WHY STREET SIGNS
A NNOUNCEMENT of the Lions
club that they would Investigate
the feasibility of labeling Heppner
streets and numbering houses has
created considerable interest among
residents. There are those who have
Bmiled at what seemed to them an
attempt by a small town to put on
city airs. What is the need of street
signs, anyway?
"I have been in Heppner only a
year," you might hear someone say,
" and I can find where anyone
lives."
That may be true. But can a
stranger do this?
Did you ever stop to think when
a stranger asked you where some
one lived, that it sounded not a little
"backwoodsy" when you told him
"to go up so many blocks, turn left
until he came to a concrete bridge,
then right so many more blocks.
and he would find such and such a
looking house on the corner on the
right hand side and that the party
he sought lived in another such
and such a looking house Just caty
cornered across the street"?
Another sample of the ludicrous
ness, inefficiency and costliness of
not having the streets named and
houses numbered is evidenced in
some Hre cases. Extinguishing of a
fire depends on the response of any
one who may volunteer, under the
present system, and though there
are always many ready and willing
to volunteer their services, a situa
tion something like this sometimes
arises: The siren sounds; a rush is
made for the telephone office.
"Where's the fire?" "Smith's," comes
the reply. "Jack or John?" "It's
Sam Smith's." Immediately word is
passed around that the fire Is at
Sam Smith's. Then the question is
heard on every hand, "Where does
Sam Smith live?"
A lot of costly time would have
been saved had it been possible to
say, "Fire at 13 Baltimore!"
Still another convenience and sav.
ing of time and money the signs
and numbers would bring about Is
the speeding of services of doctors,
plumbers, electricians, dellverymen
and telephone repairmen. Answer
ing of their calls is often delayed
through insufficient directions, while
patrons are sometimes inconven
ienced and mayhap, even facing dis
aster. A definite address would
speed up calls.
Again, who is there who would
not be pleased to have their mail
delivered at the house or store? To
get this service addresses are a ne
cessity. Once the town is properly
labeled, this service may not be long
in coming. Heppner's postoffice
business lacked just $1400 of being
sufficient to meet the requirements
in this regard, last year. It has
jumped more than this amount In
the last few years and continues to
increase. Why not be prepared to
bring about carrier mall service Just
as soon as postoffice receipts, the
only other stipulation not now ful
filled, reach the point to permit it?
A report of the Lions' investiga
tion has not yet been made. It is
to be hoped that the cost of labeling
streets and houses will not be found
prohibitive.

This is the second lesson study
taken from the Sermon on the
Mount. Though the few verses in
dicated are rich with helpful truth,
the entire chapter should be consid
ered. This Is another choice por
tion of Scripture to commit to mem
ory. The traditional place for the
delivery of this general message Is
the Horns of Hattin, just back of
the Sea of Galilee.
The prayer life of Jesus is men
tioned frequently. He spent the
night in solitary prayer before giv
ing this address to the multitude
and selecting His twelve apostles.
Many knew Him, for it was In the
very middle of His public ministry.
Prayer is vital In the life of every
one. This activity Is noted In every
race, though the function varies
greatly. To avoid throwing stones
at ourselves, it can be said that the
Moslem prays with much ostenta
tion when the call comes from the
minaret of the temple. Prayer
wheels are a device with some who
believe that they are credited with
a prayer every time that wheel
turns around. More intelligent peo
ple may be Just as ineffective when
they assume to pray.
Each one who really approaches
the Throne of God has a place, or
places of prayer. Thither we resort
that we may be alone with our Fa
ther. At times It may take longer
to pray the door shut, so we are
consciously together with Him, than
It does to offer our thanksgiving and
petitions at the Throne of Grace.
Luke gives the Lord's Prayer as
Jesus' reply to thfi request of the
disciples, "Lord, teach us to pray,
