A very prompt response was
made to an alarm turned in about
8 o'clock Saturday evening by the
local Are department, who were di
rected to the residence of J. O. Ha-
ger in the extreme eastern part of
town. When, they arrived on the
scene, however, the fire was about
extinguished by the use of garden
hose. It had started next to the flue
leading from the furnace in the
basement, between, the ceiling' and
the roof, and it was necsesary to cut
through to get at it But slight
damage is reported to the residence.
. Albert Williams came In on the
stage from Pendleton Monday, and
after a visit of a few days here,
will go to the ranch of Tom O'Brien
on Butter creek where he will have
a job working with the O'Brien
sheep for the spring and summer-

P. R. Brown of Brown Warehouse
company, was a business visitor In
Arlington on Friday. Mr. Brown

Mr. and Mrs. Jerm O'Connor left
for Pendleton on Monday after
noon, at which place they took the
train for Baker to attend the con
firmation ceremonies of Father
Kelly as the new bishop of Idaho.
Father Kelly was raised at The
Dalles, and Mrs. O'Connor was well
acquainted with him.

Wes Biannon was in town from

turned warmer and putting the

Mike Kenny states that lambing
at the Kenny ranch is progressing
well and a good percentage of In
crease is being made, with no ma
terial loss of either ewes or lambs.
His sheep have been on feed since
the 5th of Decmber, when they
needed it and having plenty of hay
cne sneep nave suffered none on
account of range conditions. Warm
er weather will soon provide good
range on the Kenny ranch. Mike
was a visitor in Heppner on Sat
urday.
Claude White brought In a con
signment of cream to the local
creamery yesterday. Mr. White,
who raises wheat on an extensive
scale, has also found it profitable
to kep some good cows which add
to the income during the year. He
has been able to do considerable
spring plowing on his farm border

Lawrence Palmer was in the city
Monday forenoon from his farm
near Lexington. He was ready to
begin spring work just as soon as
the weather conditions permitted,
and indications were just right Mon

Howard Anderson was up from
The Dalles over the week end. He
is representing Martin Johnson in
the work at school desk reflnishing,
Mr. Johnson having perfected a pro
cess whereby old desks can be made
to iook line new. Mr. Anderson ex
pects to get considerable work in
this section.

Egbert Young of Eight Mile was
attending to business here on Sat
urday, getting ready for the spring
work which will start soon. A
change in weather conditions, which
indicates that spring has at last
arrived, will see the Eight Mile far
mers busy in the fields shortly.
