HEPPNER GAZETTE TIMES, HEPPNER, OREGON, THURSDAY, NOV. 8, 1928. PAGE FIVE Ste Will Never forget By Arthur Brisbane Only $5,000 to the Lord. Our Descendants. Lincoln's Short Letter. "Only a Cold." Mrs. E. S. Dodge dies leaving one million. Nineteen thousand dollars go to friends, $5,000 to a Presbyte rian church, the balance to relatives. Five thousand dollars out of $1,000, 000 given to the Lord seems small. In old days, when heaven and hell were taken more literally, it would have been thought wise to give $900, 000 of the $1,000,000 to religion and make sure of salvation. But in this agnostic day many feel that the Lord does not need money, especially as He could create any amount of it by an easy mira cle, whereas relatives and educa tional institutions DO need money, and can't perform miracles. That a son Is born to Princess Mi chael Cantacuzene In Chicago means little to the average, but a great deal to a few old men of the Grand Army, who know that Prin cess Cantacuzene is General Grant's granddaughter. The only Immortality of which we are certain, apart from the certain ty of religious faith, Is the immor tality of our descendants. Each may live for thousands of years in his descendants. You that read this are descended from men that were alive on earth 500,000 years ago. What our descendants will be we cannot guess. General Grant, "before opportun ity came and people wondered why ho didn't keep "sober," little thought that he would be the great-grandfather of a son of a Russian prince. Descendants of Astors, Vander bllts and Rockefellers will beg their bread a thousand years hence If begging still prevails. Descendants of Jhenghls, Timur and Attila are among Mongolian la borers now scattered through Asia. The Triennial Protestant Episco pal convention In Washington Is urgently requested to recognize faith cures. In such cures the pa tient helps himself by believing that someone else will help him. Faith can do many things. A man was bound to a chair, his feet put In hot water and told that his feet would be cut by a razor. The back of a razor was drawn across the soles of his feet. Not a drop of blood was shed, but he died. What can kill can cure. Some doctors wisely believe that faith healing should be used to help nervous patients. On June 12, 1848, Abraham Lin. coin wrote to William H. Herndon a short letter, telling what he thought about Zachary Taylor's prospect of election. The letter was sold yesterday for .$3,000. ' 'TRIB Lincoln, thirty-seven years old, when he wrote that letter, would have been amazed had he known what would happen to It. At that time he would have been glad to get the Job In the Interior Department for which he applied unsuccessfully. Fortunately he did n't get It, for It might have taken him out of politics. Johns Hopkins, in 125 families, rich and poor, will Investigate ori gins, causes and frequency of colds. What Is foolishly described as "only a cold," Is the most harmful of diseases, causing a loss of hun dreds of millions a year in wages. And what is worse, it weakens the system, exposing it to attack from diseases that destroy life pneu monia, diphtheria, heart disease and a dozen others. INFLUENZA. (From Oregon State Board of Health.) Report has it that influenza is again making its appearance in the southern and eastern part of this country and is spreading In thai di rection. While common colds un doubtedly are due to germs, never theless, influenza as an epidemic disease must be considered as a separate infection. It Is a more serious illness than the common cold. Influenza is an acute Infectious disease accompanied by more or less fever. It spreads with extra ordinary rapidity from town to town and usually attacks a larger part of the population. It is not apparent at this time that Oregon will suffer with a very extensive epidemic. The public should, however, take care of them selves on the first appearance of a cold. Go to bed until you are cured. The greatest danger Is the liability of contracting pneumonia following an attack of influenza or a bad cold. It is a good rule to conserve your energy. You are using more ener gy now than you do in warm weath er. The increased heat production demands more work of the kidneys, heart and lungs. This is why you tire more easily at this season of the year. Protect yourself against Infiuneza and pneumonia by taking the fol lowing precautions: Take plenty of rest and increase the hours of sleep. Regulate your diet; eat more veg etables, salads, whole wheat bread: drink more milk and water; eat leas meat Keep feet dry and wear warm clothes. " Keep fingers out of mouth and wash hands before eating. Avoid getting chilled. During an epidemic every one should avoid crowded Ill-ventilated places. All cases of influenza should stay at home and remain in isolation. All discharges should be disinfected and all articles contaminated with discharges should be boiled or de stroyed by burning. The hands should be frequently washed espec ially after they have come in con tact with the nose and mouth. Avoid crowds. If simple methods of prevention were practiced by ev eryone, the wide-spread epidemics of this disease would not occur. The number of persons In a community who know how to protect them selves and others from infection is lamentably small. The most effect ive way to promote the doctrine of disease prevention is through gen eral education of the public. schools, Melvln F. Johnston, at the association's headquarters here, by J. W. Crabtree, secretary. This re port of one hundred percent enroll ment represents eight teachers. In a letter congratulating Superinten dent Johnston, Mr. Crabtree says: LEX TEACHERS ENROLL.
