Ol'B VOTE.
THOSE who were privileged to
a hear Mrs. Harold feat at Chau
tauqua Sunday night, came Into
contact with a rare personality and
intellect that could not help but
leave an indelible impression. From
a fountain of sincerity and under
standing welled at once a plea and
a prayer for a new world under
standing to the end that costly and
destructive war should never again
be a plague among nations.
Mrs. Peat knew the World war
at its worst Her heartstrings
were wrung to the near limit by the
loss of fourteen male close relatives
who paid the supreme sacrifice in
the service of their country. She
herself served in several capacities
in war work, and saw first hand the
suffering, desolation and death
which are the true wages of war.
Her discourse, from a fruitful
supply of experience, intelligence
and education, constructed logical
ly, was more than convincing it
was moving. It made her listeners
want to act If Chautauqua brought
no more than Mrs. Peat, it would
pay its way a hundredfold.
FATHEK'S DAY.
JUNE 16th is Father's Day, and we
want to urge everyone not to
overlook this occasion. For some
reason, Mother's Day is much more
widely observed than Father's Day.
This is understandable in the light
of the beautiful sentiments that are
aroused by the very word "mother1
yet father need not be neglected
as too often he seems to be.
Father may seem indifferent to
such an occasion as Father s Day.
Probably, if asked, he would call it
"nonsense" and ask his children to
"forget it."
Father may seem austere, or too
practical to care for such trinkets
as you might be moved to purchase
for him, or, in many cases, it might
seem ridiculous to present him with
a gift out of his own money.
But remember one thing! A man
is only a boy grown up. Your fath
er, no matter what his exterior, has
hidden away in his heart a little
boy. And that little boy will come
to the surface and with father will
retire to his room as happy about
the red pair of suspenders, or the
tie, or the box of cigars that you
have given him, as any little boy
would be about a box of marbles
or a baseball glove.
Don't be fooled by your father,
He likes little attentions just as
much as mother does.
THE LIMIT OF MAN.
THERE is no way of predicting
the extent of developments in
the radio field. Tests by the Can
adian National Railway near Tor
onto indicate the futility of predict
ing the ultimate destiny of radio.
It is possible now to talk casually
from moving trains, to send tele
grams from them, and to broadcast
from them.
Years ago it was thought the ul
timate was reached when phono
graph records broadcast were heard
over a comparatively short distance.
At that time anyone suggesting
that broadcasts might be made
from a moving train would have
been considered insane. In ancient
times such a prophet would have
been burned at the stake for witch
craft. Yet these miracles have come to

JUDAH TAKEN CAPTIVE
II Kings 25:111-13
REV. SAMUEL D. PRICE, D. D.
Everything that Is repeated may
not be so, but it is wise to give heed
to the second call, especially if it is
the policeman's whistle. A person
can make irrevocable mistakes by
going headlong heedless. For years
the prophets had sought to hold
Jewry back from their sins against
Jehovah. There had been Hosea,
Amos, Joel, Jonah, Obadiah, Micah,
Nahum, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Habak
kuk and Zephaniah. We must ruime
those who pleaded with Israel as
well as those who sought to help
Judah. Then there was the great
object of the Captivity of Israel, the
ten northern tribes, in 722 B. C,
when so many were taken to the
region of Ninevah.
Read not only off the 11 Kings 25
but the related passages in Ezeklel
and II Chronicles. Jerusalem was
besieged for eighteen months. Even
the day is indicated when that final
prolonged attack began and also
when it ended. During the seventy
years In Captivity In Babylon the
Jews observed both of these me
morial days. The siege Is still ob
served in the Fast of Tebct, a day
of remembering by the Jews. The
next observance will be January 10,
1930. Portions of Lamentations are
read aloud at the time, for Jeremiah
therein makes very graphic the
awful miseries that prevailed with
in the Holy City. Both bread and
water finally failed. Meanwhile
counter walls were built by Nebu
chadneazar's men, that missiles
might be the better hurled Into the
pass, .and do not doubt it. others
are coming. There seem to be very
few limitations to the ability of
man to conquer the elements. But
there is one definite limit.
When Lieutenant Soucek sought
to make a new altitude record, eight
miles above the ground, he had to
breathe oxygen from tanks in order
to keep alive. As it was, breathing
was an agonizing experience. His
adventures proved there was a limit
to human progress in the sense that
man is enfined to the little globe in
which he is born.
A 16-YEAR-OLD school boy shot
and killed another school boy,
all over an 18-year-old girl in Port
land. The Portland Telegram print
ed all the love letters of this little
girl. We make no comment on the
Telegram, for this, for the simple
reason that as a newspaper it does
not amount to much anyway. But
we would like to see the picture of
the man who was responsible for
this printed in the Telegram. If the
Telegram is casting about for some
thing sensational of the oozy,
sloughing-cesspool type, It can print
the picture of its editor who is re
sponsible for this kind of journal
ism. Let the people see what this
kind of an editor looks like. He
could write an article and say,
proudly: "I'm the man who dissect
ed and laid bare the white soul of
this little girl. I'm the man whose
mission on earth is to jab my rep
ortorial pen into the heart of a
child and I do it so that I can sell
my paper for two pennies. I'm the
man who gloats on human grief,
and the tender sentiments of a little
school girl, written in innocence, I
would make sensational and sala
cious." When the Portland Tele
gram prints the picture of the man
on its staff who was responsible for
this inhuman act, it will achieve its
greatest sensation. How the mor
ons, neurotics and degenerates
would thrill at the picture of such
a man. Blue Mountain Eagle.

IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF THE
STATE OF OREGON FOR MORROW
COUNTY.
Mat Halvorsen, Plaintiff
H. J. Reed, Defendant.
To H. J. Reed, Defendant.
IN THE NAME OF THE STATE OF
OREGON: You are hereby notified to
appear in the above entitled court on oh
before the Twenty-second day of June.
1929, and answer the complaint filed
against you in the above entitled suit
or otherwise plead thereto, and if you
fail to so appear and answer the plain
tiff will apply to the Court for the
relief prayed for in his complaint,
which is as follows, to-wit:
For a decree against you and in
besieged city. Eattering rams broke
through the massive walls.
Zedekiah was the king. He had
been placed In that position by
Nebuchadnezzar, following a pre
vious attack, with the understand
ing that he would be loyal to the
Chaldeans. Instead Zedekiah sought
help from Egypt, In spite of Jere
miah's pleading to the contrary. As
the enemy came In, the king instead
of staying to help his people sought
safety with some of his strong men
In flight to a southern gate. They
were captured In the Jordan valley
and taken before Nebuchdanezzar
at Riblah, where he was directing
the attack against another nation.
Observe carefully how prophecies,
apparently contradictory, were ful
filled. Compare Jeremiah 32:4-5 and
Ezekiel 12:13. How could he be
taken to Babylon and not see the
city or the king there? Zedekiah
was forced to witness the slaughter
of his sons at Riblah, and then was
blinded at the king's order. He was
then taken as a capltve to Babylon,
but beheld neither king nor city.
Jeremiah was evidently in favor
with Nebuchadnezzar, who gave
him his choice of going to Babylon
or Bbaying In Jerusalem with "the
poor of the land," who were left
there to produce a revenue. This
continuing patriot elected to remain
where he thought he was most need
ed. Later when Gedaliah the gov
ernor was treacherously killed the
conspirators forced him to flee to
Egypt with others and tradition in
dicates that he was killed there.
Much of history is summed up in
the Golden Text: "Righteousness
exalteth a nation;
But sin is a reproach to any peo
ple." Proverbs 14:34.

A TRIBUTE
The finest example of military
courtesy I ever have heard of, the
most touchingly beautiful, was
when the allied commanders con
ferred on Marshal Ferdinand Foch,
the leadership over all the mighty
hosts rushing to the defense of the
great principle of world democracy.
Valiantly the little Frenchman
struggled, his back to the wall, con
fronted by a merciless foe. Modest
ly he accepted a position of supreme
trust, of highest honor. " And, he
pledged the support of a soldier
citizen, to maintain the dignity of
his exalted station. The eyes of the
world were upon him its prayers
with him.
At his command the legions
sprang to the conflict, against the
most terrible fighting machine the
world had ever known; a thousand
years of history were written with
in the compass of less than half a
bloody decade.
