One of the lesser luxuries that
each woman may enjoy without
thought of extravagance is that
dainty little personal habit the per
fumed bath. Certainly, after hours
of housework, nothing adds more to
the day's comfort than does this bit
of grooming.
Famous perfumers tell us that the
increasing popularity of the shower
bath 1b changing our perfume hab
its from the use of bath salts
which are not so convenient in con
nection with the spray to delicate
toilet waters which form an excell
ent base for the body powder dusted
on afterward.
The demand is for the lighter
flower scents that leave only a trace
of perfume. Among them lavendar
stands well toward the head of the
list; violet, lilac, mimosa, jonquil,
orange blossom all the simple, un
blended flower perfumes are espe
cially refreshing and do much to
make pleasant the home-maker's
work-a-day.

Baked apple
Cornmeal mush with cream
Broiled salt mackerel

Dainty Meat Dish for Luncheon
If you are at all fond of calves
brains try them this way: Soak
them over night in salt water; then
skin them; cover with flour, pepper
and salt; fry in plenty of butter un
til nice and brown.
Asparagus with Eggs
Open a can of asparagus, rinse
and drain. Cut in half inch pieces
and put in buttered baking dish.
Break six eggs over the asparagus;
dust with salt, pepper and grated
cheese. Dot with butter and put in
oven until eggs are set
Layer Salad ,
Arrange flat on a bed of Iced let
tuce an eighth-section of tomato,
overlapping a sardine, overlapping
a quarter-section of hard-boiled
egg; repeat; sprinkle with finely
chopped green pepper and celery;
dress with a bit of onion juice.
Cherry Custard Pie
Use canned or cooked cherries.
Brush bottom of pie crust with
white of egg; cover with cherries;
pour over this a plain custard mix
ture; put in hot oven for 3 minutes;
lower heat and bake until custard
is set and crust well done.
Mixing Mustard
To 2 tbls. mustard add 1 ts. sugar
and a pinch of salt. Add hot vine
gar gradually until mixture is of
the consistency of a thick paste.
The vinegar from a bottle of horse
radish may be used. If desired, and
a few drops of onion juice added, if
this flavor it liked.
Cleans Pewter
To brighten pewter, soak the
pieces for 24 hours in water con
taining potash in proportions of 1
qt. water to 1 piece potash the size
of a hickory nut Remove from
water, rub with a cork dipped in
oil, then polish with chamois skin
and whiting. Pewter once cleaned
in this way may be kept bright by
merely washing in hot suds.
Returning from a visit to the
Pendleton Round-Up to their home
in Eureka, California, Mr. and Mrs.
J. A. Urquhart passed through
Heppner, remaining here over night
Thursday. Mr. Urquhart Is in the
hardware business at Eureka and
he and Mrs. Urquhart are enjoying
their annual vacation by an auto
mobile trip over the Oregon coun
try. They are friends of Mr. and
Mrs. Joe Wllkins and remained at
Heppner long enough to make some
short calls on friends of the Wll
kins' here.

AFTER-SUMMER FIGURES.
How does your figure look at the
end of the summer? Have you
gained or lost or, miracle of mir
aclessustained a harmony between
the two and kept the perfect weight
Most of you have probably gained.
In spite of the fact that one exer
cises more In the summer and that
warm weather menus are Invariably
daintier than cold-weather ones,
more women take on weight In the
summer than at any other time of
the year. Probably because sum
mer is a season of laxity and self
indulgence in all sorts of vacation
pleasures and comforts. Reducing
diets are forgotten. Outdoor exer
cises create hearty appetites and
you succumb to the temptation of
all sorts of delicious, forbidden
foods and drinks.
I shall not quote ideal figures and
weights in this article. I shall mere
ly suggest that you consider your
own figure carefully and apply com
mon sense to your habits of eating.
The new fall colors and lines will
demand slim figures and healthy,
clear complexions to carry them off
fashionably. The right diet will take
car of both these points, to a large
degree. To bo sure, a winter diet
may be more substantial, generally,

How heavy a toll of deer has been
taken by the various forest fires
which have swept Oregon during
the past few weeks Is a problem
that Is demanding attention of the
officials of the state game commis
sion. In the country back of Esta-
cada where thousands of acres were
burned over a great many deer
were undoubtedly killed by the
flames. Just how many will never
be known, and no estimate can be
made until a survey of the country
is made. Deer are said to "lose
their heads" when In a forest fire
and often times they run into the
Are rather than away from it The
country back of Estacada is a deer
haunt Sportsmen who are acquaint
ed with the territory believe that
if any considerable portion of the
deer in the fire swept locality made
their escape they would have been
observed by the wardens and Are
fighters, but few were seen fleeing
to safety. The game commission
gets some consolation In the
thought that perhaps a considerable
number of cougar the worst enemy
of the deer lost their lives in the
fire.
The postponement of the opening
of deer hunting season will cut a
big hole In the annual receipts of
the state game commission. Many
hunters who had long made plana
to hunt on the original opening
date of September 15 will be unable
to go into the mountains when the
season Is opened. Consequently they
will not purchase licenses. Many

not Increase the amount of food you
eat in the winter If you are over
weight Instead, be sensible, and
cut down on calories until your
weight is somewhere near normal

Begin your diet with plenty of
water. Drinking water facilitates
the digestive processes and helps
the pores of the body to keep active
and healthy in their function. From
six to eight glasses a day are neces
sary. Eight to ten are better. And
twelve best of all.
Here are a few suggestions for
reducing luncheons:
One egg omelet (100 calories). v
One glassful of milk (SO calroies).
Celery, lettuce and apple salad (25
calories).
Average serving of clear soup (15
calories); with 12 oyster crackers,
(50 calories).
Two heaping tablespoonfuls bak
ed beans (100 calories).
Five sliced pickled beets (25 calor
ies). One medium baked apple with
one tablespoonful cream, no sugar
(100 calories).
Two heaping tablespoonfuls boil
ed spinach or turnips (25 calories).
Average serving of boiled lean
fish such as cod or halibut (about
235 calories).
Small slice corn bread or brown
bread, unbuttered (100 calories).

fires have changed tfieir plans. They
will not buy licenses, and the game
commission, which depends upon
the sale of licenses for the continu
ation of Its work of propagation
and protection, suffers.
Those sportsmen who prefer the
hunting of pheasants are getting
their scatter guns in readiness for
the opening of the season on Octo
ber 15. On that date the hunting
of Chinese and native pheasants,
sooty or blue grouse and ruffled
grouse will be permissible. A bag
limit of not more than four of any
of these birds may be taken in one
day, and there is a limit of eight

Fred Larson of Marshfleld was
arrested on Spetember 12 on a
charge of hunting deer with a flash
light, plead guilty and was fined
$200 and costs before the justice
of peace in Coqullle. According to
the report of deputy game warden
Hearing, Larson killed a doe on the
night of September 11. The meat
taken from Larson was turned over
to the Coos county farm. L. J.
Hadley and Harold Hadley, father
and son of Vale, were arrested for
killing and possessing deer meat
during closed season, on September
14 and fined $100 and costs each, in
Burns. Deputy warden McClees had

made a practice of hunting several
days before the season was due to
open, followed them Into the Steens
mountain country and made the ar
rests. The meat was given to the
poor farm at Burns.
P. B. Peterson of Portland was a
visitor at Heppner on Friday. Mr.
Peterson was formerly a resident
of Heppner, working in the store
of Minor & Co. back in 1904 and
1905. He is a traveling salesman
now, and this is his first visit to
Heppner since leaving here, and he
enjoyed calling on many former
friends.
