A NNUAL school election nears and the patrons of School Dis trict No. 1 are reminded that this will be an event of Monday, June 17 just a week from this coming Monday. We are calling attention to this important matter in this manner that the voters of this dis trict may have due notice, it hav ing been heretofore asserted by some that this paper was negligent in this regard and that no proper notice of the annual school meeting had been made, thereby creating an excuse on the part of many for not being present when a director and clerk were chosen. The only interest that this paper has in the school election is one of a citizen and taxpayer in the dis trict We have always urged the patrons and taxpayers to take more interest in the affairs of the school, and show this interest by attending the annual and special elections. The choice of a director to serve for three years is important this year it is especially so. Mr. S. E. Notson, retiring director has been serving the district for a number of terms. He is thorough ly versed in sohool matters and has been a faithful member of the board, performing his every duty well. Whether he will be a candi date again we do not know, but be lieve that he should succeed him self on the board, because of his long experience in school work. But whether it is Mr. Notson or some other good man or woman, there should be a large attendance at the school meeting and every voter in the district who can possibly attend should be there. The meeting is called at the council chambers at 2:30 p. m., Monday, June 17 and the polls will be open for one hour, thus giving ample opportunity for every voter to cast his ballot Don't ne glect the annual school meeting. NEW PROBLEMS COMING. AUSTRALIA is planning to reha bilitate land, impetus to the movement having been given by the irrigation in America of previously unproductive parts of Texas and Arizona which have become very productive agricultural areas. In the eastern district of Victoria, an effort will be made to reclaim thousands of acres now given over to rabbits and bracken. A canal is planned in Central Australia, partly to improve trans port partly because it would so ef fect the clmiate as to increase rain fall. At the same time an American engineer has incorporated a com pany to reclaim more than 100,000 miles of the great Sahara Desert. If the scheme goes through and brings about the effect promised for it thousands of acres now barren will be made productive. All of these undertakings are commendable and show what rapid agricultural strides are being made. They are unmistakable, strong signs of a mighty progress. At the same time the successful completion of these plans, and the subsequent greater area of thriving farm land, will give farmers new problems to solve. mtitati rfj00l Skaamt International Sunday School Lesion Jons 9 THE STORY OF THE BECHABITES. Jeremiah 35:5-11 REV. 3AMUEL D. PRICE, D. D. Abstinence from the use of al coholic liquor Is not merely a twen tieth century issue. The incident of the lesson dates back to a pledge that was taken more than 2500 years ago and It is pertinent for study on this quarterly temperance Sunday. The fact that this is also Children's Day, which will be ob served in many parts of the world, suggests that by every means this world should be made a safe place for the children to live In. Young sters grow up in the environment made for them by the adults of the previous generation. Jonadab, son of Rechab, had his own ideas about the best ways in which to safeguard life. He thought that the cities should be avoided as so much evil centered therein. So he exacted a promise from his Im mediate kin that they should, with their successors, always live In tents and give up the pursuit of agricul ture, which tended toward settling in homes. Then to enable them to live up to the best in themselves he called for a further vow to drink neither wine nor strong drink. Re chab and his followers thus became nomads. When Nebuchadnezzar of Baby lon became the tyrant oppressing Jurah It became unsafe to rest any where in the open In that vlcniity. So the Rechabltes of that day sought safety, contrary to their tra ditions, In the city of Jerusalem. Jeremiah, by command of God, often presented the teaching to Jewry through an object lesson. He was told to Invite these refugee Re- ILLITERACY. T IS alarming to consider that there are 5,000,000 men and wo men in this country who cannot read or write. Almost a million and a half chil dren of school age do not attend school. Now the National Congress of Parents and Teachers is conducting a campaign to eliminate illiteracy. They hope to make great strides by 1930. If this association brings home to people the importance of educa tion and literacy, a great deal will have been accomplished. Illiterates are never "free." They are the ex ploited and oppressed at all times. There should be a minimum of il literacy in a country such as Amer ica, dedicated to the ideal of democ racy. Calvin Coolidge, when president, advocated the establishment of a Deparment of Education with a Sec retary in the cabinet to cope with the problem of illiteracy. The legislation was not enacted, however, and we respectfully sub mit the idea to the consideration of Herbert Hoover. Mrs. J. Arthur Craig is in Port land this week, enjoying a visit with friends. Here was a test of Jeremiah too for he was not a man to lead any into ways of evil or to undermine their right principles. The crowd eagerly watched the procession and followed to the rendevouz. They heard, as cups were offered and all bidden to drink the alcoholic bev erage, which was contrary to their vows. Jeremiah need not have fear ed the outcome. These Rechabltes did not even draw apart to talk over the situation and consider if it would not be wise to partake under the present circumstances. As unit they expressed their life-long habit and continuing conviction "We "will drink no wine." While the crowd listened, and doubtless regretted that the invita tion had not been extended to them, the prophet made his point by way of instruction from this acted para ble. He made It clear that these men thus honored the word and memory of an ancestor, whereas Is rael had been totally indifferent to the oft repeated commands of their Jehovah God. There should be greater regard for Him than for the say-so of any human. Again Jere miah predicted the overthrow of the nation, and Jerusalem was cap tured about 13 years later.
