AN IMPORTANT milestone in the history of our nation's progress is at hand. Next Sunday the United States of America will have reached the 150th anniver-l sary of their birth. A century and a half to an individual seems a long time, but measured by the calendar of nations it is a trifling span. We, as a nation, discarded our swaddling clothes but a short time past and have reached the age of adolescence. Our physical growth in our childhood days was rapid. From the 13 original states in that far Atlantic corner that first united in launching a new scheme of self government, we have expanded across a continent until we now number 48 states on our nation's roster, besides territories and pro tectorates in far lands. From an unpromising infant we have grown to assume the proportions of a giant a veritable physical giant. Our industrial growth has also been rapid, and with virgin re sources to work with we have be come extremely wealthy, as na tions go. Now, we are but enter ing the age of sophistication. The virulent blood of youth is surging through our body, and we are dreaming and scheming ways of expending our pent up energy. The World War opened our eyes to many things, and started us on a new era of education. We found that we could no longer rest se cure in the tenets given us by our forbears. Modern problems de mand modern solutions. Still, we find the constitution of our fathers a steadying hand to guide us as exigencies arise. And, though that document was written for a far different age, the principles which it has defined are good for all time. We may become con fused in the whirr of up-to-date life, and snatch at different isms, creeds, and styles of government such is the way of adolescence but in time we will find it wise to build more solidly on the con stitution that has already carried us safely through many a storm. Let us remember on this great anniversary the wisdom of Jeffer son, the author of our constitution, and those other wise men who sur rounded him, and keep forever sa cred their cherished heritage. One of the surest ways for Ore gon to increase its taxes and frighten investors, is to bond the state for $40,000,000, as proposed, in order to engage in a hydro-electric power development scheme. There is no occasion for such an expendutire, except as a political measure which is supposed to ap peal to one block of voters. State socialism has been a dismal fail ure wherever tried, and a heavy expense to taxpayers. There is little likelihood that Oregon voters would sanction such a proposition with the train of officeholders and new state jobs which it would nec essitate. FOR SALE Fourteen foot bar weeder. When a depositor main tains a reasonably large, steady balance, it is an indica tion to us that he knows how to use money successfully. It gives us a reason to believe that loans to him will be safe.
