STATE MARKET AGT.
Free Lime Booklet.
The State Lime Board has compiled
an 8-page booklet containing much
valuable information for farmers in
the use of agricultural lime in main
tainance of soil fertility, which may
be had on request at the office of the
State Market Agent, 712 Court House
Portland, or of the State Lime Board,
Salem. Practically all of the soils
of the Willamette valley and coast
counties are in acid condition and
the matter of bringing them back to
high fertility is of outstanding im
portance. Fined for Short-Weighing.
The state potato law provides that
in sale or shipment of potatoes in
lots of 50 pounds or more the stock
must be graded and the grade and
seller's name stenciled on the sacks.
A large Portland fruit and produce
company put out potatoes in sacks
of slightly less than 60 pounds in
weight, thus evading the grading and
stenciling provisions, and put them
on sale, but the sacks were marked
M pounds. The state Weights and
Measures department promptly ar
rasted them for short-weighing, when
they were fined $16 and the court
costs.
Larger Wheat Surplus.
The U. S. Department of Agricul
ture estimates there will be an in
crease of 14 per cent in the acreage
of winter wheat in the United States
next year, while there will not be any
material increase outside of this
country. If the winter and spring
wheat yields in the United States
shall equal the ten year average, the
Department estimates the exportable
surplus will be considerably larger
than that of this year.
Mint Acreage Increasing.
Reports are that a 3000-acre mint
crop is being harvested in the Wil
lamette valley this fall, an increase
of about 2000 acres over last year.
Mint has been found a nrofitable ctod
in the valley when grown on suitable
soils. It is reported that on irrigat
ed fields $175 per acre can be pro
duced, while the cost per acre is about
$76.
Canada Leads in Co-Operation.
Canada is making more advance
ment in the way of co-operative mar
keting of agricultural products than
any other country of the world. Ap
proximately 430,000 farmers out of a
total of 700,000 in the Dominion are
selling their products through such
organizations, to the value of $300,
000,000. Canadians respond readily
and loyally to the movement and
many powerful co-operatives are be
ing built up. When more than 50
per cent of the farmers of a country
of the size of Canada combine for
mutual protection, there is signifi
cance in the co-operative movement.
One Hundred Tons of Horseradish.
Eossi & Orselli of Beaverton have
a horseradish farm of 23 acres that
is attracting considerable state at
tention. The farm is beaver dam,
tiled, and from it they have sold one
hundred tons; 50 tons of grade No. 1
and nearly the same of grades Nos.
2 and 3. The owners say they cannot
Bupply the orders received and that
there are ready markets on the Pacific
coast for far more of the roots than
they can produce.
Favorable Trade Showing.
In July of this year our exports
increased $29,000,000 and our imports
$14,000,000 over the same month last
year.

I. L. Patterson
GOVERNOR
V
The election of Steiwer as U. S. Sen- v
ator from Oregon is of national import
ance. By virtue of republican control of
the senate Senator McNary holds the
chairmanship of the important irriga
tion and agriculture committees. If the
voters of this state should go so far
afield as o select a democrat it might
mean a loss of republican control of the
senate and a consequent surrender of
Senator MoNary's vital committee chair
manships. A vote for Steiwer, the regular repub
lican primary nominee is a vote for re
publican control of national affairs.
Patterson is familiar with the prob
lems that would confront him as Gov
ernor of Oregon. A farmer, he under
stands the problems of the farmer. A
business man he knows the needs of
business, He promises fair and just
treatment for all. He will seek to lower
taxes through a reduction of the cost of
state government. He will not follow es
tablished precedent nnd spend most of
his time away from tho state capitol.
Patterson will be your governor, on
the job, attending to the business of the
state as It accrues.
