A correspondent writing to the
Boise Statesman from the golden
gulches near Idaho City, under
HntA of Not. 26. savs: When I ar
rived here I fourtd about a foot of
enow about the city, while reports ;
were current that the road to' wan
ner was blocked so as to be almost,
if not utterly impassable. Every
day since I arrived has been mark
ed by a snow-storm of from six to
24 hours in duration, and from
present appearances the. end is not
yet. Notwithstanding the unfavor
able weather, accidents, discus
sions, daiicea and funerals all.' go
on uninterruptedly.' Yesterday
was a day . of funerals, obsequies
being held over two Mongolians
who have long made this burg
their stopping-place. One was a
miner who met his death while
digging on a bank that was unsup
ported. The other acted his part
as a linguist and interpreter, and
as husband to a woman whosfe
grief is light to-day, but whose
lamentations yesterday would have
drawn teara from the eye of a
needle. .The first was laid to rest
on the hillside, in the morning by
the bright light, not a funeral note
marking his passage to the silent
city, although he was not entirely
forgotten, as his grave was deco
rated with rice and punks, and
some very bad whisky. The sec
ond headed a magnificent cortege
composed of sleighs with mourn
ing occupants and. a hundred celes
tials on toot; At i the. house . the
ceremony was elaborate, the best
8 man being displayed in a wooden
overcoat with velvet trimmings,
his widow arrayed in spotless
wiijte and uncontrollable I agony
Besides," there were a preacher
and a musician of rare note, who
occupied time alternately. Then
there were attendants, brother
masons with gay ribbons on their
arms, to light punks and fire off
fire-crackers,' and make slow, def
erential bows as they passed the
Bilent sleeper. Ihere was also i
supper : of, ; bavbaued ; pig, ; roas
ciucn, rice, ceiery, tea, ana an
abundance of brandy, all arrang
ed in a tempting manner; -To

It is doubted that there is any
agricultural land in the United
States which yields as much profit
to the acre as the thousand acres
f oyster planting ground in Rhode
Island. In 1879, according to an
authentic report, 2 acres of this
area paid $0,58:2.90 into the . State
Treasury, it employed capital of
over $1,IX)0,000; it paid 125,000 in
wages to tho people of the State;
it furnished 666,500 bushels f
oysters, worth 680,500, or $738.56
to the acre, and it gave support to
