PAGE SIX HEPPNER GAZETTE TIMES, HEPPNER, OREGON, THURSDAY, JULY 7, 1927. L Some damage ia reported to the wheat on the McCarty place on the cast branch of Sand Hollow. Ray mond Ferguson is farming this place which is sown to forty fold wheat that gave prospect of a yield of at least 30 bushels. A hot wave struck the ranch last Thursday and that portion of the grain that was yet rank and tender was stricken as though hot water had been poured on it. The grain was all well filled, but this portion that was hit by the heat will be shriveled. The yield has been cut to about 20 bushels. We have not heard of any other fields be ing damaged, though the report was brought to town that this hot wave was noticed in various parts of the county. County Agent Smith, who made an examination of the Fergu son fields this morning, reports to us that the damage is about as we have stated. C. B. Cox of Heppner had acres of Regal Turkey Red wheat certified recently by G. R. Hyslop, professor of farm crops at the Oregon Agricul tural College. This wheat is a new variety which is supposed to be smut resistant. In examining the small patch, Professor Hyslop found it to be one-tenth of one per cent of for eign growth. A small patch was also treated with smut before planting and the stand now has practically no smut in it while other varieties of wheat treated at the same time and growing-beside the Regal, are prac tically entirely smutted. Pendleton East Oregonian. Dr. and Mrs. A. D. McMurdo, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Smead and F. B. Nickerson returned home Thursday evening last. Dr. McMurdo and wife and Mr. Nickerson were at Boise, j where they spent three days, during which time Dr. McMurdo was in at tendance on the convention of the Pacific Northwest Medical associa tion, and reports a splendid session. Mr. and Mrs. Smead visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Boyd in Caldwell, and barring the accident to Mrs. Smead which occurred Thursday morning, the trip was a very enjoy able one. Levonne Fetter, aged 12, was quite seriously hurt Saturday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Driskell on Eight Mile. While playing with the ether children, she ran into a barbed wire fence and received a cut across the throat six inches -in length that required ten stitches to close. The injured child was brought to the office ' of Dr. McMurdo for treatment. She was able to return with her mother to their home at Freewater on Tues day. E. S. Duran was in the city from Lexington on Wednesday, fie expects the people of his section to be in the midst of their wheat harvest right away, and combines are moving into a number of fields north of Lex ington already. Born At the home of Mr. Casteel near Heppner on Friday, July 1, 1927, to Mr. and Mrs. Harve Merrill, an 84 pound daughter. Lee Reaney was here for a short time this morning. He informs this paper that he will begin work on the Dwight Misner wheat with his new Case combine tomorrow. Misner has about two thousand acres of Turkey Red wheat to he harvested and will operate a small combine of his own. By the time the Misner wheat is threshed, Mr. Reaney can begin on his own fields in the Lexington section. A Good Afalfa and Sheep Ranch For Sale Located on John Day high way, one mile of Dayville.
