Ruby O. Roberts received notice
that the contract for star mail route
No. 73126 has been awarded to Mrs.
Cecil Stefani. Her work will begin
July first, and will necessitate three
trips each week, each round trip be
ing about sixty miles. Mr. and Mrs.
Stefani will live in the Earle A.
Brown house on Third street.
When Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd King
returned recently from a trip to
Portland, they w ere accompanied by
Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Gibbs, who
will remain in lone until after har
vest Last Sunday the two families
spent a happy day picnicking in th ;
mountains above Heppner. Mrs.
King and Mrs. Gibbs are sisters.
Mr. and Mrs. Edison Morgan and
Gene Grabil motored to Baker Sun
day for a week's visit with relatives.
They were accompanied by Mrs. Ed
mond Bristow and two children who
were returning to their home in
Baker after a pleasant visit with
home folks here.
Mrs. J. E. Grimes is having her
residence on Second street painted.
The work is being done by Charley
Allinger.
Mrs. Fred Nichoson is so much
improved in health that last week
she was moved from the Heppner
hospital to the home of her mother,
Mrs. Katy Petteys, on Willow creek.
At the same time that Mrs. Nicho
son was able to leave the hospital,
Mr. Nichoson was forced to enter
the hospital for treatment He was
suffering from tonsilitis and quinsy.
Mrs. Katy Petteys who has been
very ill for some time is slowly re
covering. Mrs. Frank Engelman,
with the assistance of Mrs. Crystal
Sparks, is caring for the patients at
the Petteys home.
Mrs. George Frank and Mrs. Hen
ry Rowell and small son visited
Monday with Mrs. Hobart Helms at
Lexington.
Mrs. Bert Mason and son Dorr
motored -to Portland last week.
They will visit at the home of Mrs.
Mason's mother, Mrs. Adelia God
frey, and Mrs. Mason will attend
O. E. S. grand chapter as a delegate
from Locust chapter, and also in
her official capacity as grand repre
sentative of the District of Alberta.
Helen, the small daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Ralph Marlatt is still ser
iously ill. She is being cared for
at the home of a friend in Heppner.
Jack Campbell of Kelso, Wash.,
was transacting business in town
last week. Mr. Campbell is the
owner of the lone hotel.
George Wilson of Moscow, Idaho,
left for his home Sunday after a
pleasant week's visit at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Lee Beckner. Mr. Wi
son is an old friend of the Beck
ner's whom they had not seen for
nine years.
James and Edward Keller, sons
of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Keller of Pen
dleton, returned last week from
Kirksville, Mo., where they are stu
dents in the Still School of Osteo
pathy. They made the trip by auto,
coming by way of Minneapolis
where they picked up Ralph Thomp
sen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nicoli
Thompsen. Ralph has been attend
ing school in Minneapolis during
the past year. On Thursday James
Keller and his mother and Ralph
Thompsen drove over from Pendle
ton. Here Mr. Thompsen met his
son and the Kellers spent a couple
of days visiting relatives and
friends.
The Missionary society of the
Congregational church had its reg
ular monthly meeting Thursday af
ternoon. The subject under discus
sion was interesting items of the
eurly missionary history of Oregon.
Mrs. Louise Louy was elected pres
ident of the society, to fill the office
left vacant by the removal of Mrs.
Martha Dick. The next meeting
will be July 3.
Mrs. Lavern Jackson and small
son of Oakland, Cal., are guests at
the home of her mother, Mrs. Rosa
Jackson on Second street.
Mrs. Lee Beckner very delight
fully entertained the town baseball
team at her pleasant ranch home
on Wednesday evening of last week.
Fried chicken with all the fixin's
was served to sixteen guests and
Mrs. Beckner states that it took ten
cf her best fries to satisfy the gas
tronomic cravings of those hungry
boys. Coming as a pleasant sur
prise to Mrs. Beckner, ihe apprecia
tive guests presented her with a
large silver serving spoon and a set
of silver orange spoons.
Three pupils took the eighth
grade examination which was given
at the school house June 5 and 6
by Mrs. Margaret Blake, member of
the lone school board.
The members of the Masonic or
der recently built a fence around
their property on Main street which
adds greatly to the appearance of
Masonic hall.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lleuallcn mo
tored to Portland Sunday. Mrs.
L'uallen goes as a delegate to Eas
tern Star grand lodge which Is be
ing held this week.
The Carnival dance given Satur
day night by the American Legion
auxiliary was well attended and
those present report a good time.
The ladies will clear between fifty
and sixty dollars.
Twenty-two children were exam
ined at the child health clinic held
Monday in lone. Miss Edith Stal
lard, county nurse, was assisted by
Dr. McMurdo of Heppner. Miss
Stallard announces that she will be
here again on Tuesday, June 24, for
similar work.
Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Ahalt depart
ed Monday for their home in Baker.
Mr. and Mrs. Ahalt have been hold
ing a week's religious services in
Ii ntecostal mission.
Miss Hazel Feldman who gradua
ted June 2 from Oregon State col
lege, Is now at the home of her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Feldman.
