Tbe experience social and supper
given by the Christian Endeavor at the
Christian crurrh Saturday evening was
very latgely attended. A good program
of music and experience talk was ren
dered, which was followed by splendid
supper. Tbe receipts were upward of
$40.
John M. Brown of Lone Rot k, re
turned Friday evening from Portland,
where he bad been summoned as a juror
in the U. S coutt, but was excused.
Mr. Brown says range and crops look
fine in bis locality, and the stock are
doing exceptionally well. He sayt that
he recently so'd 03 bead- of hogs that
averaged 214 pounds at an average age
of seven months.
Sheriff Shut: returned Saturday from
Pendleton with J. W. Proctor, a veteriary
surgeon, who bad been detained by
' Pendleton officials upon advice from
Sheriff Shutt. rrocterls charged with
issuing and cashing a check on the First
Natnnel Ba k of this city for p. The
Check was cashed by Jack Lane, who'
was, the prosecuting witnets. Proctor
was arraigned before Justice J. V, Wil
liams in this ity Monday forenoon, plead

The lawn social given by the ladies of
the M., E. church, south Monday after
noon, on the parsonage lawn, was well
attended and a very pleasant affair. Ice
cream and cake were served, the total
receipts amounting to f'W.
The under graduates of the Heppner
public school will give an entertainment
at Roberts' opera bouse Friday evening,
May 20, and on Friday evening, May 27,
tbe opening exercises of the public
school will be held at tbe opera bouse.
William Gilliam of Walla Walla, la
in the city this week on business and
pleasure combined. He is engaged in
the resl estste business with his daoghter,
Mrs. Mollie Johnson, at Walla Walla,
where he anticipates a good business in
that line.
Mrs. Beatrice Barlow Dicrke will give
a musical at Roberta' opera bouse on
tbe evening of May 13, Mrs. Dierke
comes recommended as one of the
grestest plansts of the age, and Heppner
people who attend ber ' musical on tbe
dale mentioned are assured a splendid
entertainment.
D. E. Oilman, who returned Saturday
evening from a week's trip through the
Pendleton, Weston, Dayton and Waits
burg sections, reports that everywhere
the crops are looking very fine. He
commented especially upon tbe luxuriant
growth of grain in the locality between
Echo aud Pendleton.

A lady re iding on Butter creek one
night last week bung a bucket of cream
in tbe well, near the house so that it
might keep coot. During the night
fiog fell into tbe bucket of cream and in
his struggle to get out actually converted
the cream into butter. When the lady
visited the well the next morning she
found the frog sitting on a ball of butter
washing his feet in buttermilk.

II. E. Burchell, who was In town
Tuesday with h's ton Wm. from the
ranch near Lexington, tells the Timet
that be bas completed a water w rks (or
his ranch. Firrt he drilled a well 350
feet deep to procure tbe wster, then
built a 1)000 gallon reservoir of a suffiretit
elevation to pipe water into his dwelling
and to other ptrts of bis ranch where
needed foi watering stock, also to bis
garden for purpose of irrlgstion. The
water is pumped into the reservoir by
a large windmill. The entire cost of
his water syst m cost about 700, but Mr.
Burchell says he would not be without
it for twice that amount.
