HEPPNER TO HAVE TOURNA
MENT.
OFFICERS of the Umatilla bas-
ketball conference have voted to
hold the play-off tournament In
Heppner, following a request of the
Heppner Business Men a luncheon
club that it be staged here. A large
turnout of members at the Monday
meeting of the club enthusiastically
endorsed the Idea, and put machin
ery to work to guarantee success
of the tournament
As the success of any organiza
tion is gauged by the service it ren
ders, so the luncheon club is writing
into its history another chapter of
service that justifies its existence
and will cause it to prosper accord
ingly. Bringing the tournament
here was made possible only by the
club's action. Probably no individ
ual in the city will receive much di
rect mercenary benefit by staging
of the tournament Advertising
benefit to all will be considerable.
Such recognition helps mark the
town as live and progressive, where
if nothing be done to add to its life.
it is soon to be counted as a dead
one and to be avoided. Any busi
ness having a justified existence in
the city owes a moral obligation.
Every time the town is benefitted,
every business in it is benefitted In
asmuch as its opportunity for new
business is enlarged. Those which
do nothing toward making this en
largement of opportunity possible
are leeches on the energies and
abilities of others.
We predict success for the tour
nament under the sponsorship of
the luncheon club.
IT'S GREAT SPORT.
TO THOSE who suffer from re-
pressed emotions, have you tried
skiing?
Due to the unusually long and in
terrupted spell of winter experienc
ed in Heppner the last few weeks,
winter sports have come into their
own. Among these, skiing and to
bogganing hold special prominence.
Much can be said in their favor.
Skiing is recommended, above all
others, for its leveling propensity
tor wnether it be an inferiority or
superiority complex from which he
is suffering, it will land the begin
ner ungracefully in the snow.
It is this departure from grace,
as much as the exhileration pro
duced by traveling at a high rate of
speed through the cold, crisp air,
that makes skiing one of the finest
of sports. Its popularity is attest
ed by the many people to be seen
on the hill at the east side of town
whenever a cessation of routine de
mands affords the opportunity.
Needed exercise for those whose
toil keeps them housed up much of
the time is gained by ascending the
hill. This work becomes play, how
ever, by anticipation of the thrill to
be had when gliding gracefully and
speedily to the bottom again.
Roy Glasscock dug out of the
snow and came to town Monday.
Everything will be lovely, if the
snow will turn to moisture and the
moisture to crops, and the crops to
money and the money to a good
time, all of which will be whoopee
for 1929. Roy had a rainbow
around his shoulder, and there was

REV. BAMTTEL D. FXICE, D. S,
A suggestion of the universality
of prayer is found in the "Pater
Noster" Church, on the summit of
the Mount of Olives. In the vesti
bule are 32 large tablets bearing the
Lord's Prayer in as many different
languages. Then three more such
translations are close at hand in
this building. The most unlettered
people has Its prayer forms, in
which they seek to placate an in
jured deity. Prayer, however, is
much more than an effort to avoid
consequences for wrongs that have
been committed. In this means of
grace the Christian approaches the
Throne for spiritual fellowship and
to express thanksgiving, before any
requests are made for personal ben
efits or favors. In this manner of
address we talk things over with
our personal God and indicate our
confidence in Him.
Scripture portions for special
study, In addition to those Indicated
above, are Genesis 18:23-33; Exodus
32:31, 32; Nehcmiah 1:4-11; Daniel
6:10; John 17:1-26; Thessalonlans
6:17. One of the most helpful books
on the subject U "With Christ in
the School of Prayer," by Andrew
Murray.
Intercessory prayer is especially

EDUCATION AND PROHIBITION
PRESIDENT-ELECT HOOVER
is going to try to make the coun
try dryer. His proposed plan is said
in part to be based on the education
of the public. A splendid Idea. It
seems to us one of the best ways
to enfoce prohibition.
It was this method, that of edu
catnig the public as to the evils and
ba deflects of alcoholic stimulants,
that was making America the most
sober country In the world before
the adoption of the prohibitory
laws.
It is this method, intelligently ap
plied, that will save the existing
laws. That will diminish the disre
spect for law that has, according to
many, grown out of the prohibitory
measures.
Prohbiition based on Individual
choice is true prohibition. Personal
liberty is a precious possession. It
is worth while to teach the true
facts of the case against alcoholic
excess in order to make persons
accept the idea of prohibition of
their own free will, eliminating the
atmosphere of compulsory regula
tion of personal habits.