Miss Elva Balsiger will graduate
from the University of Oregon June
16. Miss Balsiger has been major
ing In romance languages. She will
ti ach mathematics and French rext
year in the high school at Rivcrton
where J. Clifton Tucker Is principal.
Mr. Tucker has Just completed his
fifth vear at Riverton and is to re
turn next year. He was formerly
principal in the lone school.
Dell Ward is nursing a broken
arm as the result ot trying to crank
a vicious truck. The fracture is on
the right arm near the wrist
Charles Conner and his mother
and Mrs. W. J. Blake motored to
Washougal. Wash., Saturday, at
which place the Conners will visit
relatives and Mrs. Blake will visit
her sister. Mrs. J. R. Gtilick.
Mrs. W. J. Blake, who is worthy
matron of Locust chapter, O. E. S.
of lone, is in attendance at grand
chapter convening in Portland this
week.
Our baseball boys journeyed to
Wasco Sunday to meet a crushing
defeat. Next Sunday lone will play
at Heppner.
W. E. Bullard returned Monday
to lone. As soon as possible the
Tullard family will be leaving for
their new home at Gold Beach.

D. H. Grabil who has been quite
ill for some time, was taken to the
Heppner hospital last Friday morn
ing. He is reported to be resting
veil.
Mrs. John Cochran is serioi sly
ill in a hospital at Yakima, Wash.
Mrs. Cochran recently underwent a
second operation.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Davidson
of Cleveland, Ohio, called to lone by
the death of Mr. Davidson's father,
Lewis P. Davidson, arrived Monday.
They were met at Pendleton by H.
D. McCurdy and Earl Morgan.
LOCAL NEWS HEMS
Mr. and Mrs. Hobart M. Lovett of
Berkeley, Calif., visited at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Spencer Crawford
over the week-end. Mrs. Lovett is
Mrs. Crawford's sister and accom
panied Mr. Lovett on a tour of Ore
gon, while enjoying a two-week's
vacation. Saturday they made a
trip to Emigrant Springs on the
Old Oregon Trail, going with the
Crawfords. Sunday the two famil
ies went to The Dalles, the Lovetts
going south to see Crater lake and
to return to California via Klamath
Falls. Coming to Oregon they came
by the coast route.
Judge R. L. Benge returned to
Heppner Sunday from Portland
where he had undergone an opera
tion some time ago. He is looking
well, although a trifle under weight.
Judge Benge was on duty at his
office in the courthouse Monday
morning and stated that it seemed
mighty good to be back in Hepp
ner once more. Returning to Hepp
ner with him were his son, Terrel,
who drove down to meet him, and
daughter, Miss Luola, who has just
completed her year's teaching at
Medford..
Mr. and Mrs. Vawter Crawford
started on a motor trip to San Fran
cisco, Calif., Monday morning, ac
companied by Mrs. William V.
Crawford and daughters, Nan and
Jo Ann, who are going to California
to join Mr. Crawford, who is in the
insurance business in San Francis
co. Mr. and Mrs. Vawter Crawford
will remain In the bay district of
San Francisco about a month, vis
iting at the homes of their sons,
Arthur and William Crawford.
Mr. and Mrs. William Armstrong
and Mrs. Dora Armstrong of Port
land, and Mr. and Mrs. Reuben
Wcitzel and Perry Colton of Walla
Walla. Wash., were week-end visit
ors at the home of Mr. and. Mrs.
George Howard. Mrs. Howard went
to Portland Monday with the Arm
strongs to see the Rose Festival.
W. E. Bullard who has operated
a drug store at lone for a number
of years, was a Heppner visitor Tu
esday night. He has opened a store
at Gold Beach, and returned to
Morrow county to close his lone
store and to move his family to
their new location. .
Miss Elsie Goodell of The Dalles,
home service worker of the Pacific
Power and Light company, accom
panied by her assistant, Miss Anita
Ladd, arrived in Heppner Thursday
morning to stage a two-day cooking
school at the local office of the com
pany. John McCarty, who formerly lived
in Morrow county, is critically ill,
according to word received Wednes
day by Leon Briggs from the secre
tary of the Masonic lodge at Hage
man, Idaho. He operated a meat
market here and married a sister of
Frank Sloan of Stanfifield.
Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Clark moved
Tuesday from their residence on
Baltimore street to the ranch for
merly occupied by Mr. Clark's fa
ther, the late Hiram Clark. The
ranch is located about one mile
north of Heppner.
Bernard McMurdo, while playing
on the Rood ranch, ran a nail in his
foot. He had accompanied his fa
ther, Dr. A. D. McMurdo, who went
to give medical attention to Harry
Rood.
Mrs. Earl Gordon mo'ied to Ar
lington Sunday evening with Mr.
and Mrs. Earl Snell of Arlington,
who had come to Heppner to see
the Arlington - Heppner baseball
game.
Mrs. Fred Nichoson of lone was
discharged from Morrow General
hospital Friday, having almost com
pletely recovered from a sinus in
fection. Miss Virginia Dix, who during the
past year has studied piano at St
Paul's academy, Walla Walla, Wn.,
is organizing summer classes. 13.
Mr. and Mrs. Noah Pettyjohn and
family came to Heppner Friday
from Morgan to do some shopping.
