OREGON

Portland Only?
Says the "Portland school machine"
organ, the Oregon Voter:
"... Portland by its immense
voting power practicully controls the
selection of superintendent.
We have it in our power to impose
our will on all the schools of Oregon
outside of Portland."
The superintendent referred to is
the state Superintendent of Public
Instruction and this "machine" is try
ing to dictate to the voters the elec
tion of ITS choice for this important
office.
Fred J. Tooze, opposed by this ma
chine, urges stnte-wide uniformity of
textbooks. (Compare his statement in
tho Candidates' Pamphlet with those
of his opponents). He supports a
definite normal school policy for the
entire state including a normal school
for Eastern Oregon; greater empha
sis on the fundamental subjects, and !
vocational training; immediate sur
rey of the loan textbook plan for leg
islation; and improved conditions for
the rural schools.
If you want a school superintendent
who is under no obligations to any
political machine, school clique, or in
dividual and thoroughly trained in
normal college and university, exper
ienced and successful in rural, village
iind city schools,
Vote for
FRED J. TOOZE
Republican Candidate.

The strongest opposition to
Fred Steiwer is found in the dem
ocratic party. Democratic poli
ticians and newspapes brand
Steiwer as an enemy of the direct
primary. They cry "conspir
acy" and seek to lead people to
believe that Steiwer would abol
ish the direct primary. Nothing
is further from the truth. Stei
wer's enemies are doing every
thing in their power to shatter the
great strength of public approval that is back of Steiwer. They
fear him They know they cannot defeat him in the general'
election.
Steiwer will be a credit to Oregon in the Unted States Sen
ate. He is clean, enegetic, capable and aggressive. His rec
ord as a public official is flawless.
