Om NEW PRESIDENT.
17HEN Herbert Hoover takes the
oath of office on March 4, his
voice will be heard throughout the
world.
His inaugural address will reach
not only millions of listeners in the
United States, but also other mil
lions of listeners in foreign coun
tries.
The radio has advanced to an al
most unbelievable extent Recently
programs from London were heard
in New York with absolute clarity.
Now this progress makes it possible
for not only America, but also oth
er nations of the world, to hear the
voice of Hoover as he dedicates
himself to the leadership of the
American people.
How fitting that this should be
so! For his activities during the
distressful times of war in foreign
lands have endeared him to the en
tire civilized world, his election was
hailed with enthusiasm in messages
from many countries the world has
its eye on Hoover, and now the
world will be able to hear his first
words as he assumes the highest
office of his country.
The very thought thrills one
the world has moved forward in
deed! Think of George Washing
ton's inauguration address his
words were not known for days
after the event by persons within a
narrow radius, they were not heard
save by those who were within the
range of his voice. Today, a man
in the remotest corner of the land
may be "present" at an important
ceremony simply by turning on a
dial.
WHEN A WOMAN DRIVES.
DR. VITELES of the University of
Pennsylvania has made a very
interesting survey of automobile re
cords.
He reports that women drivers
become involved in accidents three
times as often as men.
At first blush this seems to be
rather an indictment of the woman
who drives. But let us examine the
fact further.
Most of the accidents in which
women are involved are minor ones.
They are able to act intuitively and
quickly in an emergency, and so
there is much less damage than re
sults from accidents in which men
are involved.
In addition, most of the accidents
that happen to women drivers are
the result of their carefulness.
They drive slowly, and are struck
far more frequently than they
strike other cars, bearing the brunt
of the recklessness of others.
However, it is a common failing
of the woman driver to be Inclined
to choose the center of the road,
even when she is going slow.
SPEAKING of prohibition, witness
the continued existence of the
dandelion after years of effort to
stamp out this pest Yet no one
who cares anything for a beautful
lawn has come forward with a pro
posal to legitimatize the stubborn
weed. Wouldn't a yard full of the
golden yellow blooms look gay and
attractive in the springtime? But

REV. SAMUEL D. PRICE, S. D.
Jesus laid down very few rules
He did announce principles which
would determine right action under
varying circumstances. No elabor
ate organization was established to
carry forward His program. During
the three years and three months of
public ministry many called disci
ples attende his peripatetic school
From among those learners twelve
were inducted Into the apostolic
otflce.
The Kingdom of God was fre
quently mentioned and was explain
ed both by direct and parabolic
teachings. This Kingdom is where
the will of God is done on earth,
even as it is in heaven. The Church
is a term which grew up in apos
tolic days and means In particular
those who are called out. That word
has various meanings today. We
are not discussing any reference to
a mere building, but rather to the
comprehensive organization that is
called by that word. Strictly speak
ing, the Church is Invisible and Is
composed of all those who are in
the company of believers and obey
ers. The common use of the name
Includes all who are members of
the organized, or visible Church.
The various denominations are not
under consideration either; there
are more than 200 Protestant sects
In the United States alone.
Read, with close attention, the
passages which are Indicated for
study today. In addition to those
named above, we have Matthew

CHANGING
This is an era of changes. And
we relish them to the point of
hearty welcome in most instances.
Those who do not change once in a
while gradually drift into that leth
argic state of mind which we call a
rut and everybody resents that.
The same suit of clothes worn for
too long a time grows tiresome to
our neighbors, if not to ourselves,
though the garments are by no
means worn out People relish con
trasts, especially when the change
is for the brighter, the newsier, the
more attractive. And this applies
to our reading matter, I think, fully
as much as to mere physical appear
ances. So the readers of this paper will
notice our abandonment of things
and words with the medical tang.
Ever alert for the best at his dis
posal, our editor believes that an
inspirational diet will be relished
for awhile; he believes, and I agree
with him, that the mind should be
refreshed as well as the body; so it
greyish down around the hedge, the
bushes and driveway. And then in
mid-summer with the broad leaves
withered brownish and dried, what
an aftermath for so bright a begin
ning. So the husbandman goes on
digging dandelions in order that the
home may be blessed by a cool,
green refreshing lawn all season
long. So, also, with prohibition, the
nation goes on fighting the corrup
tion and destruction and disappoint
ment wrought by the liquor traffic
with the best weapon that has vet
been devised. LaGrande District

