The Marker Placed.
THOSE people who gathered at
Wells Springs last Sunday to
dedicate a marker to the memory
of pioneers who died on the Old
Oregon Trail were given a slight
taste of the hardships which their
forefathers had to bear on ap
proaching this spot by ox-team
nearly a century before. But only
a slight taste. Sunday, the auto
mobile was substituted for the ox-
team and covered wagon, and a
graded road replaced the barely
distinguishable trail of the '50's,
it requiring less than an hour for
the trip from Willow creek to the
springs Sunday, that took the fore
bears a full day to cover, and that
with the added advantage of up
holstered cushions and cantilever
springs. But still they had a taste.
It was hot, uncomfortably so,
and many were heard to complain.
And it was dusty, too; probably
more so than in the pioneer days
before the road was much worn.
But again, there was a soda pop
wagon furnishing refreshments,
some carried ice water in thermos
bottles, and the ladies had silk
umbrellas to protect their dainty
complexions from the relentless
rays of sunlight.
Nature provided appropriate
circumstances for the placing of
the marker that brought recollec
tions of pioneer conditions at
Wells Springs, but man, in the in
tervening century between the
time of discovery and the dedica
tion of the spot, has equipped him
self far better to withstand such.
Those circumstances, neverthe
less, helped bring more vividly to
mind the trying situations in which
our forebears were placed in gain
ing for us this cherished state, and
the dedication service was made
none the less impressive by this
feature of discomfort.
The marker was placed in a fit
ting manner for a fitting purpose.
The heroes who sacrificed their
lives on the Old Oregon Trail are
no less heroes than those Pilgrim
forefathers who were laid beneath
Plymouth sod. The same motives
probably were not present in each
case. But in both instances the
pioneering instinct, if instinct it
can be called, was a moving fac
tor, and it is this factor that has
made for the wonderful progress
of American civilization. Not
alone should we remember and
reverence those heroes of the Old
Oregon Trail, but it is most fitting
of all that we give to our posterity
the right to know and reverence
them. And to this end we should
mark spots of historical import
ance, that the markers may be
mute evidence of what in histories
alone might seem mere fiction to
future generations.
The work of Sarah Childress
Polk chapter, D. A. R., and others
responsible for bringing this mon
ument to morrow county should
receive the warmest of commen
dation and thanks from our peo
ple.
