RELIEF FOR FARM
FR
Eastern Oregon Candidate
For Senator Makes
Announcement.
I hereby announce myself as can
didate for the nomination of United
States senator on the Republican
ticket. If elected I will be guided by
tne following principles:
I believe that no prosperity can be
permanent that is not shared bv all
classes and that the prosperity of this
country, especially of Oregon, de
pends upon the farmer receiving a
fair price for his products.
I favor the passage, by Congress,
of a farm relief bill which will assist
the farmer in marketing his crops
so that the surplus exported will not
set the price of what is marketed at
home. And further assist him by
protected laws so that he may re
ceive an equitable price for home
markets. When this is accomplished
I favor an aggressive policy looking
to the reclamation and development
of our arid lands, the building of
roads, the development of idle water
power and the upbuilding of mer
chant marines.
I believe in the principles of and
the rigid enforcement of the 18th
Amendment and the Volstead Act. I
believe in more severe penalties be
ing enacted for Prohibition Law vio
lators and that these penalties be en
forced impartially upon those who
have illegal possessioi of liquor and
those who manufacture unlawful bev
erages. I believe public officials who
take an oath to uphold our laws and
then violate them are a great menace
to our government and should receive
the maximum punishment.
I favor the strict enforcement of
the narcotic law, the emigration law,
favor the enactment of the Child La
bor law amendment and believe in the
right of Labor to organize and bar
gain collectively.
I believe the Monroe Doctrine
should be our guide in forming con
nections with foreign nations.
1 believe the Direct Primary should
not be amended or supplanted in fa
vor of hte convention system.
I believe in reforestation and ad
ministering of our puolic grazing
lands in the interest of the small
land owner.
In the event of war I favor the uni
versal draft of industry as well as
that uf man power.
A. R. SHt MWAY.
OREGON FIRST AND
ALWAYS IS SLOGAN
OF FRED STEIWER
SPRING TONICS.
From State Board of Health.
In the good old days many persons
thought they needed a spring tonic.
Mother made sassafras tea or pre
pared a mixture of sulfur and mo
lasses and the youngsters were forced
to take a dose whether they liked it
or not. Today we believe that scar
city of green vegetables has some
thing to do wtih the lowered vitality
at springtime.
The best spring tonic is good-tast
ing, refreshing and health-giving
vegetables and fruits. Vegetables
and fruits are important parts of the
diet. They supply iron, lime and oth
er mineral elements that enrich the
blood, nourish the tissues and pro
vide bone-building materials. Veg
etables and fruits are especially valu
able because of their rich vitamin
content.
Vitamines are life-giving sub
stances in the food, without which,
no matter how much food one eats,
disorders of nutrition occur and pro
tection against disease is lowered or
lost. Vitamines are a means of keep
ing up the health of the individual.
They are known as vitamines "A,"
"B," and "C," and each has a nutri
tional value.
Spinach contains a lot of vitamin
"A" and this vitamin aids in prevent
ing and curing rickets, malnutrition
and bad teeth. Cabbage, tomatoes,
spinach and beans contain a wealth
of vitamin "B"j this vitamin pro
motes growth and improves the ap
petite. Lettuce and tomatoes are
rich in viamin "C"; this vitamin aids
in the prevention and cure of scurvy.
A child who gets all the necessary
vitumines in proportion to his needs,
is bright, active and happy. His eyes
sparkle, his skin is rosy and he has
a lively expression. His muscles are
firm and his body well- rounded. At
no times does he need to be tortured
with sulfur and molasses.
Vegetables are excellent spring
tonics and have taken the place of
disagreeable home remedies formerly
thought necessary to health. Equally
important is the wonderful out-of-doors
with lots of fresh air. There
is nothing just like the exhilaration
and thrill of out-of-door life.
Walk for health. It is the best
exercise. Eat your tonic with a fork
instead of a spoon. This is the new
idea for a spring tonic fresh vege
tables and fruit. Green leafy vege
tables and fruit are available the
year around. , Plenty of oxygeti plus
a liberal diet of green vegetables will
provide the energy and vitality neces
sary to insure health and happiness.
