Some understanding soul must
have created the designs for new
bath mats and Turkish towels for
not only have they backgrounds of
green, mauve, maize or rose, but
motifs themselves turn to all man
ner of sprightly themes for inspir
ation. And we have rollicking dolphins
disporting themselves across the
bath towel; such subtle suggestions
of spring and summer as the katy
did and what we take to be the
humming bird.
Pleasing color does indeed have
power to sooth ruffled early-morning
spirits; naive design is always
amusing. And since most of us
need as much help in this direction
as possible these decorative notes
find themselves most welcome in
the routine of making ready for the
day.
Menu Without Meat
Cream of Celery Soup
Baked Idaho Potato
Grilled Tomato
Mushrooms and Peas in Cream
Assorted Pickles
Brown Betty
Beverage
Bread Crumb Muffins
Soak 1 cup stale crumbs in hi cup
milk for 20 minutes; sift together
cup flour, Vi ts. salt and 2 ts. baking
powder; add to softened crumbs.
Add 2 tbls. melted butter and
enough more milk to make mixture
which will drop from spoon. Put
in greased muffin tins and bake in
hot oven 20 to 30 minutes.
Egg Balls Good Meat Substitute
Mash yolks of 4 hardboiled eggs;
chop whites; mix both with cup
bread crumbs and 2 tbs. grated
cheese. Season and add enough
cream sauce to make of consistency
to form into balls. Dip in raw
beaten egg, roll in crumbs, repeat
and put in cold place for 1 hour.
Fry in deep hot fat
Codfish Combined With Tomatoes.
Soak 1 pound of fish, drain and
flake, removing all bones. Fry two
medium-sized onions, diced, in but
ter and add 3 cups of tomato pulp
with seasoning to taste. Thicken
slightly and add fish. Serve on
fresh buttered toast or with baked
potato.
Bird's Nest Salad
Peel, chill and cut tomatoes in
halves; scoop out seeds and fill
cavities with small balls of cream
cheese mixed with cream, chopped
nuts and chopped chives. Dress
with mayonnaise. Serve on crisped
lettuce.
Removes Grease from Wallpaper.
Moisten a soft flannel cloth with
alcohol and rub gently over grease
spots on wall paper 'and they will
disappear.
When Serving Eggs to Children.
Eggs on toast are difficult for
little folks to manage, unless you
cut the toast into small cubes, leav
ing the slice in iU original shape be
fore putting on the eggs. Then they
are very easily eaten!
OBITUARY.
Ralph Julian Howard, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Richard Howard of Wa
pinitia, Oregon, died at that place,
Monday, March 25, of tuberculosis,
aged 35 years, 11 months and 3 days.
His body was brought to Heppner,
Wednesday, March 27, and funeral
services were held at the Methodist
Episcopal church, Rev. F. R. Spaul
ding, pastor, officiating. Burial was
in the Masonic cemetery.
Ralph was a former Heppner boy,
making his home with the family
in this city for many years, and
made many friends here. He left
Heppner about 16 years ago. The
family remained here until some
six years ago when they removed
to Wapinitia. He is survived by his
father and mother, Mr. and Mrs.
Richard Howard, Wapinitia, two
brothers, Jack and Marion Howard,
also of Wapinitia, and two sisters,
Mrs. Francis Griffin, of Eight Mile,
and Mrs. Byron Summers, of Yaki
ma, Wash. The surviving members
of the family were all present at
the funeral services.

MRS. SMITH THANKS FRIENDS.
Mrs. Mack C. Smith, who has
been 111 for the past year, and who
is still unable to leave her bed, was
very kindly remembered by friends
at Easter time. A lovely Easter
lllly was the gift of Mrs. W. P. Ma
honey, and the members of Maple
Circle, Neighbors of Woodcraft,
showered her with Easter cards, all
of which brought much cheer and
happiness to one shut in, and for
which Mrs. Smith is very grateful.
Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Burke were
visitors here while returning to
their home at Portland from a visit
at Athena with Mr. Burke's mother.
They were guesst at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Miller Huston, the
two ladles being sisters.
O. T. Ferguson of Ferguson Motor
company, went to Pendleton on Tu
esday, returnng with a new Olds-
mobile coupe. This new model is
a very attractive machine.
