Territorial Government
Essay Contest Subject
The Oregon Historical Society has
selected "The Territorial Govern
ment of Oregon" as the subject for
the 1929 C. C. Beekman History
Prizes and Medals. The prizes are
four In number, viz., fist, sixty dol
lars; second, fifty dollars; third, for
ty dollars; and fourth, thirty dol
lars; and will be awarded for the
best four original essays on the
above named subject written and
submitted by pirls or boys over fif
teen years of age antf under eigh
teen years of age, attending nay
public or private school, academy,
seminary, college, university, or
other eductaional institution within
the State of Oregon. Each of the
four prize winners will also receive
a handsome bronze medal.
The conditions governing the com
petition are as follows:
(1) The essay submitted in com
petition must not exceed two thou
sand words in length.
(2) The essay may be in hand
writing or in typewritten form, pre
ferably upon paper of commercial
letter size, either ruled or unruled,
the several sheets being numbered
consecutively and written on one
side only, with blank space of about
one and one-quarter inches at top
and left-hand margins.
(3) The essay shall be accompan
ied by a separate sheet containing
the name and post office address of
the writer, the date of his or her
birth, and the name of the school
attended.
(4) There shall also be delivered
with the essay a certificate signed
by a teacher or instructor of the
educational institution attended,
stating that the writer of the essay
is a pupil or student attending the
same.
(5) In order to be considered in
competition the essay must be de
livered, by mail or in person, to

not later than March 16, 1929.
(6) All essays submitted in com
petition will be numbered and sub
mitted, without the names of the
writers or other identifying marks,
to three judges selected by the un
dersigned committee.
(7) All competitive essays will be
judged according to their general
merit and excellence; but the judges
will also take into consideration, In
passing thereon, neatness of manu
script, acucrate orthography, cor
rect grammar and composition, and
purity and clarity of diction.
The Oregon State Library in Sa
lem has a reading list or bibliog
raphy upon the above named sub
ject which will be sent to any Ore
gon student on request Books per
taining to the subject are obtain
able in most Oregon public libraries.
Oregon has a system of local librar
ies, supplemented in many cases by
county library systems, and in all
cases by the Oregon State Library.
Students desiring such books should
apply first to the local library which
if not having the books, should se
cure them from the county and
state libraries. If the local lblrary
cannot give this service, which is
usual, or if there is no local library,
the student should write directly to
the Oregon State Library at Salem,
which makes loans of books free of
charge, except 'postage, to all citi
zens of Oregon. In writing to the
Oregon State Library students
should state the information desired
and not merely confine requests to
some particular book or books
sought thereby enabling the State
Library to substitute other material
In case any book requested is not
available.

home from Zillah, Wash., where
they have been picking apples.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bleakman
have moved to town for the winter.
AUXILIARY GIVING CHEST.

chest that is being filled by dona
tions from Its members. This chest
will be on display at the window of
Gilliam & Bisbee hardware store
for a time. It will contain many
beautiful and attractive articles
that the members of the Auxiliary
have been busy for some time work
ing on.
Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Thomson de
parted for California on Sunday, be
ing accompanied by Mrs. Thomson's
mother, Mrs. Katherine Farnswoth,
who will spend the winter with her
daughter, Mrs. W. L. Dinsmore at
Menlo Park. After a short visit
taking in some of the California
cities, Mr. and Mrs. Thomson will
return home.
J. W. Beymer, president of Far
mers & Stockgrowers National bank
was a visitor here from his home at
Monument over Saturday.
Mrs. Belle Bennehoff, mother of
Miss Leotia Bennehoff of the Hepp
ner schools, accompanied by Mr.
and Mrs. Tracy Matthews, were vis
itors here over the week end from
Baker county. Mrs. Matthews is a
sister of Miss Bennehoff, and she
and her husband were on their way
to Arizona.
While he si taking his vacation,
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wells are
spending a few days this week at
Pendleton.
Shelly Baldwin, who was laid up
for a few days in the hospital, suf
fering from a severe cold, Is out
again and attending to business.
