LOOKING TO THE FUTURE.
THE development of the sheep in
dustry in the Northwest area has
been brought about by the over
coming of numerous difficulties, and
it would seem that the problems
have not all been solvedt Looking
to the future, a movement is now
on foot by the woolgrowers' asso
ciations of Oregon, Washington and
Idaho to establish shearing schools,
and the coming winter it is planned
to join hands with the State col
leges at Corvallis, Pullman and
Moscow in promoting a winter short
course for instruction in the art of
shearing sheep by machinery, this
having become the prevailing meth
od of getting the wool off the sheep's
back.
This move is found to be neces
sary because of the gradual reduc
tion in available shearers, and the
consequent advance in price for
shearing demanded by the union.
By the proposed schools it is expect
ed that some 500 or more new men
will be prepared to enter this field,
making available a sufficient force
to carry on the work more readily
and thus help the sheepmen get the
job done when it should be. At
least that many men are expected
to attend the schools this winter
and take the short course.
We understand the present price
for shearing is 12V& cents per head;
this seems to be satisfactory to the
wool grower, but he is facing de
mands for a rise, and it looks like
the price would advance to 15 cents.
The educational feature proposed,
and which will no doubt be put over,
should be one means of keeping the
price for shearing from advancing
to a point considered by the raisers
to be out of reason.
NOT A SINGLE ARREST.
THE town of Hooper, Neb., has
laid claim to the "Law Abiding
Championship."
It is a town of 1,014 population,
and during 1928 not a single arrest
was made within its borders.
All the people obeyed the law. At
least none were caught disobeying
it
William J. Dau, Chairman of the
Board of Trustees of that town,
says that the churches are well at
tended, the schools are well filled,
and the people mostly "mind their
own business."
That's the valuable lesson that
can be learned from the record of
this model town. The people most
ly "mind their own business."
When people do that, there is very
little chance of their breaking any
of the laws. More than that, there
is very little chance of the heart
breaking tragedies that happen
mostly because people attend to
other people's business.
Well said, Mr. Dau.
Your town is to be congratulated.

COMPOET FOR GOD'S PEOPLE
Isaiah 40:1-11
REV. SAMUEL D. PRICE, D. D.
In the midst of troublesome times
the prophet is declaring the blessed
condition of the future. Judah as
well as the ten tribes of Israel must
be carried away into captivity but
there would be a return to the land
which Jehovah gave in perpetuity to
his people. The day will again come
when the Hebrew will regain his
tribal possession in Palestine. Mod
ern Zionism is in full accord with
the teaching of the Bible.
Here is a lesson study where you
will do well to consider the exact
words of the text Their content is
rich in blessedness. The very sound
and phrasing is quieting and is like
an oasis in a vast desert of drear
iness, for too often, such is our
daily life. With special emphasis,
by reason of the repetition, the Al
mighty commands the prophet-messenger
to advise His people that
there are restful days ahead. There
fore, even now there is reason to en
Joy the repose of the soil that is
possible for the child of God. Turn
ing away from God led to the cap
tivity In Babylon. The peace that
passe th all understanding was still
to be the portion of His people.
The rough pathway of life was to
be made easy for the pilgrim en
route to the eternal Zion. Filling in
of valleys and lowering of moun
tains sound like modern methods
of road construction. In the Orient
such things have often been done
to make ready for the coming of
an earthly king. Now prophecy
says that royal preparation shall be
made for Just the ordinary traveller
heavenward. Withal, the glory of
imimy rljool ICpshiw
pounds drank 20 pints of liquor In
twenty hours the other day. Feeling
a little warm he took off his clothes
and strolled around the house to
cool off, contracting pneumonia
from which he died. It would seem
that a man who could drink five
gallons of bootleg hootch and sur
vive oughtn t mind a little thing like
pneumonia.
WOOD THAT WONT BURN.
A NORWEGIAN engineer has in
vented a process for impregna
ting wood with a substance that
renders it fireproof.
A building composed of timbers
of impregnated wood, it is reported,
was erected near Oslo, the Norweg
ian capital.
All efforts to set it afire failed.
Provided the cost of the process
Is not too great, the discovery is
very valuable. It will mean safer
homes. It will mean reduced insur
ance rates.
The very thought brings to mind
all kinds of possibilities.
It strikes us too that this kind
of wood has been known before.
Anyway, something just like it
seems to have been used in the
manufacture of certain foreign
brands of matches.
BLESSINGS.
"DLESSED are the merchants who
tJadvertise because they believe in
it and in their business; for their
prosperity shall increase many
fold," sagely remarks an exchange,
and adds:
Blessed is the woman who sends
in a written account of a party or
wedding; for she shall see the de
tails of a function and the names
of her guests correctly reported."
"Blessed are all those who do not
expect the editor to know every
thing, but who call up and tell him
whenever an interesting event oc
curs for them; for they shall have
a newsy paper in their town.
"Blessed are they who get their
copy in early, for they shall occupy
a warm place in the editor's heart
"Blessed are those who cooperate
with the editor in his efforts in be
half of the community; for their
town shall be known far and wide
as a good place in which to live."
There is a strong tendency on the
part of wool buyers to beat down
the price of wool this spring. The
conditions warrant a better price
for wool this year than was paid
last year, and as the season de
velops this will in all probability
prove true. It is a certainty that
tariff revision this spring will be in
the interest of the grower and jus
tify a better price. The buyers are
always pessimistic; that's their bus
iness; they are crepe hangers, and
the more crepe they can hang the
bigger and taller the feather in
their hat If wool takes a drop this
spring, then look out for it will only
happen when the bottom drops out
of everything else. Buyers will talk
about the hard winter and the wool
being broken, and foreign importa
tions and rayon and cotton and a
lot of other bogie bunk in their
efforts to drive the price down, But
neither domestic nor foreign condi
tions justify it; and wool should
bring a better price this year than
last, and some of the early sales in
Idaho this year prove it Canyon

Frailty in human life is akin to
the grass of the earth. The major
ity pass on early and few live be
yond the proverbial four score
years. In marked contrast the
"word of our God" is presented.
Here is that which must continue
to abide. Think of the attacks on
the Bible through all the ages past.
Many think it is an indication of
genuine Bmartness to endeavor to
discredit the Holy Bible. Groups
and even nations have sought to
show the Bible worthless. But
there never was a day when this
Book was more firmly established
as the guide for man in this life
and even unto Heaven. The product
in applied Christianity is sufficient
evidence for us to accept its teach
ings and live accordingly.
High privilege is given to Isaiah
as he is told to seek a mountain,
as it were, for a pulpit and proclaim
the glad tidings to all Zion. Thru
out the holy city, Jerusalem, he was
to go and let his voice ring In the
streets, declaring "Behold, your
God!" Jewry would be great, and
is marvellously so, because of their
Jehovah. He gives rewards for o
bedience, and makes joys to abound
for His children. Herein is the ba
sis for the opening words of encour
agement "Speak ye comfortably to
Jerusalem."
Under the simile that is repeated
so often in the New Testament an
other pastoral scene is presented.
He is the Great Shepherd of his
sheep and will feed them all in his
omnipotence. The little lambs are
likewise his constant concern. He
will adjust His step to their ability
and when one is too small or weak
to walk he will "carry them in his
bosom."
