ALL SET FOR FOURTH.
INTENSIVE interest on the part of
business men of the city Indicates
that the eagle will be made to
scream at the forks of Willow creek
July 4, when Heppner will stage a
real old-fashioned celebration. Un
like Amos and Andy, who are hav
ing such a hard time raising money
for their picnic, all committees for
the local event have been function
ing smoothly, and the finance com
mittee especially has been greeted
warmly, this, more than anything
else, denoting the enthusiastic spirit
behind the celebration.
That the kiddies will not be over
looked, there are numerous cash
prizes to be vied for in sports dear
to the juvenile heart Reverting
back to the old-time Fourth idea in
this respect, the general committee
has sensed that child nature has not
changed materially and that the
things which made the celebrations
in their kid days dear to them, will
also bring joy to the youth of today.
They believe that the kiddies get
more thrill out of winning a little
money to do with as they please
than by being presented with some
article of merchandise that might
not appeal to them, hence all prizes
in the juvenile events are cash.
With older people it's different
They have all the money to spend
they need or if they haven't they
.should have. Also, they have exper
ienced the thrills of youth, and a
celebration to them doesn't mean
what it once did. That they may
be made to forget the cares of life
for a day, however, contests of a
light nature have been arranged for
them, too, with prizes in mercnan
dise, any of which w?ll be welcomed
by anyone, for if they have no need
for it, there still remains the thrill
of getting something unexpected.
A great deal of work as well as
money has been expended, and
when men will both work and spend
money to put a thing across it is
certain to be a go.
Whenever a person in Heppner
is asked where he is going to cele
brate, there's no hesitation now
"Why, up the creek, of course!"
Wallowa's altitudinous air and
sunshine, pure water and other God
given bounties are productive of
longevity. A Texas editor visiting
in the county was much impressed
with the many bewhiskered, white
haired gentlemen encountered there
and finally when one octogenarian,
from all appearances the grand
daddy of them all, happened along,
he exclaimed profoundly, "Diogenes,
where is your lantern!"
In Chicago, Alfred (Jake) Lingle,
reporter, knew too much; was mur
dered. Rarely have reporters been
killed for this reason.
Uncle Si Tinklepaugh sez Mr.
Stork's visitin' Lindy and Ann has

REVIEW THE LIFE OF CHBIST.
Matthew 16-28.
Rev. Samuel X. Price, D. D.
For six months the lessons have
followed through the record of the
life of Jesus as given by Matthew.
During the past three months the
period has been about nine months
in length and marked a new method
of teaching. Previously public ad
dress had been before crowds and
many miracles had been wrought as
seals upon His teachings. A new
method followed the appeal of the
crowd, after the feeding of the 5,000,
that He become the bread-making
King. Thence He began to train the
Twelve for the ministry they must
undertake after His departure.
A natural beginning in this re
view lesson Is to read the portions
In Matthew that are covered. They
are chapters 16-28. The quarter
opened with the quiz class near
Mount Hermon when Jesus asked
what people thought about Him. In
reply to the direct question about
the opinion of the disciples Peter
gave the declaration in the Golden
Text for today: "Thou art the
Christ, the Son of the living God."
It will be helpful If you will commit
to memory the Golden Text for each
of the thirteen lessons. They will
also be very suggestive In remind
ing yourself of the central teachings
In each of the lessons.
The territory covered is from Cae-sarea-Phllippl
back to Capernaum
and then on the further side of
Jordan, through Perea, to the fords
of the Jordan opposite Jericho and
thence the climb to Bethany and the
Holy City. Either follow each place
on a map as you, read the above
named chapters or, better still, draw
an outline map of Palestine and fill
in the details as you read. Draw
lines to indicate the Journey that
was traversed.

Coincident with the lowest quota
tions on wheat since 1914 comes the
report that the tariff measure has
passed both houses of congress and
awaits only the president's signa
ture, already promised, to make it
effective. Just one year, five months
and seven days a political football,
the tariff was passed by wise con
gressmen who, though not approv
ing of much of the content, thought
it better that the measure be passed
than that American industry be fur
ther punished through delay. Now
if what market dopesters have
blamed on the tariff be true, propor
tions of the farm dollar should be
come more acceptable.
While not being able to attend
the convention, being at the time
in California, the editor of this
newspaper was honored by election
to a vice presidency in the Oregon
State Editorial association. At least
he cannot be accused of hand-shaking
his way into office.

in 4-H club work in Oregon, but
now employed by a chemical com
pany at Boise, Idaho, was a business
visitor in Heppner Monday.

in making the meaning of Hi3 pro
found teachings clear. There must
have been many pauses by the way
side for special instruction during
the three months spent in Perea.
For additional incidents turn to
Luke 13-19. A Harmony of the
Gospel is invaluable in all such
study. That by Dr. A. T. Kooertson
is recommended.
One of the outstanding principles
enunciated by this Master Teacher
was an indication of the place that
a little child should have in the es
timation of the people. Wreckage
is found in adults but tremendous
possibilities are latent in the aver
aee vouth. He made a child the
greatest in the Kingdom of Hea
ven, and the world has not caught
up to that idea even now. Wonder
ful progress has been made, how
ever, since Robert Raikes started
the school in Gloucester, England,
150 years ago which has developed
into the modern Sunday School
with a membership throughout the
world of over 33,000,000.
Then came the Last Week, cen
tering around Jerusalem, which has
become an anniversary season
throughout the earth. Bethany was
the headquarters for a number of
days. From there the Triumphal
Entry was mado Into Jerusalem.
Teachings of abiding value were
given at every opportunity. Even
the most bitter enemy was not ex
cluded from the Instructions that
were given In Temple area and on
the Mount of Olives. The Jewish
Passover was ceremoniously observ
ed and then the Lord's Supper was
Instituted in the same upper room.
Following, the prayer season In the
Garden of Gethsemane, Judas came
with his dirty kiss, which all too
soon brought the Saviour to His
work of atonement on the cross at
Calvary. But that was not the end
as the disciples learned to their re
newed joy on the day of resurrec
tion. All these truths are for our
good that we may live the Jesus
way.
