FAREWELL,
SHERLOCK HOLMES.
SHERLOCK HOLMES Is dead. Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle has again
anounced that he will never revive
this world-famous character.
But not only is he dead in fiction
the Sherlock Holmes type of de
tective is now seen as doomed in
fact
Baffling mysteries are no longer
to be solved by cleverness. They
are to be unraveled by scientific
experts relying upon standardize
tion methods of precise identifica
tion. Before the National Conference
of Weights and Measures at Wash
ington, William Souder of the Bu
reau of Standards some weeks ago
made predictions that may event
ually take all the romance out of
criminal hunting.
He showed how the most cunning
criminal of the future will be dis
covered through super-microscopes
that will tear his identity from a
typewritten document, a pistol ball,
a cartridge shell or a signature.
The coming cut and dried meth
ods may take some of the thrill out
of the accounts of the exploits of
detectives on the trail. But they
may eventually reduce crime to a
minimum by making discovery vir
tually certain.
MARION T ALLEY'S MODEL
FARM HOUSE.
NOT only has Marion Talley, fam
ed opera star, who announced
she was giving up her career to
enter agricultural activities, actual
ly bought a farm, but she has de
cided to build a farm house to serve
as a model for wives In the Kansas
wheat belt
Miss Talley's 360 acres near Colby,
Kansas, are level, treeless, unbrok
en, with rich black dirt everywhere.
It is ideal land for wheat
In the immediate vicinity of her
farm, Charles M. Talley, her father,
met and wooed her mother, Mrs.
Talley.
Soon Miss Talley will begin to
build her house on the ground she
has purchased, and it will be equip
ped with all modern conveniences,
especially in the kitchen.
Miss Talley hopes she can prove
to Kansas farmers that their wives
might just as well have the com
forts and labor-saving devices of
their city sisters. She plans to visit
among them, encouraging the com
forts and conveniences of new
housekeeping methods.
We want to wish Miss Talley
great personal success in the opera
tion of her farm. And express our
admiration of ber spirit of helpful
ness in desiring to make her house
a model for others.
W. O. Bayless, accompanied by
Mrs. Guy Boyd and son of Caldwell,
Idaho, and Mrs. Lena White of this
city, departed the first of the week
via McKenzie pass for Marshfield,
where they will visit at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Curtis. Mrs.
Boyd was a guest at the home of
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. W.
Smead.

International Bon day School Lesson
for July 14
Ezekiel 33:7-16
Object lessons were often used by
Ezekiel. At such times he always
had a curious If not Interested aud
ience. People are Invariably attrac
ted when something is being shown.
Before the fall of Jerusalem the
minister to the captive Hebrews at
Tel-abib in Babylonia took a piece
of tile and drew the outline of Jeru
salem thereon. The Temple appear
ed in the center and the city was
surrounded with Implements of war.
The siege was Indicated as he plac
ed an Iron pan between himself and
the wall, and lay there for days
eating a rationed portion of bread
daily. In time a refugee arrived
declaring all that had taken place,
and that the city was no longer a
habitation for its founders.
Sick at heart the people suffered.
Many were not Individually respon
sible but were In captivity because
of the prolonged and wilful sins of
their ancestors aB a whole. Up to
this time much had been declared
about class responsibility. Hence
forth more is to be proclaimed re
garding personal responsibility.
Have you read the second third of
Ezekiel as was called for in the
study last week? The special por
tions for today are all of chapters
18 and 33. Nothing can take the
place of your own careful Bible
reading.
Imagery Is used again as Ezekiel
Is called a "Watchman" by Jehovah
and commanded to be very faithful
In performing the trust involved In
that office. It Is a poslstion of great
responsibility. Lives of many others

Benge, Judge of the County Court of
the state of Oregon for Morrow county,
made and entered on the 9th day of
July, 1929, which order provided that

IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF THE
STATE OF OREGON FOR MOR

Eliza Walbridge, Plaintiff.
vs.
Jane Doe Noyer, wife of John Noyer;
T. W. Halley and Jane Doe Halley,
his wife; George W. Ayers and Etta
Ayers, his wife; Mary E. Kirk, a
widow; William A. Ayers and Dora
Ayers, his wife; Thomas W. Ayers
and Laura Ayers, his wife; Ida M.
Fell and George D. Fell, husband and
wife; Elsie I. Lasater and James Las
ater, her husband; Edgar B. Avers
and Danna Ayers. his wife; Josephine
Forwood, a widow; Pauline Quatd, a
widow; Ralph Swinburne and Mable
are involved. Danger is at hand
and at times must be met with life.
Failure to do duty as a watchman
is often punished with death In
times of war.
The question, "Am I my brother's
keeper?" is clearly answered. Wick
ed men must face the death pen
alty due because of their sins. But
what shall be done to those who
stood lazily by and never raised a
signalling hand or pleading voice to
hold them back from the logical
consequences of their own ways.
The answer from Jehovah, through
Ezekiel, Is that all are held respon
sible who could have given any
warning. "His blood will I require
at thy hand." Excuses are not
listed. Just one thing Is called for,
namely to definitely warn the wick
ed concerning the way he is surely
going.
Suppose the wicked persists in fol
lowing his own way after you have
spoken? That places an added re
sponsibility on him and frees you
from any participation, through
knowledge, in his wrong doing.
The very heart of God was laid
bare by Ezekiel. In times of des
pondency It is easier to say, "God
does not care." Punishment of the
wicked Is one of the safeguards of
society. It helps deter others from
transgressing the law and thus be
comes a protection to all. God's
pleasure Is In the restoration of the
wicked to a safe and constructive
manner of living. Even good deeds
in the past will not help under con
demnation for sin at God's bar of
Judgment Neither will open sins
of the past stand In accusation
against any one who In true peni
tence seeks forgiveness In the Fath
er's appointed way.
The Family Treasury
Jimmy Brown was a money mak
er in a modest way. He had the
bungalow almost paid for, and Mrs.
Jimmy Brown knew the meaning
of team work in the matter of over
coming difficulties.
It was in the late autumn that
Mrs. Jimmy began to think about
a new rug, and a few pieces of more
tasty furniture for the coming
spring. She had grown tired, as
any good woman must, with the
ceaseless dusting, sweeping, chang
ing positions of the antiquated sofa
and worn rockers she just couldn't
make the-living-room look cheery
any more! But the relentless mort
gage kept eating Its way into the
family treasury; until it could be
paid off. . . .
The little wife decided to Btop ev
ery leak in the family budget she
could and to save closer if possible,
but how? There was just thirty
five cents In her purse a dime and
a quarter when her resolution was
formed; she would save every dime
that came her way. She put the
