ONTARIO Argus turned up a
telling argument against the
$3 flat auto license fee system pro
posed by initiative petition.
"To say nothing," quoting the
Argus, "about the increased pleas
ures of riding and driving on Ore
gon roads compared with those of
Idaho; disregarding the saving up
on the mechanical portions of the
car and its body; but considering
the saving in tires only, Oregon's
auto license fees with the roads
they buy, save many times their
cost every year.
The Ontario newspaper then
quotes the experience of a Salt
Lake City traveling salesman
driving principally in Idaho, and
the experience of a Portland man
who travels in Oregon. The Idaho
traveler "told us that he had just
replaced the four tires on the car
he bought new four months ago.
In other words this rubber bill
for 8000 miles, the distance he
had driven in four months, was
$130." This effect of roads not
up to Oregon's standard is con
trasted with the testimony of the
Portland salesman who made East
ern Oregon, "who told us," says
the Argus, "that since he had
bought his new car last Septem
ber, he had driven 19,000 miles,
and was still on the original tires.
His tire bill will be less than 40
per cent of that of the man from
Salt Lake who travels in Idaho."
Farm Relief.
FARM relief at the coming ses
sion of Congress is Imperative.
Such were the words this week of
Senator Borah of Idaho, an opin
ion expressed after interviews
with informed persons in travels
from Chicago, west to the Pacific
coast. They are in line only with
an idea agricultural leaders have
had since the last failure of the
McNary-Haugen bill to be enacted
into law.
Agriculture knows that it right
fully asks and expects the same
federal aid, protection or what
have you accorded American
manufacturers or other industries
enjoying a high tariff. That agri
culture means to attain its objec
tive was thoroughly demonstrated
at the St. Paul conference of ag
ricultural leaders this summer.
While capjtal always wields a
powerful hand when opposed to
an issue, in this particular instance
the forces are divided and for a
very good reason,,, namely that
there are manufacturers with vis
ion enough to see and know agri
culture must be put on a sound

THIS IS THE AGE OF ROMANCE
IT IS quite common to hear people regret that they live in this
prosaic age, this age given up to dollar worship and so
void of anything heroic. They wish they had lived in former
rimes when men were more occupied in glorious deeds than
they were in making money.
This illustrates the fact that you have to have a perspective
in order to judge anything properly. The trouble with our im
pression of this age is that we are too close to it.
Putting our mind in the position of fifty years from now and
looking back upon this time we would see that we are living in
the most romantic age of the world.
We have progressed more in the last twenty-five years than
the world had previously progressed in twenty-five centuries.
For the first time in history men, such as Byrd and Amund
son, have flown over the North Pole .
This is the day when Lindbergh flew alone from New York
to Paris and amazed mankind.
It is an age when more men have given themselves up to
for dollars or life.
It is an age when the League of Nations was forming and
the sentiment of world consciousness was gradually taking
shape. It is an age when women were given rights of citizen
ship and for the first time in history were released from their
bondage.
It is the first time. when any nation was able to shake itself
loose from the liquor habit and the foremost republic of the
world adopted prohibition. '
It it an age when more men have given themselves up to
scientific and medical research than ever before.
Altogether one ought to be proud to be living during the
first quarter of the twentieth century.
We are still in bondage, owing to the force of inertia.
We still vote at a voting place instead of by mail, which is
the only rational and sensible plan of voting and the only prac
tical way to secure a universal plebiscite.
What we need is not another age of living, but eyes to see
the present one in which we live.

age of a farm relief bill as spon
sored by agriculture. Evidence of
this comes in reports of an inter
view with Paul F. Beich, a candy
manufacturlrof Bloomington, 111.,
president of the Illinois Manufac
turing association, which was
broadcasted quite generally last
week. Mr. Beich said : "We must
help the farmer. He works hard
and gets less for his toil than al
most anyone else in this land of
prosperity and luxury."
Such expressions substantiate
Senator Borah's latest declaration.
And didn't he say a mouthful:
"Farm relief is imperative"?
Taxes $1,000,000 Daily.
THE tax bill of the railways, in
its ever-upward flight, is now
amounting to more than $1,020,
000 daily, according to current of
ficial government figures. In the
first six months of this year, the
Class I steam lines paid a total of
more than 185 million dollars to
national, state and local tax collec
tors, or almost two million dollars
more than was paid in the 'corres
ponding months of 1926.
The growth in the taxes paid by
the railways has been steady and
rapid. In 1911, for example, rail
way taxes amounted to $270,000
each day. By 1916, this daily av
erage tax bill had grown to $429,
000, while in 1920 it amounted to
$743,000. Further increases have
resulted in the present daily tax
bill of $1,020,000.

tions, Pullman sleeping car receipts
for 1926 were $81,834,317
which shows that it evidently pays

Michigan puts new 'no-limit"
speed law into effect. Evidently
the state motto now is: "No pe
destrian shall escape."

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, That
by virtue of an Execution and Order
of Sale in Foreclosure issued out of
the Circuit Court of the State of Ore
gon for the County of Morrow, en the
24th day of August, 1927, in a suit
wherein, on the 24th day of August,
1927, in said Court Johanna Berggren,
plaintiff, recovered judgment against
the defendants, William E, Cummings
and Ota E. Cummings, his wife, for
the sum of Nine Thousand Eight Hun
dred Dollars ($9,800.00) in United
States Gold Coin together with in
terest thereon from the ,1st day of
November, 1923, at the rate of seven
(7) per cent per annum in like Gold
Coin or the sum of $2,703.83, making
a total sum of Twelve Thousand Five
Hundred Three Dollars and Eighty
three cents ($12,503.83); and the fur
ther sum of Six Hundred Dollars
($600.00) reasonable attorney's fees;
nd the further sum of Five Hundred
Eighteen Dollars Thirty-two Cents
( $518.32 : and the further sum of
Thirty-five Dollars ($36.00); and for
Pthe costs and disbursements herein,
in the sum of Twqnty-one Dollars
Fifty Cents ($21.50), which said judg
ment was enrolled and docketed in the
Clerk's Office of said Court on the
24th day of August, 1927, and said
Execution to me directed, command
ed me in the Nume of the State of
Oregon, in order to satisfy said judg
ment, interest, attorney's fee, costs
of suit, and accruing costs, to sell
the following described real property,
to-wit:
The South half of the Northeast
quarter and the East half of the
Southeast quarter of Section
Thirteen (13); The Northeast
quarter, the East half of the
Northwest quarter, and the
Northeast quarter of the South
east quarter of Section Twenty
four (24), all in Township Two
