St. Patrick's Festivities
at Elks Hall Saturday
Rev. Thomas J. Braily
On next Saturday evening' the so
cial features associated with Saint
Patrick's day will take place In the
Elks' temple beginning at 9 o'clock.
This celebration will include a
grand evening of delightful danc
ing, with music of the very highest
order delighting the throng. The
entire affair will be in the hands of
the boys and girls of the town, the
latter appearing in dainty Irish col
ors of green, white and gold, and
the former bearing the national
colors of the Emerald Isle in th
lapels of their coats.
The girls will wait upon their
guests and serve a delightful, ap
petizing collation or lunch a la
cafeteria style, the girls lending
their best endeavors to make their
guests feel at home. This lunch
will include coffee, or tea, sand
wiches, salads, and cake, and be
sold for twenty-five cents a service
Rev. Thomas J. Brady feels cer
tain that there will be no disap
pointment to abide in the breasts
of any guests. The evening's enter
tainment will close at midnight
The entire proceeds of this eel
ebration will go towards the pur
chase of a new site for the project
ed new church in Heppner. Father
Brady and the Catholics generally
ask the kind patronage of their
many friends in and around Hepp
ner. The patronage given the an
nual celebration of St. Patrick's
day last year will evoke a strong
measure of thanks from the people
should last year's success be re
peated. The entertainment will be
one long to be remembered by all
Music for the entertainment will be
of the very highest Everyone is
invited to assist
Wm Hendrix was moved from
Heppner hospital, where he had
been for several weeks receiving
medical attention, to his residence
located on his place on Heppner
flat. Mr. Hendrix is not improved
in health, but is gradually growing
weaker, but it was thought that he
could be just as well cared for at
his home. Willow lodge No. G6, I
O. O. F., is caring for him and have
secured E. Albee as nurse, and in
charge of Mr. Albee and other mem
bers of the lodge, Mr. Hendrix was
taken home on Friday.
Sterling Fryrear, Rhea creek
ranchman, was looking after af

Getting there ahead of the trouble
Durino the afternoon of March 17, 1928, an alarm
bell rang in a telephone test station. This meant that
a puncture had been made in the air-tight sheath of
a busy inter-city cable. The men on duty knew that
the injury was somewhere within 60 miles.
Highly developed locating devices were instantly
applied and in sixty-five minutes the trouble spot was
located. By 7:15 in the evening, before the break
in the sheath had afFectcd service on any of the 248
pairs of wires in the cable, the repairs had been
made without one conversation being interrupted.
This special alarm system is one of the many mechan
ical and electrical wonders developed by Bell System
engineers to guard telephone conversations.
Automatic warning signals, electrical locating de
vices, constant testing of all switchboard apparatus
and circuits these arc some of the ceaseless efforts
that so effectively reduced interruptions to service
on Bell lines in 1928. There is no standing still in
the Bell System.

Ever Forward
The Spirit of Progress
"For I doubt not through the ages an increasing purpose runs,
And the thoughts of men are widened by a process of the suns."
EMERSON.
The poet has given expression to the
Spirit of Progress that moves men ever
forward to greater and greater heights
of achivement.
Today miracles have become com
monplaces the radio carries the hu
man voice from nation to nation, the
airplane spans continents with incred
ible swiftness. The future will see yet
greater miracles greater conquests of
time and apace and greater industrial'
growth.
One of the most effective ways of aid
ing Progress is for all the residents of
a town to join hands, cooperating in the
great work of fostering community
growth.
Help the corner in which you live to
grow, and you contribute to the growth
of the entire world... Let us then hasten
Progress by devoting ourselves to the
best of our ability to the enhancement
of the growth and prosperity of this
community.
