A number of Arlington ball fans

W. J. Wattenburger and wife of
Echo and Lon Wattenburger and
wife of Pine City were visitors here
for a short time on Wednesday
forenoon. W. J. says that the polit
ical pot in Umatilla county Is sim
mering quite lively, and there is
prospect of some tight races before
the final count on May 18.
Dr. D. J. McFaul, for 28 years a
practicing physician in Pendleton,
and for a year or so previous to
that time located at Heppner, died
on Friday at Pasadena, Calif. His
remains were brought to Pendleton
and funeral servcles were held
there on Tuesday.

Mr. and Mrs. J. G, Clouston of
Pendleton were visitors here the
first of the week. Returning home
on Monday evening, they were ac
companied by Mrs. 8. P. Devin, mo
ther of Mrs: Clouston, who will visit
for a time in Pendleton.
John Luther and family arrived
here the past week, and Mr. Luther
will be the line and service man in
this district for Pacific Power &
Light Co. Mr. Luther was former
ly In the construction department
of the company.
Algott Lundell and family of lone
spent Saturday afternoon and eve
ning In Heppner. Mr. Lundell is a
successful farmer of the lone sec
tion and looks for a fine crop there
again this season.
Mr. and Mis. R. E. Harbison of
Morgan visited Hoppner for a short
time on Tuesday. Mr. Harbison,
who was ill for so long in Portland,
is now well on the road to full re
covery. Frank Farnsworth came in Sat
urday from the C. H. Bartholomew
farm on Butter creek, where he has
been working for the past couple
of months.
W. O. Dix, of the firm of-Hlatt
& Dlx, has been laid up at home
for the past week, suffering from
his leg ailliction of long standing.
Miss Reita Neel departed for The
Dalles and Hood River on Friday,
where she will have a visit with
relatives and friends.

lost from the plant in the field.
Cutting grain hay not later than
the soft dough stage and alfalfa In
the one-tenth to one-half bloom
stage has been found good practice
by the experiment station.
Copper carbonate treatment for
smut which is standard on wheat
Is not efficient in preventing smut in
oats and barley. The liquid for
maldehyde treatment for these
grains is recommended by the Ore
gon experiment station. The cop
per carbonate dust will not pene
trate the hulls of oats and barley
sufficiently to kill the smut spores.
Even with good healthy cows sc-
cess is not assured, unless these
cows are properly fed. To be well
fed the dairy cow needs on abund
ance of feed, succulent feed, prop
erly balanced feed and palatable
feed, says the extension specialist
In dairying.
