New Building Apprecia
ted. . "
WE BELIEVE the large num
ber of people who nearly
filled the new audtiorium at the
school play Tuesday evening, will
agree with us when we say the
new building is a credit to the
community, a plant that will stim
ulate forensic and athletic devel
opment of the pupils of the school
and add much to the public recep
tion of school entertainments for
years to come. Some people pres
ent Tuesday evening may have
been there simply out of curios-1
iry to see what the new building!
was like. A great numbr went
away convinced that no school en
tertainment was ever presented in
more pleasing surroundings where
so large an audience could com
fortably see and hear all that was
presented, in Hepper.
One use of the new building
has been fittingly revealed. Many
other uses will be revealed as the
crowded program for the structure
progresses during the remainder
of the year. A new life is seen in
the student bodies of the school,
aroused by the opportunities for
doing things that the new building
affords. This is being reflected
more and more as a fuller appre
ciation generally is had. Basket
ball will regain its lost status as a
leading sport of the town as the
players take a new interest,
aroused by the beter facilities;
make better teams, and conse
quently draw larger crowds who, in
turn, will find such convenience in
witnessing games that soon all the
drawbacks to the advancement of
the sport will have been over
come. A source for the working off of
pent-up, unexpended, energy of
, the youngsters in a proper man
ner is also provided through the
facilities of gymnastic training,
that will do away with many of
the tendencies toward vandalism
and other cussedness for which
youngsters are many times un
wontedly blamed. Heppner has
needed such a building for a long
time. It is but one of many step
ping stones necessary to progress,
and its dividends will be many
fold.
Christmas.
IF YOU are one of those who
think this "materialistic" age
is tottering to a fall, be glad for
Christmas. This is the day when
the years roll back, and all the
world is young.
Let Dad get his Christmas thrill
by showing the children just how
the new toys work. Let Mother
get her thrill when the family
pitches in and devours the feast
under which the table groans.
And the children well, they
know how to enjoy Christmas
without any prodding. Steal a
page from childhood's book, and
be glad for Christmas.
Magically, from aging shoul
ders, you'll find the burdens and
cares of this business of making
a living will drop away. Tomor
row, true enough, they may return
but who looks to tomorrow
when Christmas is here.
Be glad for Christmas .
Helping Retailers.
CONGRESS has been asked to
authorize a survey of retail
merchandising under the direc
tion of the Department of Com
merce. There is need for such a
survey since, for the most part,
whatever information is now avail
able to help retailers solve their
problems has been gathered by
private agencies with limited re
sources. Estimates of the total volume
of the retail business run from
$35,000,000,000 to $40,000,000,
000 annually, or about half the
national income. Among small
retailers the rate of business mor
tality is far greater than it should
be, so anything that will help
them is worthy of consideration.
One thing such survey should
most certainly include is reliable
and complete data on the part ad
vertising plays in the distribution
problem. Figures gathered in a
number of cities show that a start'

THE GROWTH OF PEACE.
rpHE peace idea is gradually growing. Peace will never be
secured by any artificial means until there js sufficient senti
ment behind it. That sentiment must grow. It cannot be man
ufacture Of course every intelligent effort to promote peace helps
along the growth and should be encouraged, but it should be
remembered that universal peace is not upon a solid foundation
except as based upon the will of all the people everywherte.
Lillian Gish, the movie actress, said the other day : "I be
lieve the screen will bring all men to a common conception of
one God and to a universal sense of international relation and
duty." '
One of the great factors in the growth of peace is the movie.
It speaks not in words suitable for one people and not another,
but by pictures which are understandable by all.
An Italian paper recently protested against the influence of
American Hollywood screens. This is like protesting against
the procession of the equinoxes.
I have seen films all through Europe and most of the Ameri
can ones. Europeans are fond of American films, for the
simplest reason in the world. They are better than the European
and cheaper. , "
Against these two arguments it is useless to object.
American films are steadily spreading the democratic ideas
of freedom and equality all over the world. Old notions of vest
ed privilege, old institutions founded upon tradition must give
way.
Along with the film come other things that are universal and
international, that know no nations and do not understand Ihe
language of "patriotism" art, literature and commerce. In the
matter of art is makes no difference where one comes from nor
who was one's father. It is the same way with commerce, if it
is profitable to trade with the people of a country, and no ideas
of nationality can prevent that occurrence.
In proportion as these universal ideas, commerce, the movies,
art, grow and spread, to that degree must provincialism and na
tionalism give way and a suitable basis be formed upon which
to erect the structure of universal peace.
ling number of firms failing in
those cHies were non-advertisers.
If Congress authorizes the survey
and Congress should the De
partment of Commerce in gather
ing the data should seek authori
tative information showing how
advertising affects the rate of bus
iness mortality among small re
tailers. Another man has been shot in
Mexico because of his political
views, which happened to be op
posed to those of the group in
power, but since only one man
was put to death, it seems likely
they were only taking a straw vote
this time.
