M. L. Case, new owner of the Fair
building, has greatly pleased his ten
ants, the employees of the United
States postofflce, by the improvements
made in their part of the building
this week. Swinging doors at the
front entrance, and another set of
doors a few feet inside, forming an
alcove leading into the main lobby
will be the means of shutting out the
cold air and making it much easier
to keep the lobby and working quar
ters in the postofflce comfortable.
A new floor was also laid in the lobby
and double doors placed at the back
entrance to the office department.
Mrs. Richard Wells met with some
trouble while on her way to Pendle
ton Friday afternoon. Reaching the
summit of Franklin hill, Mrs. Wells
ran into a heavy fog which made it
impossible for her to see any dis
tance. The car skidded and went off
the grade into the ditch. No serious
damage resulted to the machine as it
turned straight off the grade and was
stopped by boulders, but it took the
pleasure out of the. anticipated visit
to Pendleton and Mrs. Wells returned
to Heppner on the Btage. Walter La

2 above. Numerous water pipes were
frozen and the plumbers have been

milder weather came on Sunday and
a little snow comes along most every
day, reminding the residents of the
Heppner country that winter is real
ly approaching. It looks like a white
Christmas now.
Announcements have been received
by friends in Heppner of the coming
marriage of Herman H. Hill, son of
Mr. and Mrs. W. 0. Hill of Lexington,
to Miss Blanch Lillian Taylor, daugh
ter of Mrs. Martha L. Taylor of Port
land. The wedding will be an event
of Saturday, December 24th, and will
take place at Rose City Presbyterian
church.
Miss Edna Vaughn and Miss Eva
Hiatt went to Arlington on Friday
and were guests at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Fred Tash over Friday night.
The purpose of their visit was to -attend
the senior class play of the Ar
lington high school, given on Friday
evening, in which Miss Zada Tash
had a prominent part.
The Willing Workers of the Chris
tian church held their bazaar on Fri
day, and regardless of the very in
clement weather, it proved a success,
and the ladies realized about $150 for
their efforts. Some articles of fancy
work remain to be disposed of, but
these will be sold and the money
turned in later.
Guy Shaw, who is with the county
bridge crew, was here from Lexing-
ton on Tuesday. He reports that all
the bridge work on tHe Lexington
Jarmon market road is completed and
the grading is about finished. The
coming season will see this road all
surfaced.
Mr. and Mrs. Alex Green were vis
itors in Portland over the week end,
going to see their little daughter
Ruth who is a patient in the Shrine
hospital in the ctiy. The little girl
is getting along quite well and will in
time fully recover the use of her leg.
Arnold Pieper states that his grain
is all up just right and that the cover
ing of snow is what is needed to
protect it from any freezing weather.
Mr. Pieper was in town Tuesday and
reports about the same fall of snow
in his section as around Heppner.

M. N. Kirk is in the city this week
from his Clarks canyon ranch, serv
ing on the jury. He reports some
snow In his dsitiict which will prove
to be protection to the growing wheat.
Frank A. McMenamin, Portland at
torney, arrived at Heppner on Sun
day to be present at the opening of
Circuit court here on Monday, having
business before that body.
The ladies of the Episcopal church
will give a tea on Thursday, Dec. 29,
from 3 to 7 o'clock. Tea, sandwiches
and cake at 25c. At Parish House. 40

street from Methodist church. All

x The ladies of the Episcopal church
report that their bazaar held at the
Parish house was a financial success,
the net returns being $211.
Wm. French is the new shoe repair
man at Gonty's shoe store. He comes
from Klamath Falls and expects his
family to arrive shortly.
Mrs. Emma Whetstone, who has
been quite ill at her home in this
city for the past several weeks, is
now convalescing. '

Man Now at Newberg
Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Howard, for
forty years residents of Morrow
county, have taken apartments in
Newberg for the winter, according to
word received by this paper, and Mr.
Howard has become affiliated with
the firm of W. E. White & Co., real
tors, for many years one of the lead
ing real estate firms of Yamhill
county, located at Newberg. Mr.
Howard reports business as moving
very satisfactorily in Western Ore
gon for this time of year. Mr. and
Mrs. Howard went to Newberg from
Hood River, where they had been
residing for the past few years, af
ter disposing of their holdings at
lone.
Word also was received from James
A. Howard, former resident of lone,
and wife, announce the birth of a
son, James Arthur, Jr., at McMinn
ville on December 10. Mr, Howard,
who attended high school at lone, is
now head of the social science de
partment in the union high school at
West Linn, Oregon.
