The road crew has been busy dur
ing the past week moving the coun
ty road outfit from Jarman's to a
new camp on Rhea creeK, on me
Wright place at the mouth of Cas
on canyon. The county Is getting
ready to push the work on the
Eight Mile market road, and the
crew is at present grading up Jack
rabbit canyon. Some of the cabins
that were at the Jarmon camp were
placed on the big trailer belonging
to the county, and thus transferred
to the Rhea creek camp. Work on
the new market road will be pushed
this fall, with the ultimate object in
view of having the road in shape by
next harvest.
Dr. A. D. McMurdo and W. W.
Smead returned late Tuesday eve
ning from Mt Vernon, over in
Grant county, where they went a
few days ago to Join Roy Glass
cock in a deer hunt. They pro
ceeded to Bear valley and had good
luck, the doctor getting two bucks
and Mr. Smead one. The hunting
conditions were ideal on this trip.
Ted McMurdo accompanied his fa
ther on the trip.
Walter R. Frits, special agent of
Fire Association of Philadelphia,
was here Monday consulting with
the local agent of the company, F.
W. Turner. This company held in
surance to the amount of $22,600
on the school building at Monu
ment, which was badly damaged by
fire late In the summer. The pay
ment of tills Insurance enabled the
district to replace their equipment.
Charley Cox and Charley Vaughn
got In right after noon on Tuesday,
after a hunt of a week over in the
Uklah section. They bagged two
bucks apiece and feel pretty well
satisfied with their hunt During the
time they were out they made head
quarters at Wm. Allison's, uncle of
Mr. Vaughn.
R. L. Via, recently of Portland,
arrived in Heppner the end of the
week to take charge of the Patter
son Son drug company as mana
ger. Mr. Via, a registered druggist
of many years experience, is insti
tuting some new policies that he
believes will prove popular with the
public.
Henry Peterson was in town a
short time on Tuesday from the
ranch out in Eight Mile. It did
not rain as much out that way Sun
day night and Monday as it did
around Heppner, but Mr. Peterson
was hopeful that more would fol
low. G. L. Bennett was in the city from
Alpine Tuesday. Out his way the
farmers are still looking for rain,
and a number have not begun seed
ing. John Kilkenny and Hugh O'Rour
ke are Heppner sheepmen In Port
land this week.
I. R. Roblson, lone garageman,
was in the city for awhile Monday
on business.
Mr. and Mrs. Guy Huston and son
were Eight Mile people in the city
on Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hoskins have
about completed the new residence
on their Rhea creek property. They
own the place that was for so many
years the home of the late J. J. Ad-
kins, and now that the new house
Is up and the old one moved the ap
pearance of the place has been
much changed. The new house con
tains six rooms, has basement and
is quite modern In every way.
Mr. and Mrs. John Hlatt returned
the first of the week after an ab
sence of some ten days, during
which time they enjoyed a visit at
the home of Mr. Hiatt's parents in
Vancouver, Wash., and Mr. Hlatt
took in the sessions of the K. of P.
grand lodge at Salem as a delegate
from Doric lodge No. 20 of this city.
They also visited at Portland.
'Edward A. Lindeken, extensive
tractor farmer of the lone vicinity,
was smiling when in town Monday
because of the fine rain that had
just hit his district along with the
rest of the county. Most of his
seeding is done and he will finish
just as soon as the top of the
ground dries out a bit
Mrs. Fannie Rood returned to
her Portland home the end of the
week, after spending several days
here looking after business inter
ests. She was accompanied to the
city by John Hayes, who had been
visiting at the home of his son, Joe
Hayes, on Big Butter creek.
Cecil Lieuallen and wife have
been in the city for several days
this week. Mr. Lieuallen recently
purchased the Ed Kellogg place on
Rhea creek, and we understand h
will stock it with milk cows, and
it will be run by his father, Frank
Leiuallen, now of Hood River.
The new farm home of Mr. and
Mrs. Glen Jones on the Heppner
Flat place, is rapidly nearing com
pletion. This dwlling is of hollow
tile' construction, has full basement
and is in every way modern and
presents quite an Imposing appear
ance from the highway.
Services were conducted at the
Catholic church in this city on Sun
day by Bishop McGrath of Baker,
In the absence of the pastor, Rev.
Thomas J. Brady, who was ill.
Frank Hale of Hamilton, who re
cently underwent a serious opera
tion at Heppner hospital, was suf
ficiently recovered to return home
the first of the week.
L. Van Marter, manager of the
Peoples Hradware company was ex
pected home yesterday from a busi
ness trip to Portland.
C. D. Robinson of Lone Rock,
stockman of that section of Gilliam
county, was a visitor at Heppner
Tuesday.
W. A. Price, leading Boardman
resident and city recorder of that
place, was here on business Mon
day. ,
Frank Young, farmer of the low
er Gooseberry section, was attend
ing to business in Heppner on Tues
Cecil Sargent and family of lone
were visitors here on Tuesday.
While Heppner enjoyed a good rain
the first of the week, Mr. Sargent
states that it was very light in the
lone country.
Edward Rlctmann and family
were visitors in this city on Tues
day from their home north of lone.
