THE SAFETY DRIVE.
HEPPNER opens the safety drive
with the police girls from Holly
wood assisting, and everybody will
be up and doing to eliminate death
and injury as far as humanly possi
ble. Cooperation on the part of the
motorists and the public is absolute
ly necessary and is asked for in this
drive. The police girls will give
away, after stopping the motorists,
different parts of the motor law on
headlights, spotlights, rear lights
and signals. This will be done for
the purpose of acquainting the mo
torists with the amendments to the
law, and for the purpose through
the police girls of seeking the help
in reducing the long lists of acci
dents and deaths. The drive is giv
en strictly for the purpose of help
ing to reduce accidents and giving
the motorists a better understand
ing of the law. Motorists are urged
to help the situation out by respond
ing to the different tests and pre
serving copies of the law for future
reference.
ANOTHER USE FOR NEWS
PAPERS. WHAT is more useful than a
newspaper? When new, it sup
plies news and advertising that give
its readers essential information.
When old, it is used to wrap things
in, in place of a tablecloth at pic
nics, etc. Now another use has been
found that should interest every
housewife.
May Keithline, of the South Dako
ta State College, has discovered that
old newspapers make an excellent
substitute for moth-proof bags for
storing clothing during the summer
months. She says If clothing is
wrapped carefully in several thick
nesses of newspaper, protection is
provided at very small cost News
papers make especially good moth
proof wrappings because printer's
ink is objectionable to moths.
She recommends that garments
be dry cleaned before being stored
away for the summer, since soiled
clothing attracts moths more than
clean clothing. Garments should
also be brushed to remove moth
eggs which may have already been
deposited. Thoroughly sun the gar
mentsthen put them away and,
if you are inclined to believe in the
efficacy of Miss Kiethline's idea, use
the newspaper.
P. S. Newspapers also keep busi
nesses from being motheaten. The
secret lies in wise, effective adver
tising. THE NEW CURRENCY.
THERE has been a mad scramble
on the banks to acquire some of
the new, unfamiliar, attractive cur
rency. The treasury is prepared to
meet the demand only to a limited
extent, because of the big problem
of distribution.
So if you have not any of these
new bills yet, don't be worried.
Twelve months from now the old
bills will be a curiosity, not the new
ones.
The new ones, by the way, are ex
pected to save the government
about $1,500,000 a year, due to their
small size. The new bills are more
convenient in every way, make
counterfeiting more difficult and
are more durable than the old bills,
which will improve the sanitary con
dition of the money we handle.

wroth, who formerly lived at Hepp
ner. Enterprise Record-Chieftain.

THE STORY OF DANIEL
Daniel 1:14, 19, 20; 2:17-24
Rev. Samuel D. Price, D.D.
This book which will be studied
for three weeks is rich in thrills.
Youth is particularly fascinated In
reading these accounts which help
to emphasize the fact that truth is
stranger than fiction. Plan to read
all twelve chapters in these three
weeks. Portions especially Indicat
ed for study this time by the Les
sons Committee are 1:1-21; 2:13-19;
7:28; 8:15-18; 9:20-23; 10:1-19; 12:9.
Daniel did not follow the saying
which is an excuse for many extra
sins when away from home: "When
in Rome do as the Romans do." Had
he even observed the example of
his own people when back in Pales
tine he would have followed the
base customs of the Babylonians.
Here Is a lad who was deported as
a captive and who held to the ways
he had .'earned in his home back in
in Judea.
This fine young fellow was soon
noted by Aspenaz, the keeper of the
eunuchs in the household of Nebu
chadnezzar. When the king asked
that likely lads be searched out and
brought to him for special favor
this Jewish boy was chosen, as well

The date of first publication of this
as three of his companions. The
specifications were a "youth in
whom there is no blemish, but well
favored and skillful in all wisdom
and imbued with knowledge and un
derstanding science, and such as
had ability to stand in the king's
palace." At once these four, with
others In Babylon, were Invited to
eat the fancy food that was pro
vided at the court table.
Principle asserted itself above the
desire to gain a place in the house
of the king. There, meats that had
been offered to idols would be serv
ed. These the Jew must refuse for
conscience sake and Daniel does
this very thing. He asks that he
and his friends may follow a vege
tarian diet and drink only water
during the coming ten days of prep
aration. They know that they will
be phyBically better than those who
would eat foods that would not be
body-bulldlng. When the test came
it took only a glance to show that
the appearanco of those who fol
lowed the simpler diet was superior.
Then came the mental examination.
In this they stood "ten times better"
than all the lads of Babylonia whom
Aspenaz brought forward. Thus
Daniel was well started on the road
that led in time to the prime min
istry of the country to which he had
been carried as a captive.

THE BRIDGE OF SIGHS
Recently a very rich and nation
ally-known citizen was sentenced to
serve a term in jail, and was Anally
placed there that justice might pre
vail over all. Just what the offense
was, that brought this punishment
does not concern me particularly.
Guilt must be assumed if proven be
yond doubt. I did notice that the
term of imprisonment was compara
tively short
Almost at the same time, a poor
old washerwoman, living in a great
city near me, was arrested "with
the goods on her." She had, in her
squalid apartment, something like
a gallon of corn whiskey; she ad
mitted dispensing thi3 liquid from
time to time, in order to ease the
financial going; she was 81, and not
able to turn out washing as in her
younger years.
Recent enactments made hers an
almost capital offense. The Jurors,
kind and heartful men, were puz
zled; had this very old woman ex
erted her utmost strength, she could
not have done much harm to any

A question as to the justice of the
law arises, but it should not There
is no extenuation in violation of law
by rich or poor, young or old. The
so-called crime wave is appalling;
the law must be stern and prevail
or fall down in its impotence. It
must not fall down.
Age and condition are no excuse
for crime. Ignorance and self-will
are the causes of most violations of
law. Even poverty does not Justify
a man or woman to rob, or to enter
into unlawful commerce.
It never pays, even to violate an
unreasonable law. Such laws are
not done away with by that method.
