PAGE SIX HEPPNER GAZETTE TIMES, HEPPNER, OREGON, THURSDAY, SEPT. 6, 1928. Oregon State Library Rated High in Report The State Library at Salem is highly commended in a report on American library methods made by British investigators in 1927, and now published by the Carnegie Uni ted Kingdom Trust in Edinburgh, Scotland. The report which is widely circulated in England and America says of the Library: "The Oregon State Library (at Salem) is extremely interesting, and has unique features: the librarian is not afraid of experiment The li brary's activities comprise four main services, viz, a mail order lending library for communities without library provision: a branch system of travelling libraries in ru ral communities: a supplementary service to all public libraries and county libraries in the State: the selection and purchase of books for the school libraries In the State. "During the last biennium, the mail order department received nearly 34,000 requests from individ ual borrowers, and supplied over 125,000 volumes. The fact that the borrowers are willing to pay post age on books both ways speaks for the value of the service to them. The travelling library department sent out nearly 76,000 volumes to 700 communities without libraries, and augmented the stock of 69 pub lic libraries. 2321 school districts were served by book loans, book lists, and by the buying and delivery of school library books. "A notable feature of the service is its publicity work: the bulletins and book lists of Important public libraries are procured in bulk and issued to centres and individual students. I noted also a bold and original method of supplying infor mation by sending out sections of large and expensive reference works and encyclopedias. The section of a work is forwarded In an appro priately endorsed envelope. The scheme appears to work very well, and enables students and others far from libraries to have a reference service more equal to that enjoyed by a dweller in a city. The State Librarian, in spite of her many ac tivities, gives very individual and personal supervision to the fulfil ment of requests which are in a large measure for "a book about" a subject A strong personal in terest, combined with expert know ledge, gives a very valuable service to those who are far removed from the amenities available in cities, and Oregon is fortunate in possessing a service of outstanding merit" NOTICE OF EQUALIZATION MEETING. Now, in the name of invalids and luxurious folk, a novel tray has been designed to fit over the knees, with its sides resting solidly on the mattress. The table top is broad and firm, and there are side pockets to hold the morning paper and per sonal mail. You may have your choice of pink, blue, mauve, or pale green or ivory in these trays and usually there Is a delicate flower motif by way of additional decoration.
