VIOLATORS FACE HEAVY
FIXE.
NUMEROUS amendments were
made to the state prohibition
laws during the last legislative ses
sion, and among these is one that
has been somewhat of a puzzle to
local law enforcement officials. This
amendment on its face seems Incon
sistent and out of harmony with the
provisions immediately following,
but the ruling of the attorney gen
eral is that no mistake was made
and the law must be enforced as it
reads. His attention having been
called to this particular piece of
legislation, he looked up the record
and finds that in all cases where the
word "more" appeared, it was made
to read "less" and this would con
firm the opinion that it was the
intention to have it read that way.
The particular section in question is
2224-61 of Senate Bill No. 133, which
bill provides for amending numer
ous sections of the prohibition law.
We quote in part: -
Sec 2224-61. Any person or per
sons who shall violate any of the
provisions of this act shall be deem
ed guilty of a misdemeanor and.
upon conviction thereof, except in
cases where the punishment is here
in otherwise specifically provided,
shall be punished by a fine of not
less than 1500. or by imprisonment
in the county jali not more than six
months, or by both such fine and
imprisonment in the discretion of
the court
Provision is also made for a sec
ond violation and the penalty is a
fine of not less than $100 nor more
than $500 and Imprisonment in the
county jail not less than 30 days nor
more than one year. The way the
law reads the jail sentence goes
with the fine where the party has
been convicted of the violation the
second time. Thus the second of
fense carries a penalty but little in
excess of that provided for the first
It is quite evident that the only
way to escape the heavy penalty
carried In this amendment is to be
a law abiding citizen. The bootleg
ger and moonshiner is up against
this heavy fine upon conviction.
THE COURAGE OF PUBLIC
SERVANTS.
MUCH has been made of the fact
that Alexander Legge gave up
a $100,000 a year position as the
President of the International Har
vester Company in order to become
the Chairman of the Federal Farm
Board of President Hoover at a
yearly stipend of $12,000.
Naturally this was a very cour
ageous, a very public-spirited act
and we applaud it with the greatest
enthusiasm, adding our thanks to
the thanks of the nation.
At the same time we want to
point out that to the glory of our
nation, the ranks of our public bod
ies are filled with others no whit
less self-sacrificing and courageous.
Men sticking to public offices for
years, who would have made for
tunes in the business world; men
working for the benefit of the coun
try, who curtail the private activ
ities on which they really "cash in."
We applaud their patriotism.
It is one of the greatest traditions
of this country this willingness of
competent men to subjugate their

ezekiezj's vision of hope
Ezekiel 47:1-9
Rev. Samuel D. Price, D.D.
When half of the Seventy Years
of Captivity was over Ezekiel had
the vision of the Stream from the
Temple in Jerusalem. Hope Is a
wondrous stimulus in the midst of
any distressing condition. The heart
of devout Jewry was still in the
land that Jehovah had given them
in perpetuity. God is always timely
in His promises, and the things
thus assured must come to pass.
Meanwhile there is inspiring cheer
to encourage In the midst of daily
toil.
Read chapters 40-48 as they are
an entity. You will go with Ezekiel
to Jerusalem, In 40:2, and behold
the Jews restored to their tribal
possessions, with a rebuilt Temple
In the midst of the Holy City. The
prophet declared the vision with as
surance, knowing that his Lord
could bring all to pass. The people
listened with rapture, for their
fondest hopes were being portrayed.
With exactness the very footsteps
had been traced as Ezekiel tells how
he was guided by the angel. Water
within the city had always been a
problem, and particularly so in time
of war. It was startling to behold
water flowing continuously from the
temple area wall. Usually the most
that could be counted on was the
water held In some cistern. The
only explanation was that the altar
was at the source thereof. A thou
sand cubits were measured as the
flowing stream was followed. Since
a cubit was from 18-21 Inches the
distance was about one third of a
mile. Then another standard Is
private interests to the interests of
the nation at large.
It is a great and noble tradition
that helps every one of us every
day of our lives.

used, the stature of a man. The
water was ankle deep, but it, flowed
onward, which was contrary to ex
perience in Jerusalem. Another
1,000 cubits and knees were cover
ed. Again the same distance was
measured and the stream was now
loin deep. A fourth 1,000 brought
them to a condition where even a
man was out of his depth and could
swim at will.
This vision was not portraying a
wonder. The waters were flowing
for a blessed purpose. They issued
from the city wall, entered the Ked-
ron valley and rushed onward and
downward to the depth of the Jor
dan at the Dead Sea. All had been
desert desolation. Attention was
then called to the conditions at the
side of the stream. There was now
rich vegetation and productive
trees. Though the Dead Sea is Ave
times saltier than the ocean its wa
ters were made sweet as the stream
Issuing from the Temple altar flow
ed Into it Now life could be found
in the sea that had been called
"dead." In fact "everything shall
live withersoever the river cometh."
This stream of fulfillment can be
followed In the progress of Chris
tianity. One third of the race has
already named Him, and all man
kind Is helped thereby as Christian
izing civilization reaches them. No
previous condition of man Is too
hard but that life can be changed
for the better. The Golden Text is
similarly prophetic: "Of the In
crease of his government and of
peace there shall be no end." Isaiah
9:7. A broader life was pictured for
Jewry. Thus far they had lived for
and largely within themselves.
Though Jonah had given a great
teaching they had yet to learn that
"Other sheep I have which are not
of this fold." '
