The MasonB rank among the fore
most fraternal organizations repre
sented at Heppner, both In points of
numbers In their membership and
age.
The first A. F. & A. M. lodge was
organized in 1877. This Is the pre
sent local lodge No. 69, to whom the
charter was granted. The oldest
living member is Frank Uiniam, the
second Initiate of the lodge, who
was made a member in 1878.
The first master was Frank Mad
dock, of the Blue lodge, and the first
High Priest of the Royal Arch was
W. A. Kirk.
The above modern building, own
ed by them, was erected in 1914.
The memberships combined in the
Blue lodge and Royal Arch will
number approximately 350 today.
The Masons have ever been
among the builders of this section,
striving personally and collectively
to that end which would make our
section among the most advanced
and a better place In which to live.
HEPPNER ROD & GUN
CLUB IS ACTIVE BODY
At Heppner and vicinity the
sports are by no means neglected.
Heppner is headquarters for our
live wire rod and gun club which
invariably carries off its share of
the honors at various shoots. In
dividual members attend the shoots
in even far distant points and have
been known to bring home the ba
con. The club has its grounds adjoin
ing the Rodeo grounds at Heppner
where, starting in February of each
year, shoots are held every Sunday
until June. The club boasts of A3
members, mostly business and pro
fessional men of Heppner proper.
In competition with neighboring
clubs our club has made a fine
showing. Its personnel is ever in
terested in all matters pertaining
to outdoor sports and has done
much to encourage this feature of
Morrow county life. The club was
originally formed about four years
ago. Chas. H. Latourell, one of
the original organizers has been
a most active worker for the club
and its activities. He acts as pres
ident with L. L. Gilliam, secretary.

HIATT & DIX BUILD
FINE RETAIL STORE
One of the most successful retail
establishments of Heppner and of
the county for that matter is the
big, well stocked grocery and dry
goods establishment which Is con
ducted under the name of Hiatt &
Dix. Grocery lines are leading fea
tures, but a goodly line of dry
goods, notions, men's work cloth
ing and the like, are also carried.
They enjoy what is probably the
largest retail grocery trade of the
city, carrying large and varied
stocks of all manner of staple and
fancy groceries, fruits and veget
ables in season, meats, confection
ery, etc. A delivery service for the
convenience of the patrons is also
given.
This firm dates Its existence back
to but one short year ago when the
present partnership was formed. In
this short space of time they have
built up a wonderful trade.
In the first place both men had
long been connected with the busi
ness life of this section and were
well known as most capable busi
ness men. Hiatt formerly conduct
ed a like store in another location,
was also for some time the manager
of the Peoples Hardware company
and for ten years was connected
with the firm now known as the
Case Furniture company.
W. O. Dix came to this locality
with M. L. Case and engaged In the
furniture business with him under
the name of Case and Dix.
We find at Heppner no better ex
ample of business success to quote
in this edition than that of these
two, nor do we find greater boosters
for everything that has a tendency
to advance Morrow county's Interests.
Morrow county, Oregon, is the

TIRKEY STARTS GOLD RUSH.
There Is excitement at Red
Lodge, Mont Mrs. A. Pollard,
opening the gizzard of her Christ
mas turkey, raised in that neigh
borhood, found small gold nuggets.
Prospectors are seening desperately
the spot where the turkey pickid
up the nuggets. To the turkey those
nuggets were simply rough stones
swallowed to help grind corn. To
"proud man" those nuggets are the
beginning and the end of earthly
ambition, ninety-nine times out of a
hundred. Wise turkey, foolish nan.
