District Attorney Notaon, County
Judge Benge and Chief of Police
Devin arrived home on Monday
from Missoula, Mont., where they
went the past week to attend the
anti-crime convention of Northwest
Sheriffs and Police. The gentlemen
made a record drive home as they
left Missoula early on Sunday morn
ing and reached Walla Walla at
8:30 that evening, taking plenty of
time to come on home from Walla
Walla and Pendleton on Monday.
Our officials at Missoula enjoyed a
fine visit with Frank Borg, former
Heppner boy, who has been in bus
iness there for many years, and
was greatly pleased to see some of
the folks from the old home town.
E. D. Hallock, cashier of Farmers
and Stockgrowers National bank, Is
off on his summer vacation. He
left Heppner early Friday morning
for the headwaters of the Imnaha
river In Wallowa county, where he
hoped to And good Ashing. He ex.
pected to Join Roger W. Morse, for
mer Morrow county agent, and to
gether the men expected to go Into
the mountains from Pine valley on
the Baker side. President Beymer
of the bank is over from his home
at Monument to remain during Mr.
Hallock s absence.
Miss Luola Benge arrived home
on Sunday morning to spend the
summer with her parents, Judge
ana Mrs. K. u Benge. Miss Benge
following her graduation at Uni
versity of Oregon, departed on a
trip to New York city to attend a
national gathering of her sorority,
and she returned via the southern
route and California. The coming
year she will be teacher of English
in the Medford high school, under
Superintendent Hedrick.
Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Humphreys de
parted on Wednesday morning for
Eugene where they will take in the
Sunset Trail fete, and have a visit
with their daughter, Miss Evelyn
Humphreys. Mrs. Humphreys plans
to return home the first of the com
ing week, while Mr. Humphreys will
remain in the Willamette valley for
a more extended visit among rela
tives. Mrs. O. G. Boyd and children,
Louise and Phil, who were guests at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. W.
Smead, left for their home at Cald
well, Idaho, on Saturday. Mrs. Boyd,
who is a daughter of Mrs. Smead
and Mrs. Lena White, her sister, re
turned during the past week from
a visit with other relatives at
Marshfield.
Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Eskclson arriv
ed last week at Lexington from
their Salem home, expecting to stay
in this vicinity for some time. Mr.
Eskelson owns a wheat farm near
Lexington and has other interests
In this county, and he Is always
glud to get back to eastern Oregon
and visit with the old-time friends.
Mrs. Henrietta Cohn and daugh
ter, Miss Elinor Cohn, are visiting
in this city with Harold and Henry
Cohn, sons of Mrs. Cohn. Mrs.
Cohn has Just returned from a visit
with relatives at Boise, Idaho, while
Miss Elinor had been visiting at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Hughes
at Umaplne.
W. V. Pedro, Heppner fiockmas
tcr, was delivering 1300 head of
lambs at the local yards on Tues
day. The lambs were purchased by
Frank Oxman, who shipped them
out
Mrs. E. Pavld, of Berkeley, Calif.
was a visitor for a few hours in
Heppner on Saturday, making calls
on numerous old-time friends. Mrs.
Pavld was on a visit to her sister,
Mrs. Inez Freeland at lone, who.
with her daughter, Mrs. Omar Riet
mann, accompanied Mrs. Pavid to
Heppner. These people will have
a trip to Yellowstone National Dark.
Mrs. Pavid went on to La Grande
on Sunday to visit with brothers
residing there, and will Join the
others at that point on the Journey
to me park.
Returning Friday evening from a
day spent at Pendleton, where they
visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
J. B. Cooley, Mr. and Mrs. Vawter
Crawford and daughter, Mrs. J. O,
Turner and her son Don, were ac
companied by Miss Jean Crawford
of Walla Walla, who is visiting with
ner relatives here for a couple of
weeks. Miss Crawford Is a niece of
V. Crawford and Mrs. F. S. Parker,
being the daughter of Mr. and Mrs,
O. G. Crawford.
Mrs. S. E. Notson and daughters.
Misses Mary and Margaret, Edward
Notson, wife and son, Chas. Notson,
Miss Opal Brlggs, all of this city
ana v. M. Sackett of Portland
made up a party that left Heppner
early Monday morning for Wallowa
lake, where they will spend a week
vacationing.
W. T. Craig was here Friday from
his wheat farm northwest of Lex
ington. He has Just finished his har
vest, getting an average yield of
around 20 bushels, and has his
wheat all in the warehouse. He
harvested one quarter section of
very fine quality Turkey red.
Millard French arrived here on
Sunday morning from Spokane and
will make an extended visit with his
sister, Mrs. L. W. Briggs and fam
ily. Mr. French has been absent
from Heppner for about two years,
making his home in Stevens county,
Washington.
Mrs. Olive D. Bassett, mother of
Mrs. Joseph Hughes, is visiting with
ner daughter and family. Mrs. Bas
sett arrived from her home in Port
land the past week and expects to
remain here for a month at least
George Howard, assistant mana
ger In the local branch of J. C. Pen
ney company, arrived home at
Heppner on Monday from his two
weeks of vacation, spent at Pom-
eroy, Wash., Portland and Seaside.
Harvey Harshman, Eight Mile
wheatralser, was in the city on Sat
urday attending to business affairs.
