The Arllngton Orchestra Fur
nished Good Music The
Supper at The Palace Hotel
an Eenjoyable Feature.
The banquet, musical entertainment
and dance given by Heppner Lodge No
358, B. P. O. E. at Roberta hall Monday
evening, anniversary of George Wash
ington's birthday, was one of the most
brilliant functions of the kind of the
season and was thoroughly enjoyed by
a large number of Elks and ladies.
The preparations were elaborate.
The hall was beautifully decorated with
bunting, flower and plant, in fact the
hall decorations were in harmony with
the gaily dressed ladies and gentlemen.
The musical program was no less
brilliant than the other features Of the
event. Following the sweet strains of
a splendid selection by the orchestra
was a solo, "Sail Ho!" by Otheo Craw
tor J wtiicli was well received, as was
also the selection of guitar and mandolin
music by J. K. Carr, Frank and Oscar
Borg. Mits Lillian Cochran acquitted
herself creditably in the solo "Derie,"
as did J. A. McKee in the solo "The
Mighty Deep." In the rendition of
"Genevieve" Mits Lutie Rasmus was
heartily encored, her splendid voice re
ceiving many complimentary expre-
sions.
At the conclusion of the musical pro
gram dancing was engaged io until 11 .30
when all repaired to the Falace hotel
Jining imll.
Here the same elaborate preparations
aa at the dance hall were in evidence,
and the service vas the best. The
menu contained the following : Eastern
raw oysters, celery, bouillion, steamed
clams, petits bouchers anx salpicon,
deviled crabs in shells, roast chicken,
ham, tongue, mayonaise of shrimps,
vanilla ice cream, assorted cakes,
oranges, bananas and coffee.
The Elks are royal entertainers and
all functions given by them the prepar
ation is on a broad scale, nothing
being left undone that will please the
eve and gladden the heart. This event
w as no exception to the rule.
the hooks was such that their condition
could not be ascertained. From the
last message, an unsigned letter to a
friend, which he left on his desk, this
fact led to the suicide. The letter con
tinues: "Some warrants I cannot ac
count for, and always thought I could
never survive such a condition. I always
tried to lead an honerable life and have
property enough to square all my obliga
tions. If anyone were depending on me,
I would fight the battle bravely, but I am
no use to anyone and will no longer be
a burden. I am not afraid of death and
will now unravel the mystery not re
vealed above."
Martin was a single man 36 years of
age, and was held in high regard. He
was lerving his third term as Treasurer,
having been nominated by the Republi
cans and endorsed by the Democrats.
He came here six years ago from what
is now Wheeler county. His habits
were quiet and he leaves considerable
propertr, which will probably suffice to
pay any shortage that may exist. Only
a thorough investigation will reveal the
amount of this shortage.
There is a' great excitment and uni
versal regret at Martin's suicide.

BAND'S RAPID PROGRESS
Mr. Lonergan Gives His Views

A Price of 41-2 Cents for May.
The basket social given by the Hepp
ner, Jr., band in Roberts' hall Friday
evening was a success. There was a
large attendance and bidding from the
beginning was lively.
The literary, which consists of a select
reading by Miss Wattenburger, solos by
J. A. McKee and Otheo Crawford, an
exhibition of club swinging and music
by the orchestra was very good and
duly appreciated.
Mayor Gilliam and Ilerbet Bartholo
mew were a success as auctioneers, the
baskets telling for an average of about
two dollars. The lowest sale was for (1
and the highest $7, the total salea net
ting about (70.
The Times is t laased to note the en
couragement thus given the young
band. The boys are laboring hard to
build op a good band and they are suc
ceeding admirably. They have realized
from this entertainment sufficient funds,
when added to that obtained from other
sources, to purchase new instruments,
and when these arrive their progress
will be more rapid.
The band boys desire to express their
thanks to the people of Heppner for
their liberal patronage.