Senator Borah, good American,
.fears that if we build cruisers with

tory to Britain we shall have a
"shipbuilding race with England."
If necessary, why not have it?
But Britain couldn't afford it and
knows well that we shall never at
tack Britain unless we are first at
tacked.
The British, while they could
dominated the seas, and were proud
of it Whoever didn't like it could
lump it That condition existed
from the day when Nelson at Tra
falgar wiped out Napoleon s
chances of British conquest up to
1924.
It is Uncle Sam's turn now.
Airplanes, submarines, fast cruis
ers, will answer any question from
any other nation, and this country
should have the answer ready.
Grow your own fur coats at
home. Mr. Vernon Bailey of the
Agricultural Department tells you
that muskrats, supposed to need
big swamps, can be raised like rab
bits or guinea pigs, in small pens.
They need only enough water to
keep comfortably wet and cool in
summer. This will interest Cali
fornia rabbit raisers, among others.
The world of science, including
Bertrand Russell, called the great
est living mathematician, is inter
ested in Professor Einstein's an
nouncement that electro-magnetism
and gravity are practically the
same. This discovery, says the
learned Dr. Pupin of Columbia Un
iversity, places Einstein beside Gal
ileo and Newton.
All Interested In physics await a
demonstration that there is only
one kind of force in the universe
that light, heat motion, electro-
magnetism, gravity are all the
same. iUnstem seems to confirm
part of Herbert Spencer's definition
of evolution which describes the
retained emotion" as undergoing
a transformation from an indenn
ite, incoherent homogeniety to t
in the nephew is saved, which is the
purport of Abraham's prayer. Mo
ses' prayer involves a nation. Sin
ning Israel Is saved, though Jeho
vah had said that of Moses he would
make a greater people. The decree
of a king could not stop David from
keeping his daily prayer tryst with
God. Even so we are to establish
both time and place for daily pray
er, and permit nothing to interfere.
The disciples asked Jesus to teach
them how to pray and the model
called the Lord s Prayer Is the an
swer. While we are to follow the
general content the Christian world
has made blessed use of the actual
words. We must use this as a pray
er, however, rather than as any
form of recitation.
The approach is by a formal rec
ognition of Deity and an ascription
concerning Him. It Is in order to
confess our sins before we seek fa
vors from one who has been wrong
ed by our acts. Note most carefully
that Jesus indicated that the way in
which we forgive our debtors is the
standard by which we seek pardon
from our heavenly Father. Here is
a test Indeed. Being at peace with
God we begin to seek his blessings.
We want His Kingdom to be estab
lished here on earth. This is the
socialized Gospel in action. His will
is to be done by us, even as the an
gels and redeemed souls absolutely
follow His desire in Heaven.
The publican reveals the simple,
direct attitude and petition that the
Father accepts. His only outcry was
'God be merciful to me a sinner."
This prayer was answered and the
man returned joyously to his home.

that the big Woolworth concern

proves the wisdom of Woolworth's

Mrs. Pankhurst thought women
should vote. Since they created the
men for wars, they should have
something to say about war.
Everybody agrees with Mrs.
Pankhurst now, and Mr. Baldwin,
who opposed her, will unveil her

When she was alive, demanding
justice for women, they put her
in jail. She starved herself until
she was released, justice not liking
the idea of disposing of her corpse,
and that is what it would have had
to do.
Released from prison, she re
newed her fight, chained herself to
the iron railings before the Com
mons, was jailed again, and again
entered self-imposed starvation.
Her courage won. British women
vote in the House of Commons and
help to make laws. Mrs. Pankhurst
lies in her grave, her death has
tened by hardship; and those that
hounded her now honor her.
She is satisfied.
