Everything From Big Scales to
Milk Bottles Tested and In
spected Without Favor.

One of the most active and efficients
departments of the state is the Sealer
of Weights and Measures, which is
now under the State Market Agent,
and the quarterly report just filed has
much interesting data. This depart
raent will weigh one hundred tons of
hay at nine o'clock and jump to milk
bottles the next hour; it will inspect
a loadometer and then berry boxes;
it will inspect two or three thousand
scales and then go to pill slips and
mattresses; it jumps from candy
boxes to gasoline pumps, and then
onto water meters, wood piles, bread
loaves, flour, honey, lard and scores
of other things, It is called the "sol
id boiled" department because of the
fact that the officials never cover up
or play favorites they report accord
ing to the facts.
During the three months of the re
port just covered there were 3,332
scales inspected, sealed, adjusted and
condemned; 7,270 weights inspected,
and 7 condemned; 3,022 liquid meas-J
ures were inspected and 26 condemn
ed; 594 gasoline pumps were inspect
ed and 10 put out of business, and
there were about 75 other inspections
of various kinds. If a irood dealer
gives hort measure a request to the
department will bring a deputy to
the place in quick time; if a poultry
buyer uses faulty scales the depart
ment will be hot after him on re
quest. Everything under weight and
measures will be investigated with
out charge. This department is one
of the utmost benefit to paoducers
and consumers generally.
How to Use Concrete.
There are hundreds of ways and
places where concrete may be used
for economy and advantage on farms
in barns, silos, fence posts, septic
tanks, floors, troughs, walks, walls
and basements, storage cellars, hog
wallows', manure pits, foundations,
etc If any farmer is interested he
may secure booklets on any particular
use, without charge, by writing to
O. A. C, Corvaljis. These booklets
give estimates on cost, blue prints,
how to mix and much generaf infor
mation. New Flax Harvesting Machine.
The Campbell ranch in Montana is
working out a system that might be
well worth while for flax growers in
the. Willamette valley to investigate,
that of harvesting flax from the wind
row by a combined harvester-thresher
that it is claimed will cut the cost
from 18 to 6 cents per bushel.
Oregon, Seed Potato State,
Under the present seed certifica
tion law Oregon is jumping to the
front as a seed potato state and many
farmers in different sections are rais
ing inspected stock to be certified
to by the O. A. C. The county agent
at Hillsboro reports the following
farmers of Washington county whose

What are the secondary effects? In
flammation of the kidneys is com
mon one. Complications of the ear
are numerous, scarlet fever being one
of the most common causes of deaf
ness in children.
Is there any protection against
scarlet fever? Yes. There is a sus
ceptibility test known as the Dick
test. There is also an antitoxin for
immunizing the susceptible.
How long should scarlet fever be
quarantined? Not less than 31 days.

the 2653 students who submitted in
formation cards this year are church
memqers, or have some denomina
tional or religious preference, accord
ing to a report compiled by the cam
pus Y. M. C. A. and Y. W. C. A. of
ficials. This figure shows a slight propor
tional decrease over last year when
92 per cent expressed somo church
preference.
Presbyterians lead with 560 giving
this denomination their preference,
while the Methodist Episcopalians
come second with 381 and those of
the Christian church, third, with 240.
Others in order of their totals, are;
Episcopalian, 205; Christian Scien
tists, 138; Catholics 131; Baptists
118; Congregationalists, 98; Luther
ans, 37; Jewish, 18; Unitarian, 16;
Latter Day Saints (Mormons) 12, and
United Brethern,' 4. Eighteen were
miscellaneous. ,
Sixty-six simply marked protestant
on their cards giving no denomina
tional preference, while 617 did not
mark the cards at all.

Why is scarlet fever prevalent in
Oregon? Largely because mild cases
are not diagnosed and properly iso
lated. Thirty-six cases were report
ed for the week ending October 24,
1925. - .
Why is scarlet fever a dangerous
disease of childhood? Because two
to four persons out of every hundred
infected die from the disease itself
and its complications and consequen
ces are even more serious.

Are "scarletina" and "scarlet rash"
forms of scarlet fever? Yes. It is
through the mild cases that the dis
ease is most often spread.
What ages are most susceptible to
scarlet fever? It may be contracted
at any age but mora than 95 of all
cases occur in persons less than 15
years old. Children between five and
ten years are most susceptible.
At what time of the year is scar
let fever most prevalent? Epidemics
are most prevalent in the fall and
winter.
How is it spread? By contact with
persons ill with the disease or with
articles that have been contaminated
with the germ. If the germs get into
