HEPPNER will be the scene of a Fourth of July celebration the coming month for the first time in several years. In the guise of an athletic carnival spon sored by the American Legion, this celebration should prove all that is promised for it. Heppner business men believe this to be true, as evidence their full-page invitation in this issue, a whole hearted request for everyone to come and enjoy the hospitality of the city on this occasion. The Legion boys have been working hard to arrange top-notch events for the three-day carnival, and the program as announced shows their efforts have not been wasted. ' The city is behind the Legion, and the promise of our merchants that the celebration will be really worth-while is bona-fide. Heppner invites everyone to share in a joyous Fourth within her gates. PUBLIC FORUM Under this head will be published all communications to the Editor containing comment of public in terest. Such communications are welcome, but must bear the writ er's signature. Signature will be withheld from publication If so desired. To the Editor of the Gazette Times: The program, as printed in the last issue of your paper, for the celebra tion of our National Independence Day, induces me to offer for publica tion, the inserted clipping from the Literary Digest, quoting from the Christian Century and the San Fran cisco Monitor. We may naturally and rightfully expect that the features of the cele bration of this day shall correctly ex press the character of the people. This will be the case, whether we re main true to the principles of liberty for which our fathers at Bunker Hili faced the muskets of the Red-coats and shed their blood, or whether we degenerate to the vulgar life of the Sodomite, and amuse ourselves with bull fights and battering each other's lives out in pugilistic combats. In offering this clipping it is hard ly necessary to say that the senti ment here voiced is from people and organizations that are qualified to speak, and whom we cannot afford to disregard. It is perfectly possible that a community may become so en chanted by the call of the Sirens, so infatuated with physical beauty, so enchained by carnal passion, as to utterly lose its moral bearings. Clipping: "Bathing beauties are banned as an advertisement for Cape May, New Jer sey, and The Christian Century (Un denominational) ventures to hope that Cape May's refusal to send a rep resentative to a bathing-beauty con test at Atlantic City may be the hap py augury of a return of sense to American municipalities. To this re ligious journal it is difficult to see anything but viciousness in these an nual displays. For, " 'As they are conducted, they pan der to the prurient and expose their participants to temptations which no community has a right to set in the way of its members. Careful inves tigations, made by organizations such at. the Y. W. C. A. and the women's clubs, have shown that, from begin ning to end, these contests work to undermine the moral stamina of the girls who are in them. They begin with local competitions, fostered by sensational newspapers. In these crowds are gathered to watch while judges pass on the 'points of empty- headed girls who pose in abbreviated bathing-suits. From these local con tests the winners pass to a week at the seaside resort, where, in every possible way, them physical attrac tions are exploited, and they are sub jected to a sort of flattery which leads many of them into dangerous paths, The city which tries to advertise it self in such a way has a curious sense of civic pride and responsibility. The city manager of Cape May is only talking sense when he says, We can not see the propriety of young women being sent with pomp and orcum stance to Atlantic City, or any other city, once a year to be measured, weighed, appraised and gazed on by a curious multitude. Call us old fashioned if you like, but count Cape May out. We will keep our beautiful girls at home.' "Do not blame the 'silly' girls too much, says the San Francisco Mom tor (Catholic) in censuring a bathing- girl contest at Santa Cruz. Rather, "'Place the odium, if you are not too far gone to resent these pander ings, on the yahoo secretaries of Chambers of Commerce, and the un cultured newspaper editors who pro mote these pagan shows. Bathing beauty contests are the highest con tribution made to American civiliza tion by the Babbitts. We need not dig in deserts to find pictures of ape men and stone-age missing-links. Th gibbering chatter ef tho mala judge and onlookers at Santa Crux has enough of the baboon expression to convince us that Beaut? Contest? have nothing to do with city planni-iK or lesort development'." There are cardinal truths that un derlie the structure of life, tested over and over by the peoples of every age. Sands of the deserts cover the bones of obliterated nations that have dared defy the laws of these truths. We may look lightly upon the Decalogue and the Sermon on the Mount, but they contain the girding truths of the moral universe. Any city that can invite the flagrant desecration of the Sabbath (under the pretense of pa triotic demonstration) and pander to the exhibitions of carnal passion and lust, may boast of "modern attrac tions," but it is built on sand. In the name of virtue I counsel the parents, of the community, do not jeopardize further the safety of the girlhood -and the boyhood of our homes by encouraging and patronis ing "Bathing Beauty Contests," whose history is being written with the blood of its victims.
