Beckwith, official court re porter, drove over from Pendleton on Saturday to attend the session of cir cuit court here. He returned home on Tuesday, being accompanied by Judge and Mrs. Phelps. The Decem ber term pi court was a short one. Miss Margaret Phelps, eldest daugh ' ter of Judge and Mrs. G. W. Phelps of Pendleton and former Hcppner girl, is supervisor of music in the schools of Hammond, Indiana, this year. Hammond is situated about 40 minutse ride out of Chicago, and Miss Phelps is pleased with the sit uation as it gives her the opportun ity of attending much of the best musical and operatic performances that coma to the big city. Mr. and Mrs. Stacy Roberts depart ed for Portland on Sunday where they will in the future make their home. Mr. and Mrs. Roberts have lived in Heppner for many years, hav ing built a nice home here, but this move is made necessary on account of the condition of Mrs. Roberts' health, it being found that she should live in a lower altitude. The Roberts home has been leased by Frank Shveily and he and has family have moved into ihe place from the Lawson ranch just below town where they have lived during the past year. Xmas Cards and Seals. Gordon's. Jay Hiatt of Rhea creek is prepar ing to get into the turkey raising game proper. He recently shipped in two toms and six hens of the fa mous Goldband strain of bronze tur keys as a stater for his flock, and will have some more coming. The ranch on which Jay lives on Rhea creek south of Heppner is ideal for turkey raising and he will also en gage quite extensively in other lines of poultry, finding -the game profit able if rightly carried on. W. L. McCaleb returned on last evening from Portland, where, with Mrs. McCaleb he has spent the past four weeks. Mrs. McCaleb underwent a major operation at Portland and has been at Good Samaritan hospi tal for some three weeks while re covering. She was able to come as far as Arlington on the return Tip and will arrive home on Sunday. James Hart of Longview, Wash., was called to Heppner the first of the week because of the death of his brother, R. M. Hart, late of Portland. Jim is now with the Hotel Monticello at Longview, where he has been stew ard for more than two years past. .He was unable to remain over for a visit with Heppner friends and re turned home on Tuesday night. Lester I. Jones, pastor of the Chris tian church of Enterprise, arrived at Heppner on Monday and has been engaged in a series of evangelistic meetings at the Christian church here during the week. He will return to Enterprise on Saturday, and the com ing week Pastor Guy L. Drill, assist ed by Mrs. Drill will be here from Pendleton to carry on the meeting. Mrs. W. P. Mahoney arrived home on Friday from a visit at Prairie City, where she was called earlier in the week by the very serious ill ness of her son-in-law, I. A. Mather, head of the Prairie schools. When Mrs. Mahoney left Mr. Mather had greatly improved and expected to be able to resume his duties at school the first of the week. Plain Xmas Mixed Candies. Gor don's. Laxton McMurray this week pur chased the Ernest Moyer wheat land near Jordan Siding, which in adjoin ing other lands that Mr. McMurray owns in that vicinity. The deal was closed on Tuesday. Mr. Moyer bought this land originally from Mr. Mc Murray. Prewitt Cox came up from his home near Oregon City the first of the week for a visit with his mother, Mrs. J. H, Cox, an invalid at the Morrow General hospital in this city. Mrs. A. M. Phelps was called to the bedside of her sister, Miss Marshall, at Marion, Iowa, and arrived there the early part of the past week. Miss Marshall, who has been ill during a greater part of the past year was in a very critical condition when Mrs. Thelps received the word to go to Iowa. Adam Knoblock was brought to the Heppner Surgical hospital Tuesday afternoon suffering a violent attack of appendicitis. Owing to the ser iousness of his condition, an imme diate operation was performed. He is doing as well as could be expected at this time. Judge and Mrs. Gilbert W. Phelps came over from Pendleton on Satur day, returning home on Tuesday. Judge Phelps was here to attend to court matters and be on hand for the opening of the regular December term on Monday. Forest Permittees Will Meet Here December 21 There will be a meeting of stock mne at Heppner on Tuesday after noon, December 21, at the Elks club rooms, beginning promptly at 2:00 o'clock. This meeting is particularly for those stockmen holding grazing permits in" the Umatilla forest, and the invitation goes out to all such in this district. Matters pertaining to grazing fees and predatory animal control will be prominent on the program, and it is expected that all interests affected by these questions will be heard at this meeting. A similar meeting was held recently at Pendleton. The bus inss is important and it is hoped that there will be a good representation of the stockmen present.
