HAH. THE GRAF ZEPPELIN
IN the sixteenth century Magellan
circumnavigated the globe in a
sailing vessel, and the fact has been
drummed into the heads of school
children ever since as one of the
most progressive steps taken by
man up to that time. Now we are
face to face with a new circumnav
igation of the globe by means of a
modern airship a feat that would
have been thought impossible even
a few years ago.
The Graf Zeppelin is now reach
ing the end of its round-the-world
tour from Lakehurst N. J., to
Lakehurst, N. J., with only three
stops in between. Think of It
Never yet has there been such an
undertaking, and every indication
points to complete success.
The first jump, from Lakehurst
to Germany, was accomplished In
the record time of 55 hours, without
mishap.
Day by day the eyes of the world
are focused on this great, epoch
making flight an event that will
loom far larger in the history books
of the future than the famous feat
of Magellan.
The flight of Dr. Eckener and his
crew presages a new era of progress
it has the most vital bearing on
future commerce and travel. All
hail the Graf Zeppelin!
WATT BEFORE YOU DENOUNCE
" A NOTHER group of bureaucrats
fa pesterine the farmers," and
"only one more commission afford'
ing jobs at Washington at fat sal'
aries to its members," is how Sena'
tor Glass speaks of the new Federal
Farm Board.
This is not at all creditable to his
judgment As he probably knows,
Mr. Legge, Chairman of the Farm
Board, accepted the position at
great personal financial sacrifice
and none of the other members of
the board are likely to grow weal'
thy on the salaries they get from
the government
The board is only a few weeks old.
So far it has been making an earn'
est effort to gain first-hand know
ledge of the problems with which
it will have to deal, and its few sug
gestions to various farm groups
have seemed to be well considered
and economically sound.
We must wait before passing
judgment on the farm board. The
board deserves a fair chance.
can only be judged by results, and
it will naturally take some time be
fore these can be expected.
1UOTHING In the daily news late-

of a thrill than the Portland ball
club's sensational rise from cellar
position to head the Pacific Coast
league. With a record of 15 straight
wins they dumped Seattle Into the
cellar and took the San Francisco
Seals from the lead position into
fifth place. We of Eastern Oregon
share In Portland's elation that she
at last has a team with a show for

has been 15 years since McCredie's
wonder team brought the last pen

may have been only that long, but
Its historic recital has led us to be
lieve that it happened some time

get a thrill from watching this new

EZRA'S RETURN TO JERUSALEM
Ezra 7:6-10; 8:21-23, 31 32
Eev. Samuel D. Price, D.D.
About 80 years after the first re
turn to Jerusalem from Babylon,
under Zerubbabel, Ezra led a sec
ond expedition of size. There was
the constant urge upon the devout
Jew to have part In the restoration
in the land which had been given
him in perpetuity by Jehovah. This
work of leadership had become a
matter of conscience to Ezra as he
meditated on the entire situation,
for he "had set his heart to seek
the law of Jehovah and do It, and
to teach to Israel statutes and ord
inances." Authorization had been obtained
from King Artaxerxes and special
royal favors were granted. There
is a fine admixture of faith and pru
dence In Ezra. Though much trea
sure was carried no armed escort
was requested. Such a request could
not be made In view of the way In
which he had declared concerning
the keeDinar power of Jehovah. A
survey stop was made at the river
Ahava. When the census was tak
en It was discovered that not a
Levlte was In the company. From
of old this tribe had furnished those
who ministered In the worship of
sacrifices and offerings, and these
were very elaborate. A t once chos
en men were sent back to the bre
trip of the big dirigible actually
started from Germany and will fin
ish there. The first leg of the air-
voyage from Lakehurst, N. J., to
Friedrichshafen was only a prelim
inary. That's all right, we'll let
Germany have the credit to which
she is entitled but when the big
ship gets back to Lakehurst we
maintain she will have circled the
globe and should she not make it
from Lakehurst home. Captain
Eckener will still have done that
which he started out to do. The
world is no longer interested In
which nation does it, so much as in
the feat itself, that marks a new
era in human progress.
Unbalanced Ration May
Cause Premature Laying
Allowing the pullet flock to c$me
into laying too early is like crying
after the milk is spilled, says F. E.
Fox, poultry husbandman at the
Oregon experiment station. The
harm is done and there is nothing
much can be done about It Of the
two alternatives open in such a case
letting the pullets come into full
laying or of holding them back,
neither gives very desirable results.
The cause of this early produc
tion is usually an unbalanced ra
tion, often involving too much nu
trient and not enough frame build
ing feed, and especially too much
protein, says Mr. Fox. Skim milk,
fed with a ration already including
sufficient protein, is often to blame.
While it is difficult to check on the
grain and mash consumption, Mr.
Fox advises that it be roughly two
parts of grain to one of mash for
the latter part of the growing per
iod.
Another means of getting the de
sired frame development in the
young birds is by keeping oyster
shell and granulated bone in the
hoppers at all times, says Mr. Fox.
Fresh cut greens, run through
green feed cutter are valuable as a
tonic, a laxative and a source of
vitamins. Other factors found es
sential in the well-being of the flock
are shade, either natural or artifi
cial, a good supply of water, and
freedom from mites and lice.
When the flock is about three and
one-half to four months of age is
also a good time to vaccinate
against chicken pox and to brand
the birds as an insurance against
poultry thieves, advises Mr. Fox.
The birds may be handled at that
age without upsetting them badly,
while leaving these operations un
til later may cause them to lose
part of the profitable production
period.

Money and vaiuaDies to tne ex
