Probably 12,000.
While the political battle in Morrow
county was practical!? closed Saturday
night there was a hot time in Heppner
all day Monday. It was an ideal day,
the rain Suuday night having made a
temporary settlement with the doit and
brought on a mild, refreshing breeze
which made Monday all that could be
wisnea lor, as lar as tne weather was
concerned, (or the battle of ballots.
The fight centered almost entirely In
the fight (or sheriff, though the local
option bill was a subject for speculation.
The lines on the sheriff fight had been
clossly drawn (or fome weeks, and
Monday it was a hurry and a scurry
everywhere by friends of each side to
get their (orce into line. J. W. Morrow,
tax commissipner (or the O. E. X
came np from Portland baturday to
direct his influence in behalf of L. L,
Matlock. T. W. Ayers jr., of Pendleton
was also here in bebalf of his father and
for Leslie. All the latent forces of dem
ocrats through the county were brought
into action, and the result was favorable
for the minority party. We say favorable
because they elected one half of their
tiiket against the republicans who
elected only six including G. W. Phelps
for district attorney, and W. G. Cole
joint representative, . with a majority
of 250. It is conceded by allthat there
was more scratching of ballots than at
any previous election in the county. In
fact it is said that there was not a straight
out ballot cast by either-party. The
result was a surprise from one end of
the ticket to the other. Most of the
men the republicans were sure of elect
ing they lost and most of those the dem
ocrats figured on electing were def-ated.
It was a conglomeration of surprises. The
democrats felt sure they would elect the
sheriff, but tailed, and the republicans
were certain that they would elect the
treasurer but lost by 1 75 votes.
E.J. Merrill was beaten by Strattoa
democrat, for school superintendent by
39 votes. The republicans elected
Griffin and the democrats elected Mc
Carty for commissioners. W. O. Cole,
republican, is elected joint representative
for Morrow and Umatilla, but his
majorty is not yet known.
Geo. Whiteis, republican, plurality
over J. P. Williams, democrat, for
justice of the peace in the 6th Judicial
district was 64, and P. C. Creswell,
democrat, had a plurality of 6 over G. B,
Hatt, republican, for constable. The
majority for local option was 157.
The indications are that the state
ticket is elected by 30,000. Williamsons'
plurality in the Second Congressional
district is placed at 12,000, while Her
manns' in the first is estimated at 7000
to 8000.

This Year,
Based on reports from all sections of
the county the wheat crop of Morrow
county this year will be something like
2,000,000 bushels, the bumper crop of
the county., Farmers in general say the
stand is good, although the cool nights
the past fortinigbt has been favorable
for cutworms, yet no material damage
to the grain has Imn reported from this
source.
The wheat is heading in many lo
calities and the worms can do little
damage. Hay harvest is now in pro
gress in some localities and will seon be
oat of reach of the grasshoppers, which
is reported be becoming quite nameroua.
No fear is anticipated as to' the grain
crop on account of the hoppers and
little to the hay crop as that will soon
be out of their way. In the Gooseberry,
Eight Mile and'Blackhorse sections the
grain is reported to be looking excepti
onal y fine ; also in the lone and Lexing
ton vicinities. - ' '
The recent rains have been of great
benefit to the growing crops. In fact
farmers generally think there is suf
ficient moisture now to make a big
yield. The only thing , now to cause
apprehenson among the farmers is the
visit of the hot winds which come about ,
the middle of this month, but they are

was held at this place today. The
prices realized were the highest paid for
Eastern Oregon wools since 1892. One
and a quarter million pounds were sold,
The choice fine wools brought on an
average from 16 to 17 cents.
The highest price realized was 17
cents, paid for the Thomas Brogan clip.
The famous Baldwin Sheep & Land
Company's clipof 175,000 pounds brought
17 cents. A small clip of choice cross
bred Lincoln was bid in at 19 cents.
The advantages of the sealed bid
system of selling were demonstrated by
the promp disposal of all ' lots offered
and this is again shown to be the most
satisfactory method. The ' prices paid
are from 1 to 2 cents above tbe expec
tations ol the growers, and they are
correspondingly elated. The 6,000,000
