The experts who examined the books of the late Treasurer Martin of Grant county, find that he was short in his accounts $3041.38. It is understood that Martin leaves property valued at about $3000, which will leave only a email bal ance to be made good by Martin's bondsmen. Democrats Meet. The democrat io county committee meeting, in the parlors of the TaUce hotel yeste day afternoon, vti well at tended and a very enthusiastic gather ing. lion. Henry Rlackman, chairman of the committee, presided and L. L j Matlock records I the minute. Representation bawd on the vote given Governor Chamberl in in 190a. which basia entitles the party to 5S delegates. The time set for holding the primaries was March 36, and the county , convention .-pril j. ( It is to be noped that the new irrigation scheme at Castle Rock, by Dalles capitalists, will be a success. If it is it means the pro viding of homes for a large number of fami.ies, increased land values and more taxable property for Morrow county at a much earlier date than to wait for reclama tion by the government. While any system that may be built by the government will be one of the best cla?8 it will necessarily take a long time to construct, or in the first place to get ready to construct it. A few private enterprises will only tend to hasten the govern ment along with the good work. A commer cial organization is the proper body to take the matter up and push i: along. If it is left for each individal to do his part as best he may there will be nothing done. An individual can't accomplish what an organized body can. The Lewis and Clark fair commission promises to see that any advertis ing matter p.epared by ny county shall be distributed to the best advantage at the St. Louis fair. A commercial organization could handle this matter very beneficially to our town and county. Not only this but there are numerous ways in which such a body could advance the interests of the community Acting for citizens at large, it can accomplish what would be im- jiosnible with individual efforts All important local questions can be advanced, an 1 it can ever be on the alert to look after the interests of the town. The improvements and progress in many of the the cities of the northwest have b-en due in a great measure to the activity of their commercial bodies. It ap plies as well to the smaller as to the larger cities. Morrow county has a very bright future, no county in Oregon has more promising prospects. Irrigation and the coal mining industry combined with her other resources are des tined to make Morrow one of the foremost counties of the state. On U Tatricks Day, free souvenirs at Tti Fair.
