Chas. AUinger was. here on Tues
day from lone. He states that after
a trip pretty well over the wheat
belt of the county, he Is convinced
that the crops will be short, unless
rain comes soon. The cool weather
has had a beneficial effect, but rain
is sorely needed to cause the wheat
to fill, and spring wheat must have
rain it it makes anything. In the
lone district, especially that part
of the wheat belt lying north of
that city, the grain is now heading
rapidly and the grain is forming In
the head just the critical time, arid
a rain coming now would make a
bumper crop. South of that place
thej conditions are not quite so
promising,
C. J. Anderson made Heppner a
visit on Monday, looking after mat
ters of business. Mr. Anderson,
who farms in the lower Gooseberry
section, was not feeling any too
sanguine over the crop outlook,
stating that he was a little afraid
that the necessary rain was being
delayed too long. Fall grain was
still looking pretty good, but rain
is needed to develop It . and this
must come soon. Spring grain will
make a good crop should some
rains hit this section right away.
L. Van Marter, G. A. Bleakman
and son Roe and Wm. Isom consti
tuted a party of Heppner fishermen
who returned Saturday night after
having spent a day of successful
angling on Crooked river. They se
cured their limit of fish. Another
party consisting of Dr. Balrd, Leon
ard Schwarz, Earl Hallock, Chas.
Swindig and others made the trip
on Saturday afternoon to Crooked
river, but they returned somewhat
disappointed as the fish failed to
bite for them, so the report goes.
Mrs. Ida Dutton motored up from
Portland the end of the week,
spending several days here. She
was accompanied home by Mrs. J.
J. Wightman who had been to Rose
burg to attend the meeting of the
Rebekah Assembly as a delegate
from San Souci lodge of this city.
Patrick E. Burke, district agent
for the National Life Insurance
company of Vermont, has located
permanently in Heppner, after a
trip over his territory. Mr. Burke,
who recently came here from Sa
lem, is a brother of Mrs. J. J. Nys
of this city.
Raymond Ferguson, Louis Fred
erlckson and Harold Hill composed
a party whp left Heppner early
Tuesday morning for East lake to
spend a day of fishing. They fully
expected to return home with their
full quota of the finny tribe.
Harry Huley, who for several
years practiced his trade of barter
ing at Heppner, dropped In for a
visit the first of the week. Just
now Mr. Huley is taking a little
vacation, having recently disposed
of a ehop In Dufur.
Mrs. T. G. Boggs, who has been
conducting the photograph studio
here since early last fall, departed
with her children for Bingen, Wn,
where they joined Mr. Boggs and
will make their home in the future.
Miss Gladys Benge was a visitor
at the home of her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Eph Eskelson, over the
week-end. She returned on Sunday
afternoon to Walla Walla where she
is a student at Whitman college.
Ray McDufTee arrived -in he city
the first of the week for a visit at
the home of his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Geo. McDuffee. Ray had a
teaching position in the Bandon
high school the past year.
Mr. and Mrs. Emery Gentry Bpent
several days in the city from their
home at Pendleton this week. Mr.
Gentry was here In the interests
of his auto agency at Pendleton, and
took a trip to Condon.
Henry Clark was here on Tues
day from lone, bringing their little
daughter to the hospital for an op
eration, the removal of tonsils and
adenoids. The little girl is rapidly
recovering.
Mr. and 'Mrs. Milton W. Bower,
Miss Tichnor of Alpine and Mrs.
L. O. Nelll of Pine City, who attend
ed the Eastern Oregon convention
of the Christian church at Baker
last week, returned home on Fri
day. The party drove to Baker in
the Nelll car and returned over the
John Day highway. This is a rath
er round-about way to get back
from Baker and requires traveling
many extra miles, but no one re
grets the extra time and mileage
as it is a wonderful trip. These
people report a very excellent meet
ing of the churches in the E, O
convention. . , ,.
Dr. A. H. Johnston and D. A. Wil
son arrived home Friday evening
from East lake, where they spent a
day or so angling for the ,!g fish.
They got the fish, antf incidentally
took on a goodly portion of sun
burn. The G. T. force are under ob
ligations to these gentlemen for a
fine mess of mountain trout.
Mrs. E. F. Day came up from
Portland on Thursday last for a
visit with her sisters, Mrs. Melissa
Marlatt and Mrs. Ellen Buseick, in
this city. Mrs. Day and Mrs. Buse
ick, accompanied by Jon Conder,
motored to John Day on Sunday for
a visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Reld Buseick.
Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Huston mo
tored to Baker on Sunday, where
they have been spending the week
visiting with a sister of Mrs. Hus
ton, Mrs. Fuller and her daughter.
Mr. and Mrs. HuBton are expected
home today.
Dr. and Mrs. A. D. McMurdo and
children took in the air derby at
Wulla Walla Sunday and while
there Mr. and Mrs. McMurdo en
joyed a flight in the air.
Mr. and Mrs. John McCullough,
and Misses Odile and May Groshens
were here from Portland on Memor
ial Day, driving up from the city
on Tuesday.
Tom West, representing a life In
surance company, spent a couple of
days in Heppner from his home at
Portland the first of the week.
Henry Aiken arrived the first of
the week from Portland for a visit
at the home of his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. G. C. Aiken.
Mr. and Mrs. Dan Rice of Port
land enjoyed meeting old friends
hero while in the city over Memorial
Day.

Mr. and Mrs. Vawter Crawford,
Mrs. Frank S, Parker and Mrs. W.
J. Beymer returned Friday from
Baker where they spent three days
the past week in attendance upon
the Eastern Oregon convention of
the Churches of Christ They ra-
port a very interesting gathering
of church people in the Baker
county capital and splendid enter
tainment by the Baker folks. The
party returned home via Dooley
mountain and the John Day high
way and pronounce this one of the
finest trips any one can take over
the highway system of Oregon.
While returning from Baker the
past week, Heppner people enjoyed
a pleasant little visit with Mr. and
Mrs. Reid Buseick at John Day. Mr.
and Mrs. Buseick are nicely locat
ed in the metropolis of the John
Day valley, where Mr. Buseick Is
engaged in the mercantile business
and enjoying a good trade. These
young people are always very pleas
ed to have a call from Heppner
folks who may be passing that way.
Mrs. Elizabeth Keeney, accompan
panied by her sisters, Mrs. Otto
Metschan and Miss Juanlta Mat
lock, drove up from Portrland on
Tuesday and remained over until
Wednesday afternoon. The ladies
were entertained while at Heppner
by L. L. Matlock, their cousin.
Mrs. J. B. Cooley, accompanied
by Miss Maude Maxwell, drove over
from Pendleton Wesdnesday morn
ing and spent Memorial Day here.
The ladies were guests at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. V. Crawford, Mrs.
Cooley and Mrs. Crawford being

Mrs. M. Belle Thompson came up
from her Portland home the first of
the week and Is a guest at the Wil
low creek home of her son, Ralph
Thompson. Mrs. Thompson was
one of the very early pioneer set
tlers of the Heppner country.
Mr. and Mrs. Waldo Vincent came
over from Umapine on Tuesday to
attend the Memorial Day services
here on Wednesday. They were
guests at the home of Mrs. Mattie
Adkins, mother of Mrs. Vincent,
while in the city.
C. L. Sweek and family motored
to Eugene this week for a short
visit with relatives there.
