HEPPNER GAZETTE TIMES, HEPPNER, OREGON, THURSDAY, OCT. 6, 1927. PAGE THREE nil Corvallis, Ore., Oct. 8, GRAIN. No unusual changes marked last week's grain markets except corn continued to go lower. Cash wheat prices held steady on good domestic demand and Pacific Coast export wheat was slightly firmer. Ireraiums for good, high protein and soft mill ing wheats were paid. The St. Louis market advanced 8 cents on No. 2 Soft Red Winter bringing quotations to $1.49 at the close of the week. It is estimated that 100,000,000 bushels of wheat and rye in Europe will be unfit for milling and rains in Canada and the United States have done dam age to Borne unthreshed wheat. Good rains in Australia and Argentine have improved new crop prospects. Barley was firm on the Pacific Coast and slightly higher in the east where there is a larger export movement. The oats market was .dull on the Coast but tended upward in the cen tral west reflecting a light supply of good quality grain. HAY. Although pastures are short causing better demand for hay, the general market situation is weak es pecially for low quality hay. A down ward tendency has been noted in Yak ima and Sacramento valleys where offering exceeds demand. Middle western markets, however, were slightly firmer on extra leafy, preen alfalfa suitable for milling and for dairy cattle. No. 1 alfalfa was quot ed September 23 at Kansas City $18. 60; Memphis $24.00; San Francisco, $21.00. PRUNES. Unofficial estimates in dicate considerable reduction in the dried prune production on the Pa cific Coast compared to earlier fore casts'. Old stocks are reported great ly reduced. The French crop is ex pected to about equal that of 1928 but the Yugoslavia production is not expected to exceed half of last year. The situation is improved for those who hold stocks of good fruit, espec ially of large sizes. APPLES. Some improvement in the English market compared to the de moralized situation which has pre vailed for several weeks owing to an over supply of tome grown fruit was noted in recent auctions. WOOL. Further slight advances were noted in medium grade domestic wool last week. , LIVESTOCK. Wartime prices for fed steers were registered last week in Chicago when some extra good stuff brought $16.66 and the general run of fed stuff went around $13.00. All cattle were helped by the strong market for tops but the situation is not favorable to heavy increases in supplies of poorly finished stock in killer markets although feeders and stockers aro in good demand. Com bined cattle receipts at 68 markets this year to date are about one-half million head less than a year ago. Rains slowed up movement of lambs but supplies were large enough to cause some weakening in prices. Hogs were up and down but not much changed. OLD COLLARS TABOO. University of Oregon, Eugene, Oct. 6. The stiff "stand-up" collars of the R. O. T. C. coats, which have choked the perspiring throats of young ca dets, and unbuttoned, have cast a general air of disrepute on the mili tary department, have been abolished and replaced with roll collars, similar to those on civilian coats, according to Col. W. S. Sinclair, head of the Oregon R. O. T. C. Shiny gilt but tons have also replaced the bronze ones of former years, he said. Cap tain Clarence H. Bragg, who received his commission at Camp Benning, Georgia, has been appointtd professor of military science. The war depart ment has increased the allowance for men taking the basic military course from 500 to 650. HALLOWE'EN TIME COMING. Certified Fortyfold seed wheat seems to be quite scarce this fall, ac cording to dealers trying to supply sufficient quantities of the grain. Most of the wheat has come from Morrow county near Heppner, but the supply here is extremely limited. Cars have been shipped by the grain officials at Heppner to La Grande and many other sections outside the im mediately surrounding counties. Hy brid 128 is also in demand as well as some good certified Federation. A good quality of seed wheat is the main desire of many wheat farmers this year. Alpine News Items.