Then turn to the word "Church" in
any encyclopaedia for many general
statements. You can find books on
Church History in any public li
brary. In a recent lesson study we had
Peter's confession, "Thou art the
Christ, the Son of the living God,"
which Jesus Himself declared to be
the foundation on which the spirit
ual church would be built. Well may
the beginning be called, in the para
ble, a grain of mustard seed. The
growth has been marvelous. The
World Almanac indicates that 566,
210,000 are classed as Christians in
the world's population of 1,619,764,
000 Thus one-third of the race
claims relationship to Jesus Christ,
the founder of the Church.
The different members have vary
ing anility, said Paul in writing to
the Romans, but all are "one body
in Christ." The trouble is that too
many do not live up to their spirit
ual possibility. It is stated that
nine-tenths of the work in the aver
age church is done by one-tenth of
Its members. Failure cannot be
charged against the Church, but
that indictment can be charged
against the majority of Its constit
uency. The failure is because the mem
bers of the body will not coordinate
with the Head, as set forth in Ebhe-
sians. Christ is called also the
"chief corner stone." All the bodily
life, thinking of an individual, and
all construction, having an edifice
in mind, must be with reference to
Founder and Saviour. Then e-lnr-
ious attainment can be had, for we
again behold the goal: "Unto the
measure of the stature of the full
ness of Christ."

is with no little satisfaction that I
take up the pleasant duty to which
I am assigned.
There has never been a time when
the thinkers of our beloved coun
try have been sought with such
positive energy. We are interested
in everything good; the bad forces
itself upon us, whether we will or
no. "Prove all things; hold fast to
that which is good." I don't know
of any better advice than that.
I heartily wish I could hear all
the comments that may be aroused
by the things I shall try to say to
you, dear friends, during the next
years. Maybe some of you will dif
fer with me; and some of my per
sonal friends may even clip out
something of mine and put it in
the scrap-book; I shall dream that
way, at any rate. And I fully ap
preciate the honor or taking the
place of a beloved writer who has
lately been called to the higher
sphere.
May I hope that there is just a
little corner somewhere in your
heart for me to creep into and be
happy?
ST. PATRICK'S CHURCH.
Rev. Thomas J. Brady, Pastor.
Next Sunday will be the third
Sunday of Lent, and within a few
days one half of this holy season
will have passed into history. The
prophet of old was told to announce
to the people of populous Nineveh,
"Yet forty days and Nineveh shall
be dsetroyed," and the forty days
were eagerly sought for by the cit
izens as days of repentance and
return to God. Surely on observing
things around us on almost every
hand the conviction forces itself
upon the thoughtful mind that there
are occasions when the same cry
could be raised. No Christian should
let this season go by without mak
ing some special return to Christ.
The Catholic church has daily ser
vice each morning at 7:45, and on
Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays
another form of special devotions
at 7:30 in the evening. All are
invited to these services regardless
of church affiliations or r,n o',ii'

tions. The pastor gladly extends an
invitation to anyone who really
wants spiritual direction or comfort
to see him.
On next Sunday there will be
mass in 'church at 8:30 with con
fessions and holy communion be
fore mass; there will be a second
mass in Lena at the home of Mr.
John Brosnan at 10:30.
On Wednesday evening the pastor
will preach upon "The Soul of Man
the Image of God Hmself." On Sun
day night at the same hour as on
Wednesday, that is, at 7:45, he will
preach upon "Is One Religion as
Good as Another?" and "Does it
Matter What a Man Believes?" An
invitation is extended to all. Non
sense and unbridled license can in
vade so-called religion as well as
anything else. New thought can
arise in the genuine religion of
Christ. Seeming religion and Be
ing religion are two different
things.
On the" third Sunday of March
there will be no mass in Boardman,
as it will be Saint Patrick's Day.
The pastor will make his monthly
visit to Boardman on the fourth
Sunday of March.
