Tbe practice of breeding from young
and Immature sows Is not to be com
mended. The offspring of full grown
dams will be larger, more vigorous and
early maturing. There is also a meas
ure of risk with the young sow. She

kler and so furnish scanty food for small
litters. She may also prove an irregu
lar breeder. W hen a sow proves all
right In these respects and her pigs
have the required feeding quality, she
should be retained for breeding pur
poses as long as ber usefulness con
tinues. After farrowing If the sow can have
the run of a clover field In spring and
summer It will be decidedly to her ad
vantage. Cared for In this way, she
will be likely to give to her pigs a
goodly supply of milk, which will con
duce to a rapid and vigorous growth.
Any loss of growth through negligence
at this early stage will be difficult to
recover as the pigs .grow older. A
stunted pig Is unprofitable and does
not grow or fatten rapidly. The pigs
soon learn to drink milk and slop from
the dam's trough, and as soon as they
are Ave or sis weeks old should be
fed a little sweet milk each day In a
yard where the sow cannot follow. Fed
In this way relieves the sow in a meas
ure, and the full supply of food causes
them to grow rapidly.
