.

ranch of O'Conner brothers on Rhea

spent Thanksgiving with home folks
there.
