FETISHES and medicine men be long to a bygone age. Only among certain tribes in Africa, Aus tralia, and a few other isolated peo ples of the world now classed as barbarous, do men rely upon incan tations of a grotesque old man, or spirits believed to be contained In inanimate objects, to cure their maladies. These are classed as rid iculous by a civilized world. Gone, as well, is the Indian's remedy for smallpox exercising until he had reached a high state of perspira tion and over-exertion then jumping into cold water, which procedure invariably caused his death. Still there are people who believe vaccin ation to be a machination of the devil, and who would die fighting before they would let their children be touched by the needle, today, however, the once dreaded scourge of all scourges, smallpox, is rarely fatal and is fast passing from the picture, thanks to an enlightened world and the progress of medical science. Smallpox, scarlet fever and diph theria, those household plagues of yesteryear, are now classed by phy sicians as preventable. In an at tempt to completely eradicate them within the state of Oregon, a cam paign has been instituted to have every child immunized betore en tering school this fall. The cam paign is also intended to have every child inspected for physical defects that a sensible method of correc tion may be used and each child be given its just right to unhamp ered educational opportunity. It is the most comprehensive campaign of the kind ever instituted within the state and has the cooperation of private physicians as well as county and municipal health oth cers, school officials and civic or ganizations. It should have the co operation of every parent as well. Heppner, with one of the recog- nizedly outstanding school systems in the entire state, should be one of the first cities to carry the cam paign out to a successful conclu sion. Let every parent be able to say, My child is ready for school physically," when school opens Sep tember 9. The campers you like to follow Burn all papers and other com bustible refuse. Bury cans, bottles, and other things which will not burn. Pull tent stakes. Leave a little firewood. Keep the water supply pure. Do not deface signs nor mar green trees. Are careful with their "smokes." Drown their camp fire OUT. Eriefly, they leave a safe, clean and orderly camp. DEEP IN THE HOLE. (Myrtle Point Herald) GOVERNMENT reports show the Postoffice Department deep in the hole for the last fiscal year, yet no one is surprised. As long as it is burdened with inconsistent rulings; as long as it engages in the printing business, furnishing printed envel opes below the cost of material, It will continue to lose money. There's no more excuse for the government being in the job printing business than there is for it being in the shoe business. Yet it prints, at a huge loss to the taxpayers of this country, millions of envelopes that should be turned out by job print ing offices a fine graft for the con cern that has the printing contract unimy Brljoul Ifoaafltt International Sunday School Lesson for for August 25 REBUILDING THE TEMPLE Ezra 3:10-13; 6:14-16; Psalm 84:1-4 Rev. Samuel D. Price, D.D. Return from Babylonia had been for a purpose and that was to re establish former conditions in the land from which the Jews had been taken into Captivity. Attention was naturally first given to homes for their families. Then came atten tion to the rebuilding of the Tem ple. While one can approach Jeho vah from anywhere religious exper iences in all lands has shown that formal places help greatly In devel oping right habits in prayer. We have our special places In our homes where we involuntarily go when we desire to approach the Throne. Then we have the Holy Sabbath and on that day we join with others in worship at a com mon place. The return of the seventh month, In which there are so many sacred days for the Jews, resulting in the climaxing of their purpose to enter upon the great undertaking of building again the Temple on Mount Moriah, which had been a place of Jehovistic worship since Abram replaced Isaac with the ram for the sacrifice. This second Temple was larger at the base than the one erected by Solomon, though not as high. National conditions were such that the rich ornamentations could not but a little rough on the public pocketbook. Don't be surprised to hear that this department loses mil lions annually. The surprise is that we go right on electing men to con gress who haven't the nerve to take this department out of the printing business and set it to doing what it was originallj- intended to do, and no more to handle the U.
