HEPPNER GAZETTE TIMES, HEPPNER, OREGON, THURSDAY, AUGUST 1, 1929. PAGE FIVE LooH Hupp J. W. Becket Is up from his Port land home, looking after the har vesting of his grain on the Eight Mile farm. From reports the crop Is turning out well this season. Mr. and Mrs. Becket Just recently re turned from a visit to their former home in Kansas, visiting also In Oklahoma and Missouri. In the latter state Mr. Becket found very poor automobile roads and lots of mud, so he parked his car while he made a Journey on Into Illinois and visited the scenes of his early man hood. He reports that the Journey was a very pleasant one, but re grets that Missouri is not up to her sister states in getting "out of the mud," even though she Is a won derful state otherwise. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Devine of Lex ington visited in Heppner on Sat urday. Joe reports his wheat har vest all over, the most of the grain in the warehouse, all of it sold, and now he is working hard to spend the money something less than a million dollars by the time another harvest rolls around. We suggested to Joe that if he found he was not going to make It, he might call on the editor of this paper for help, as we know how to get rid of all that it is possible to get hold of. He got an average of 18 bushels per acre of good wheat Harvey Bauman has finished with his wheat harvest and reports a general average yield of 19 bush els per acre. His yield was cut short on account of the necessity of reseeding quite a large acreage in the spring. His fortyfold yielded quite well, however, going 25 bush els. He did not contract all his wheat, but what he sold brought $1.10. Adam Knoblock, government hunter, was in town Saturday. He has been working Just recently on Kelley prairie, where the coyotes were causing B. B. Kellcy quiet a loss In sheep. Adam captured 7 of the brutes, one being an old lady that had foiled the hunters for years and during this time had worked havoc on the Keley sheep. Dlllard French and son Jack brought in a fine bunch of beef cat tle from their Long Creek range on Saturday for shipment to the Port land market from the local yards. From the appearance of these ani mals, range conditions must have been good over that way up to the present. Jasper Crawford of the Gazette Times force departed on Friday morning for Eugene to take In the closing day of the Sunset Trail pageant He expected to be absent for at least a week on summer va cation, and thought he might travel as far south as Crescent City, Cali fornia.
