LAMONI.
The Headquarters of the Joseph
ite Mormon Church.
The Situation of LamoniThe Reor
ganized C'ittt cn of Jettu Christ of
Latter Day Saints History, Doc
trines and Organization.
Location at Lamoni,
Contentions with the neighbor
ing people contiuuod. Young's
policy aggravated the difficulty.
On the iirst of October, 1845, a con
vention of citizens of severnl adja
cent counties was held at Carthage,
to take action in regard to the re
moval of the Mormons. Young
entered into an agreement with
this convention to remove from Ill
inois. The removal began in
February, 1810. In 1847 the Mor
mons, nnder tho leadership of
Young, effected a settlement in
Utah, which was then under the
jurisdiction of Mexico, but was
;eded to the United States the fol
lowing year.
THE BE0P.3AXIZED CHU11CH.
Joseph Smith's widow, his
brother, William Smith, John E.
Pago, Lyman Wright, William
Marks, and a very large majority
if others, had refused to subscribe
to some of the new dogmas pro
mulgated by Young or to give al
legiance to his authority. At the
lime of th removal from Nauvoo,
this largo majority did not go to
Utah, but remained iu various
parts of the United States, the
Canndas and in foreign lands, but
principally in Illinois, Iowa and
Northern Missouri. A movement
for the reorganization on the old
line began in 1851. Jason W.
Bi iggtt, Zauas II. Gurley, Daniel
Powell, Cyrus and Reuben New
kirk, H. II. Deaue and others were
the active movers. A conference
was held at Newark, Wis., J una 12
1852. It denounced the dogma of
polygamy then known to be se
cretly held by Young. At a spec
ial conference called at Salt Lake
for this pu1 p se, August 21), 185?,
loiiiig lirst publicly promulgated i
this doctrine. Tho Newark con
ference made a general declaration
o its principles in tho following
resolution:
Resolved, That tliifl conference
believe it the duty of the elders of
the church (who have been legally
ordained) to cry repentance hikI
remission of sins to this genera
tion through obedience to the Gos
pel as revealed in tho record of
the Jew.-t, the Book of Mormon
and Book of Doctrines and Cove
nants; and not faint in the diti
chargo of duty.
At another conference held Oc
tober 0, 1852, according to the
church historian, "the gifts were
abundantly enjoyed, and the swiiits
were greatly strengthened and as
sured of the triumph of the work
of restoration to the old paths.
Also, during thesa meetings, we
were forewarned of the war be
tween the north and sonth, its san
guinary character and its extent;
also, tho success of tho north was
portrayed iu all the vivid exact
ness of tha subsequent history of
the civil war." A more complete
organization was perfected at Yel
lowstone, Wisconsin, April 0,1853.
THE SOS OF THE I'liorHET.
At an annual conference held at
Am boy, Lea count', Illinois, April
(!, 1800, Joseph Smith, Jr., son of
tlie prophet, ir.s received into fel
lowship on a baptism performed
by his futher, and was unanimously
chosen to preside. The historian
of that occasion writss: "His
coming and presence at the confer
ence had been ceitilied by the
spirit untl confidently predicted;
aud when he, with his mother whh
presented to the asseuiblv, great
, enthusiasm whs manifest." The
membni'F'hip of the reorganized
church was now about two hun
dred. A direct issue was made
between this ami tho Utah church ;
the ono flourishing in almost open
defiance of the laws of tho United
States, the other teaching obedi
ence; the one teaching and practi
cing polygamy, the other teaching
inuiiogomy and upholding tho sst
crediiHHK of the family relations.
Bosh claimed the legal succession
to the church organized April 0,
1830. This matter was brought to
a legal test in a suit brought be
fore the district court of common
pleas of Lake county, Ohio, in
February, 1S8I), to perfect the title
to the temple at Kirtland iu the
reorganized church. The suit was
d icided in favor rl tho Josephitex.
Recently a revival movement in

immoral association and a law-do-fying
power. Their missionaries
have sometimes been obliged to
appeal to the representative of
the government's authority in the
territory for protection in their
work of preaching their gospel
among tho Brighamites of Utah.
They now have congregations es
